I actually don't give one shit what Blacks, or Women, or Gays, or Handicapped people think.
I care about what the individuals I know think. I have never met a woman who was offended when I referred to her as a girl, as in "she's the girl standing over there." If however, there was a woman who didn't like it, I certainly wouldn't, because *she* as an individual asked me not to.
The reason I call most women girls is because it's monosyllabic and it fits well together with guys, which is how I refer to most men.
Now, if I'm in a formal setting, I'll refer to people as man or woman, but I do it for both sexes, so I don't see a double standard there.
