Interstellar
I really liked this movie. Of course, the expository sections, wherein astronauts were reminded that light can't escape black holes, were goofy. But I thought it managed to treat ideas like the brevity of human life very effectively, and provocatively. I'm going to be thinking about the movie for a long time. What did you guys think of it?

Interest in Tournaments (no promises)
There hasn't been many non-gunboat (or player-sponsored) tournaments lately. This thread is to gauge the interest in the site of bringing back any of the following tournaments: The World Cup, The Masters, The Leagues. The GFDT is abge's thing, so I won't ask on that.

Protestor Facing 9 Counts of Assaulting Police for Fake Blood
http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/nyc-crime/occupy-wall-street-protester-busted-nypd-boss-paint-job-article-1.2022996

What the article for whatever reason fails to mention is that he is apparently facing 225 years... for... fake blood on a guy in a suit... yeah, okay... that makes sense.

Oh look, the New York justice system is being ridiculously heavy-handed when it comes to dealing with protests. Again.

Seriously, how much of this shit has to happen before people can accept that the justice system is completely fucked, and that the police are complicit in this.

no there are simply a few people who get around the law, not ALL police are complicit, and finally go screw yourself

Previous arrests means nothing. You might have a case with previous convictions, but previous arrests just means he cares about his community, lives in NY, and isn't white.

"but previous arrests just means he cares about his community, lives in NY, and isn't white."

um... no, that .... just no

There will always be corruption but quite frankly the justice system doesnt seem too fucked up to me, and @mendax, stop bitching about it and start coming up with a way to fix it otherwise there is no reason for you to post anymore. literally no fucking reason

@James
Do you live in Ferguson? Or NYC? Chicago? I agree that judicial segment of of our justice system is pretty much as good as it gets but the executive segment, the police namely, needs some MAJOR changes. Being African-American in Chicago, I know this problem first hand. You want ways to fix it? Abolish police's right to privacy while they are on duty. I'm talking body cameras, voice recordings, etc.

There are definitely things that need to be improved on (body cameras are definitely a good idea, and there's no strong argument against them) but doing things like throwing paint at police isn't a good way to make your opinions heard.

I was making my stance on the issue more clear. I believe this protestor is in the wrong but police in Ferguson, Chicago, etc are notorious for being overly abusive. Iwas agreeing eith your statement while combating JY's

Police in New York City and Chicago, along with a few other big cities, set the precedent. Other departments follow their lead. Fix them and slowly we will get better.

The NYPD needs to get rid of their stop-and-frisk policy so that they can try to get their image under control, first of all. After that, they need to crack down on instances of police brutality regardless of whether or not they are pursued in court, and they need to simply get back to doing their jobs as officers in the largest police department in the country. They also need to lighten their stance on low amounts of recreational drugs - instead, focus on cracking down on dealers and on shipments.

Of course, I don't have the inside scoop on the NYPD, so there are certainly issues I missed.

Chicago needs to stop shooting black kids and start offering reparations for the housing segregation and redlining which created some of the worst neighborhoods on the planet.
Invictus (240 D)

"Chicago needs to stop shooting black kids and start offering reparations for the housing segregation and redlining which created some of the worst neighborhoods on the planet."

Oh please. There's plenty of abuse and corruption in the Chicago police department, but it's not as if they just go out looking to shoot people for sport. The people they shoot tend to be either: (1) people shooting at them, or (2) people they think might shoot at them. When it comes to (2), sometimes police are wrong. When they are, they should be punished severely. But to simply say "stop shooting black kids" oversimplifies the problem. As you say, these are horrible neighborhoods. Police killings happen more often in the bad parts of the city rather than, say, the Gold Coast because the bad parts are where the violent crime takes place. The way to solve the problem with police is to solve the underlying problem of pervasive organized crime in these areas of the city. Punish bad cops along the way, but don't have that be the goal in and of itself.

As for reparations, even if that were a good policy to pursue it's not the job of the police department to do it.

Bo ,spoken like the moron you are . Funny about all the opinions from people who know so little about the city.
Yoyoyozo (65 D)

@ssorenn @Invictus
I agree that police here in Chicago don't just shoot people for no reason, but that's not the abuse I'm talking about. I'll give you an example: I was walking to the bus stop that I take take home from The museum in Hyde Park (one of the more peaceful diverse neighbourhoods in town.) A cop asks me a few questions, I answer them. He asks to check my bag and I politely exercise my 4th amendment rights. He thinks I'm trying to get smart with him and begins verbally attacking me, making very racist comments. I try to calm him down and pulls his gun on me, yelling at me to get down. It was the most embarrassing moment of my life because hyde park is a very busy place and these people are looking at me like I'm a criminal or something. He takes my bag and violently starts throwing things out, breaking my phone and my laptop. I didn't get arrested or anything but things like this needs to stop. If you have any questions about me or my experiences, please ask. My solution is police body cams
Invictus (240 D)
30 Nov 14 UTC
I fully support body cams. What happened to you was an outrage and I hope you made a complaint.
Yoyoyozo (65 D)
30 Nov 14 UTC
I did. They Police sergeant for the district wrote a letter of apology and the officer was given desk duty (which pays more btw) for some period of time. Justice was served.
ssorenn (0 DX)
30 Nov 14 UTC
That should never happen and agree it's an outrage. We're you getting on bus or El. There is a new ordinance in Chicago that police are allowed to search your bags if you're geting on public transit. If you elect to not allow them to search they are supposed to not allow you on. There is no reason for them to break anything you own. That's brutality.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
30 Nov 14 UTC
Did you at least get your phone and laptop replaced?

Don't know the 4th Amendment, but if you were correctly exercising your rights and he violated those rights, can't you sue for money or something? I don't know how that goes in the USA but I think you at least get compensation for your trouble in NL, which is something at least..
Yoyoyozo (65 D)
30 Nov 14 UTC
I was compensated for my laptop which was rendered useless. My phone's screen was shattered, a lot of the apps didn't work, and it crashed a lot but it was still able to make phone calls so that was denied. I was only 17 at the time (this was over the summer) so the station just believed whatever bullshit excuse the officer gave. I told my mom but in the long haul, nothing happened.

I was walking to the bus stop, had not reached it
Invictus (240 D)
30 Nov 14 UTC
I suppose you could have fought over it, but it'd be pretty hard to get them to pay for a new phone. People walk around with shattered cell phone screens all the time, not so with smashed laptops. I believe you, obviously, but it would be hard to prove the screen wasn't broken before.

But, as a thought experiment only, let's say you made this whole thing up. If the police officer had a chest camera, then there would be evidence that he did nothing wrong. This is why it makes no sense for police to oppose having cameras. It makes false accusation impossible, protecting officers just as much as citizens.

Again, I believe this happened to you. I'm just making the point that chest cams are an unambiguously good thing for all parties involved.

Seeking Cliche's : Powered Armor
Fellow Webdipstanians...perhaps you saw my earlier teaser thread..."Armor" Perhaps not. Anyway, instead of November write a novel in a month, I"m going to do December (10 days off around Christmas...best month for this plan). My novel -- a "Powered Armor" sci-fi schtick. Humorous take on the powered warrior fighting a pointless war.

I used to be an active member, but haven't played in over a year. My brother is visiting for thanksgiving and wants to play. It would be great if we could get some players to join us. He played the board game many many years ago, so he's familiar with the game but is new to online play.

2014 Webdiplomacy Tournament Round 2
Looking for feedback. Ultimately there are two options: starting in a few weeks with the next round's games being setup Saturday, December 6, or waiting until after the holidays. I'm not sure how many are traveling, and I'd hate to see a mass-produced for the end of December, but I would also hate to delay the next round as this one is coming to a close. Thoughts?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMOVFvcNfvE I haven't seen these movies in years--I stopped being a fan about the time I joined this site...and gave myself this name, lol--but THAT looks pretty cool. A couple odd things in there, but hey...X-Wings and Tie Fighters again, instead of Whateverplanes from the prequels. Now J.J. Abrams just needs the Millennium Falcon to team up with the USS Enterprise! ;) Thoughts, sci-fi people, on the new Star Wars trailer?

Apple Question
Some of you are techy people, might you be able to help me out?

Apparently my Apple ID is locked because I don't know the answers to my security questions (well, I think I do, but they are apparently wrong) and my rescue email is disabled since I graduated from my high school. Since then, I get notification after notification informing me that I can't access the cloud and now my texts aren't sending. Is this all because of my ID security questions or is something else going on?
