@bo

my conspiracy is, -first off- the NSA we KNOW were discussing with Clinton and Clinton associates on communications. that's on official court records, there had been consultations. (now conspiracy) I think they knew she had a specific private server, and they thought - hey, we can use this. so they were spying on her, just to keep a little eye on the Dems. THEN, the weiner get exposed (+1 for pun of the year?) and the FBI casually requests all emails.

Clinton - who has fucked up - deletes some emails - Which the public still has ZERO knowledge on (except for brainbomb, who has psychic powers and knows they were ALLLLLLLLLL wedding stuff.) - but the NSA DOES know.

the NSA nudges the FBI and says, "oi me laddies" (the NSA are pirates btw) "that thar White whale (+1 for best fat shaming of year?) is wurkin with the east india establishment company. her blubbery ass tis worth a thousand gallions in agreeing with us. But bewarned, thurs a beasty coming, with giant tumorous skin, orange as the setting sun AND A TEMPERAMENT AS FOUL AS DONALD TR- *what? oh, it IS Trump? well i dunno a better metaphor. whatever, this bit is stupid

anyways, they know that nothing bad has happened, and so they tell the FBI- she fucked up, but now she'll owe us one PLUS nothing bad got leaked. we know, b/c we were spying on her. she'll be easier to work with, just don't indict her and our intelligence budgets are goin' up.

So that's the situation we're in now

also, I can back this up by the fact that the base-level computer-readouts from fort Meade, tell us that substantial internal data compilations in no way increased when the scandal broke out: AKA, the NSA gave very few actual shits about it. which is ACTUALLY surprising, and also the basis for my conspiracy. Go on Tor, and they have a Lot of useful raw data - much of which is in fact legal simply b/c it's 3rd party material. IE, not actual streamed data form a hack

...though in hindsight, it occurs to me that the NSA might not be pirates.

just, like, Irish or something.

@Ogion ... methane.

I would also say that habitat destruction is above crude oil as far as immediate concern goes, though obviously oil spills are destructive. Logging is the primary culprit. Not as big of a deal here as it is in other parts of the world, though we frequently sell off our national lands for oil and logging.

Last one I would put ahead of oil is water, but that isn't all that apparent to the West yet. And obviously, each of these issues is a contribution to or an effect of climate change.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
07 Nov 16 UTC
If you're thinking particularly within the US, you could justify crude oil being so high up the list, but if you're only thinking of the US, you're doing environmentalism wrong.

I dont think the Republican party cares about rising sea levels, global warming, water contamination, pil spills, strip mining, fracking, deforestation at all
brainbomb (290 D)

So I cant imagine theyd care about species extinction either. But that being said Hillary is not going to be an environmentally friendly option either
JamesYanik (548 D)

@bo

I'm not sure the Dems care. After COP21 literally did nothing, and Obama called it a HUGE step forward: i stopped looking for answers from that party.

Clinton doesn't seem any more concerned. Bernie and Stein were the only 2 to REALLY address it.

Brainbomb, charismatic megafauna is one of the biggest issues the environment faces. You should care as much for the snail darter as the whales and polar bears.

James, the reason that that was a big step is because it was a move past the inept Kyoto Protocol and toward an up-to-date, scientific platform for the world to strive to achieve. None of these arrangements will constitute actual progress until there is an enforcement mechanism for them.

As for Democrats caring, I find the issues to be more regional than partisan (though of course regions are often partisan). You won't find politicians from Alaska, despite them being Republicans, that deny it. They still love oil, because that is their entire economy outside of tourism, but they know what is coming. Same goes for the Rockies states. Southern politicians and Midwestern politicians tend to more readily deny it because they don't see it. Some East Coast politicians do too, but that's because they're dumb.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

This election cycle has been a massive letdown as far as the environment goes. Neither candidate addresses climate change. The one time Hillary did, the red sweater of Ken Bone got more attention than his reasonable and important question about energy policy. Donald Trump is a joke on the matter. At least Hillary is mainstream and accepting of reality even if she can be bought and leveraged.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

Also, James, if you think everyone with ADHD is medicated and nobody with ADD needs to be medicated, you're severely misguided.
JamesYanik (548 D)

@bo

i have ZERO idea, beyond myself and like 2 people i know who have it. the numbers i don't know.

on a separate note: you're right about COP21, ESPECIALLY about it no being actual progress. Separately, my main concerns ecologically are more along pollution than global warming - a term i don't like, as it is a vast over simplification of our earth's climate's development
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
07 Nov 16 UTC
(+1)
Most people need it simplified. If I told you about the effects of a widening polar amplification and the lowered contrast between tropical environments and the polar environments, causing an increased range for disease vectors and the loss of vital natural resource stocks like the ice caps, you might get it, but not everyone does. Global warming may be a misnomer, but it gets the point across - until it begins snowing, that is; then, it's just a hoax perpetrated by the Chinese.

The Paris Agreement may end up being real progress if nations stick to it. If Trump comes in and basically says fuck it, it's not important, then the whole thing will be invalidated right off the bat and we're just that much further away.
"The FBI investigative team has been working around the clock to process and review a large volume of emails from a device obtained in connection with an unrelated criminal investigation," Comey said in the letter. "During that process we reviewed all of the communications that were to or from Hillary Clinton while she was secretary of State," Comey wrote. "Based on our review, we have not changed our conclusions that we expressed in July with respect to Secretary Clinton."

"PE, put aside the Trump love for a minute and tell me, as an intelligent and sometimes rational human being, what the most plausible explanation is here."

I don't know. What do you think?

It certainly hurt Clinton's polling numbers and gave Trump an opening, but Comey doesn't strike me as somebody who'd want to be helping Trump and hurting Clinton. That's why that explanation isn't clear to me.

"PE, no it doesn't strike anyone as weird, because there weren't 650,000 responsive emails. Gods, where do people come up with this nonsense. and if you've done e-discovery it still isn't odd. Eliminate the wrong date ranges, the wrong recipients by filter, screen against the ones you've already got copies of (since they already reviewed the other server) and there's not likely to be more than a handful that need real review."

http://www.wsj.com/articles/laptop-may-include-thousands-of-emails-linked-to-hillary-clintons-private-server-1477854957

WSJ link citing that number, it's the number of emails found on the laptop that sparked the brief reopening of the investigation.

And sure, obviously some of them could be duplicates. Even if you assume all of the 33000 emails from the previous investigation were duplicated, that still leaves 617000 emails to go through. While I'm sure they would be able to move at a quicker rate per email on the second investigation (owing to the fact that not all of the emails on the laptop were from the Clinton server), that's still a striking change in rate: ~18x as many emails in ~1/45th the time. The rate of total emails : relevant emails would have to be 810 : 1 or greater for that review time to be plausible.

I guess ultimately I don't know whether or not that rate is actually plausible. Maybe it is. Naturally without actually seeing the emails, there's no way to know.
Jamiet99uk (808 D)

@ Without actually seeing the emails...

PE, if the FBI let you see 650,000 emails, what would you do with them? How would you prioritise? What would you be searching for? Lol.

"Global warming" is an accurate term, What is not accurate is the tendency to understand this as 'local warming everywhere'. The globe is heating as whole even if some places, like Europe, are predicted to cool down (in the case of Europe, it's because cold waters from Greenland melted ice are predicted to get in the way of the Gulf stream)

To Americans
Learn from this mistake. When given a chance to elect someone like Bernie again, do it. Don't go for the person that's a part of the establishment. It could've been Bernie getting ready for his victory speech now. You threw that chance away when you LET the establishment decide Bernie wouldn't win. Learn from this mistake so that you don't make it again. Better luck next time.

Polarization Self-Assessment Thread
Politics has changed A LOT in the past ten years ago. In this thread, I'd like to encourage you all to think about your past political views and how greatly you've polarized over time. What issues do you care about today vs then? Why? Any original ideas or do you rely on the media for cues? Interested to hear some real self-assessment here! :)

Viable Strategies for Austria
Whenever I play Austria I feel like I'm strategically forced to attack Turkey. I think that if Turkey isn't killed in the early game, he is basically forced based to go through Austria if he wants to reach the rest of the world. I know that this can't be the case, but I don't see the other strategies.
I would love to learn of some other options for Austria so I don't do the same thing every time I get it.
