The only people who make such a big deal about calling a "woman" a "girl" are people who secretly believe females to be inferior and, wanting to hide it from everyone, overcompensates by calling attention to such details.

For people that *actually* respect women, they really don't put any thought into if they call them a girl or a lady, or a woman, and any woman with self-esteem doesn't notice either.

I think a woman has to be old and intelligent enough to reject communism as a philosophy, but not so old as to vividly remembering the experience in Eastern-Europe.

I hadn't noticed the girl reference, but I have to agree with Putin to a point. The President of our company has made it a point to promote that the 60s are over and we don't say "I'll have my girl call your girl and we'll do lunch" anymore because calling your administrative assistant girl is even more demeaning than calling her (assuming your AA is female) your secretary.

I care about what the individuals I know think. I have never met a woman who was offended when I referred to her as a girl, as in "she's the girl standing over there." If however, there was a woman who didn't like it, I certainly wouldn't, because *she* as an individual asked me not to.

The reason I call most women girls is because it's monosyllabic and it fits well together with guys, which is how I refer to most men.

Now, if I'm in a formal setting, I'll refer to people as man or woman, but I do it for both sexes, so I don't see a double standard there.

Maybe I just hang around with stronger women than you do? My female friends and colleagues have never hesitated to call me out when they think I'm doing something wrong. And, because I respect them, I usually listen to what they have to say. When your actions towards a person are respectful, they really don't care if you address them in a way that may, under some circumstances, to some people, be offensive.

The real problem is that people think PC titles will somehow fix the way bigots interact with people. A misogynist is still going to treat his secretary (OH SHIT I MEAN ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT) shitty, even if he isn't allowed to call her "girl".

It's not "ladies night out." It's "girls night out." We even say "boys night out" or "guys night out" when the men are hanging together. Are the black males offended if I and my buddies have a "boys night out?" Hell, there's even a show on tBS called "One of the Boys" and two new comdies called "The New Girl" and "Two Broke Girls".

@strat - Now that depends. If they work for middle management (i.e. a departmental assistant), then they aren't working for executives so they are administrative assistants and the department manager manges them the same as any other departmental employee. It has to be a one on one with upper management tfor them to be executive assistants. And in that case, they may as well be the executive as those tools are usual lost without their assistants.
