Full Disclosure Game 1 is done.
I have emailed a copy of the press to all players involved in the game that emailed me their press. If anyone else on this site is interested in a copy of the 370 page pdf file, you can email me at [email protected] and I will send it out. I will wait 2 weeks or so to send the copies out since the players that played get first-dibs on viewing the material.

The BASIC American Question
Are you better off today than when Obama took office ? Are you a college grad moving BACK HOME instead of into your first place because you haven't a job?

Remember when McCain told Obama in the debates in 2008 that is was dangerous and naive to order a strike in Pakistan if the Pakistanis didn't want to do it?

Right, but "anybody would have done it". Uh huh.

"QUESTION: Should the United States respect Pakistani sovereignty and not pursue al Qaeda terrorists who maintain bases there, or should we ignore their borders and pursue our enemies like we did in Cambodia during the Vietnam War?"

"OBAMA: What I've said is we're going to encourage democracy in Pakistan, expand our nonmilitary aid to Pakistan so that they have more of a stake in working with us, but insisting that they go after these militants.

And if we have Osama bin Laden in our sights and the Pakistani government is unable or unwilling to take them out, then I think that we have to act and we will take them out. We will kill bin Laden; we will crush Al Qaida. That has to be our biggest national security priority."

To which McCain replies:

MCCAIN: Well, Katie (ph), thank you.

You know, my hero is a guy named Teddy Roosevelt. Teddy Roosevelt used to say walk softly -- talk softly, but carry a big stick. Senator Obama likes to talk loudly.

In fact, he said he wants to announce that he's going to attack Pakistan. Remarkable.

You know, if you are a country and you're trying to gain the support of another country, then you want to do everything you can that they would act in a cooperative fashion.

When you announce that you're going to launch an attack into another country, it's pretty obvious that you have the effect that it had in Pakistan: It turns public opinion against us.

Now, let me just go back with you very briefly. We drove the Russians out with -- the Afghan freedom fighters drove the Russians out of Afghanistan, and then we made a most serious mistake. We washed our hands of Afghanistan. The Taliban came back in, Al Qaida, we then had the situation that required us to conduct the Afghan war.

Now, our relations with Pakistan are critical, because the border areas are being used as safe havens by the Taliban and Al Qaida and other extremist organizations, and we have to get their support.

Now, General Petraeus had a strategy, the same strategy -- very, very different, because of the conditions and the situation -- but the same fundamental strategy that succeeded in Iraq. And that is to get the support of the people.

We need to help the Pakistani government go into Waziristan, where I visited, a very rough country, and -- and get the support of the people, and get them to work with us and turn against the cruel Taliban and others.

And by working and coordinating our efforts together, not threatening to attack them, but working with them, and where necessary use force, but talk softly, but carry a big stick.

So it's not a priority but "anybody would have done it"? Bull. It was a risky move, risked alienating Pakistan permanently and they didn't want to do that. They wanted to appease Musharraf and stay friendly with Pakistan, and called Obama "green" for advocating such a policy.
I can't be the only one whose major life changes since the election of President Obama were nonpolitical and thus, comparatively speaking, not significantly impacted either way by the new President.

You clearly haven't tried to buy a home since Obama, have you, Eden? How is buying a home "political"? Yet it is more difficult today to get a loan even with moderately decent credit and a 10% downpayment than it was previously. I sold my condo no problem and rented a house in Kentucky for 6 years. Now, I want to buy one back here in Ohio with a full 10% down and a decent credit rating and have to fight harder than I did for the condo back in 2002 under Bush when my credit rating was a biut lower and I only had 5% down.

@Putin, I understood Draugnar's claim as whichever president was in power, not any individual hypothetically. The latter is easy to disprove: just claim /you/ wouldn't since you're any individual. If you wish to interpret Draugnar's claim very openly, the "any individual" reading is there, not just presidents and hopefuls. I thought it made more sense to understand his claim as "any president" and not "any individual."

And here I was thinking I was being pedantic talking to Draug....

" it can be cheaper to produce something somewhere else and because you force yourself to produce it "here" you end up being inefficient"

I have a hard time understanding how domestically producing anything would be more 'inefficient' than setting up complicated, expensive, long-distance logistical networks of distribution. Long distance trade costs a great deal more in terms of fuel and resource costs to produce any thing. Now, you might say that the suppressed, starvation wages paid to workers in the distant location make up for this increased transportation and resource expense. But do starving, suppressed workers make quality products? I think it's dubious to think that they do. For example, imported steel from cheap labor countries is quite shoddy compared to steel from industrialized countries that pay a fair wage. So what efficiency gains are we making, again, by spending huge amounts of money on shipping steel in heavy containers across the Pacific, as opposed to transporting it within our country via rail, etc?

@dubm - "My parents bought a house for the first time under the Obama administration, something that would have been impossible for them during the Bush years"

I somehow doubt the veracity of that statement. The ability to purchase a home has gotten more difficult requiring the full 20% down and much better credit to get a loan. Then *only* ease that has been added under Oblamer is that houses are fucking cheap because of the crash.

My grandmother bought a home during the Eisenhower administration and died under the Bush administration. Coincidence?
But if you assume the purchaser has the credit rating and 20 percent down, then the interest rates are at historic lows.

To back up Putin's statement about getting what you pay for (so to speak): I've had two experiences with companies that used outsourcing to other countries, both times Mexico. First, my wife worked for a company that moved a main manufacturing facility to Mexico, and she had to constantly be flown down there to oversee their HR team. In fact, a lot of the company's leadership had to go down there frequently because while countries such as Mexico have plenty of cheap labor, the job market is very tight for management. Their flaw rate was much higher than the former US plants, also. Part of this is because so many companies have factories just over the border that the workers have absolutely no loyalty to any particular one. They will work for one for a while, then shift to another, mostly based on what kind of incentives each gives. It's all the same to them if they're making cars or textiles. This lack of loyalty makes them never really get good at any one job, which makes a huge difference. And one could question if the factory actually saved any money whatsoever when you factored in the trips everyone had to take to it to make sure it ran decently plus the high flaw rate.

I also worked in accounting for another company which opened a factory in Mexico. Not only did that location lose immense amounts of money because the company thought they could run it exactly like a US factory except for paying people less, it also ended up bankrupting the company because the high flaw rate combined with poor QA testing led to some massive injury (and at least one death) lawsuits by consumers.

People see that labor costs are lower elsewhere, and they never stop to think about why they are lower. You get what you pay for in labor. You can talk junk about the popular viewpoint that union factory workers in the US are lazy and overpaid...until you get horribly slain by a mistake made by the Mexican worker who is so underpaid that he literally does not give a fuck...and neither did anyone else in that factory so it wasn't caught.

"*Blank* Fundamentalism," "The Media," and Other Double Standards
When it's MSNBC/CNN/the BBC/ABC, etc, it's "The Media," always "out to get" the Right and praise the Left--but then, when it's FOX, it's "Fair and Balanced."
When it's "Atheist Fundamentalism" (someone who holds this view, please, tell me what you mean by it) it's to be stopped--but make them Christian Fundamentalists, and suddenly, apologists crop up everywhere...why the double standard?
