Due to finals, vacations, busy schedules, it appears the list for mods to look into has grown quite large. I'm busy at work, but will try to power through some of them. Please be patient with us in the mean time while we try to get through the backlog, k?

Person (Germany) missed their first turn. I hit draw/cancel. I'd prefer cancel but half the people wanted draws. All but England voted, he knew he had the advantage and didn't care. Another person left. (France) England definitely won't vote. Now that Turkey is tie for 1st place, he removed his vote as well.

Beginner Q about pause
IWe have one player who hasn't entered moves and the game is about to advance. Can I hit Pause to allow him extra time or is it some kind of voting thing where you need a majority of the remaining players? I'm not trying to do this on the sly or anything, the player is actually someone I am fighting but so far none of us have missed any turns and I hate to see the game decided by something as lame as him getting back later than expected from the long weekend.

What is an honest resignation rate?
I have 2, which is 5% of my 40 finished games.

I wouldn't get too excited about percentages. Someone who has recently started and has one internet failure may easily have a resigned percentage well into double figure without doing anything wrong.

It is also rather easy for a new player to this site to get caught out by joining, say, a 12 hour per phase game without understanding what they can be like, or a live game with no idea about how long they can last (lets be honest, a ten minute / phase live game when some bastard has NMR'd, or point blank refuses to ready in the retreat and build phases, can test the patience of a saint). This is to be frowned upon, but is essentially forgivable.

If, however, you've clocked up a fair few games and have a resigned rate close or exceeding double figures, you will be rightly cast in a very bad light. To get any sort of respect you should only play a game when you're pretty damned sure you'll be able to finish it. If you have a particularly unreliable internet connection then playing live games is really not something to even consider.

In short, diplonerd, I think you are fine. However, tough out any games you think may have cheating going on and instead send an email to [email protected] as it is better to take the loss than the resign and the mods can compensate the victims with points if they find there was cheating going on.
I have 2 and I feel like a dick. I got those 2 when I left the site for a year... even worse they were league games! :(

To the haters, fuck you. ^_^ My personal life trumps the game. I continue to feel bad out of respect for the community.
Draugnar (0 DX)

But Sayjo, you feel bad about those resigns. Right? And you would never join a live game if you didn't think you had the time to see it through. Right?
MichiganMan (5121 D)

@Draugnar

No respect for the community?!? Pot, meet kettle. I have over 3x the game finished that you do! Who anointed you protector of the site? I said my intention is to finish but at times I cannot. I don't think your attitude towards me (even with my mature and rational explanation) is a very "community building" one. To tell others NOT to play in a game with is asinine and shows what a little turd you are! A great many of my resigns were a while ago when I was exceedingly busy and since then I've made every effort to NOT join games until I am nearly 100% sure I'll have to time to finish. Again, get over yourself, just because YOU have no life and YOU can dedicate all your free time to this site and are the self-appointed NMR NAZI doesn't mean that you have to ruin my experience here. I've played and loved this game since before you could walk and talk most likely. I love the live 5 min format here, but between the cheats (not you) and the prick (most definitely YOU) it's getting less and less hospitable. Thanks!

MichiganMan:
"I've made every effort to NOT join games until I am nearly 100% sure I'll have to time to finish."
Then how the hell did you manage to fuck up 11% of your games?
Is your life that full of unexpected excitements?
If you want to play games here you must be ready to make small sacrifices.
That means even delaying going out with a hot girl if you need to enter orders for a turn that ends.
Busy life is an excuse to lower the number of games you are in, not to go CD.
@Draugnar - "But Sayjo, you feel bad about those resigns. Right? And you would never join a live game if you didn't think you had the time to see it through. Right?"

wtf are you talking about? >.<
Draugnar (0 DX)
30 May 11 UTC
@MMM - considering I was born in the mid 60s, you claim you've been playing since before I could walk or talk is more than likely bogus. In fact, i'd bet I'm older than you.

And you have so many games because you quit one in ten of them. I don't play live games and I put my all into each and every game I play here. I'm a top 100 GR player. Where do you rank?

I actually went and looked at my resigned games in light of this thread, and they both happened because I had NMR'd with 1 SC left and the other players all drew both times as soon as it happened. It was internet issues with both, which were frustrating but don't happen to me anymore since I got a new router

I don't understand why the need for insults. I really don't.
And the competition to know who's oldest? Feels to me like it's not the number of years that counts, but what you've learned from them. One thing I've learned in my short life is that, if someone doesn't share your point of view and it's obvious reason and arguments won't bring him or her to your side, the only thing to do is accept that there's a disagreement and move on (unless your life is at stakes, in which case kill the motherfucker before he kills you!!!).
I'm sure both of you, Draugnar and MichiganMan, are tough competitors and worthy opponents. As I almost never play live games I feel free to say as much: I'll be happy to see either of you on the board!
Save the warring for the game. Spread the love and understanding elsewhere!

MM: You're going to have to develop a thicker ("adult", as you put it) skin and look past those who don't tend to have civil conversations over the merits of an issue.

If your question was HOW MANY CAN I RESIGN BEFORE THE BETTER PLAYERS IN THE COMMUNITY STARTS HESITATING TO PLAY GAMES WITH ME?..... then from my viewpoint, 2% is bumping up against the max. I know when I send out invites to better players for passworded games, if I see a player at 5%, I would't invite them. 2%...probably would. If you are willing to play with beginners, you can get into non-passworded any time...but you have to be aware that players in those games have the same level of commitment to their fellow players as you do, if you are truly at 11% resigns.

What it comes down to is the points made above:
- DON'T join live games (they take FOUR HOURS) unless you've cleared it with your family first, because you can't realistically take a break from them.

Look at it this way - it's a sign of respect for your fellow players, who have cleared four hours of THEIR time to give YOU a competitive game. You wouldn't sign up for a real life bowling tournament with your team....and then miss turns or walk out in the middle. It's nothing more than adult respect for your fellow players.

Since I can't do that....I don't play live games unless I'm home alone for the night.
Which is ok, because 24 hour turn games are pretty good.

Just show respect.

@Draugnar

Look, lets call a truce ok? I am sorry that I've insulted you so for having a life outside of web diplomacy. When I play, I give it my all. All I am guilty of is over estimating my time and enjoying the game too much and ALWAYS wanting to play. I assure you I mean no disrespect to you, my fellow players, nor the community as a whole -- I simply bit off more than I could chew out of enthusiasm for live game (which until I found this site I'd not played in decades).

Your point is well taken, and I vow to only play when I am 100% certain of being able to finish. But, in the spirit of diplomacy, I'd hope the you could meet me half way and stop making me out to be the devil incarnate for my resign %. My intent has never been malicious I assure you -- can you say the same?
Draugnar has the least respect for fellow community members out of all the players I have encountered.

The way you abuse people in teh forum and walk around like you own the world is far more disrespectful than what MichiganMan does.

So why not learn to behave like a human being and stop being the biggest jackass on the internet?
Hey, the internet needs trolls! Without trolls where would the world get its endless supply of free validation? haha
MichiganMan (5121 D)
30 May 11 UTC
So I don't get invited to your games -- I'll not lose any sleep I promise you. Personally, I think it's your loss as I am a good player with years of experience. But hey, if I don't meet your criteria, res ipsa loquitor! As I said above, I've never resigned out of maliciousness and I've made every effort of late to only join when I am sure I have time. I agree with Lando, however, there are some in here that are just down right mean to others and are basically "Internet bullies".

Glad you've decided to only join when you are sure that you have time. You asked what an "acceptable" resignation rate was, and how it would be viewed. I responded, just my opinion, which I think many higher rated players would share.

I wish you the best - the internet is a great thing, had assumed my 1970's diplomacy days were gone forever!
MichiganMan (5121 D)
30 May 11 UTC
I apologize for lowering myself to insults. I just don't understand the hostility. I tried to explain obviously poor 11% resign rate and got my head bit off, my name posted on Draugnar's "black list" and told to pound sand up my ass. All because I love live diplomacy so much that at times I start a game when perhaps I shouldn't or something unexpected arises. Amazing!
Octavious (2701 D)
30 May 11 UTC
@ MichiganMan

The trouble with an 11% resign rate is that if everyone adopts a similar position then it will be damned rare to find yourself in a game without someone resigning at a crucial time (which is even more annoying than someone just not turning up). It is surely then no great surprise that a few people are directing some of their pent up miffedness in your direction.

Methinks a slightly more strict approach about when you feel you are able to play a game is called for. As things stand I would think twice about joining a live game with you in it despite the fact that you're obviously a fine player of the game.
MichiganMan (5121 D)
30 May 11 UTC
I understand and appreciate your civil remarks. All I can do from here on out is be more conscientious -- as my finished games continue to rise in number, as long as my resigns cease, I'll be within the acceptable range in time.

"Feels to me like it's not the number of years that counts, but what you've learned from them."

+1

"I'll be within the acceptable range in time"

I don't know about other people, but my "acceptable range" is ~2%. In order to get your resigns down to that number, you'd need another 1693 games with no resigns. But best of luck in doing that.

And to follow up on Oct's point, if you have 7 people in a game, and each resigns 10% of the time, there is only a 48% chance of having a resign free game. Which is exactly why many people avoid people with high resign rates.

Re: hellalt: We've had this conversation many times, and I've apologized many times. You and I both know that it was due to a miscommunication, and you really ought to drop it.

I am starting to develop a new attitude to this problem. I have a reasonable record and am starting to think that, over time, CDs even themselves out among the conscientious remaining players. I used to draw/cancel more or less all the time, but not everyone does. Maybe we should start viewing them as a part of the game? He says........ getting ready to duck!

What to do in this situation?
I asked for a pause in this game around two months ago but during the pause one of the players left the site, then I emailed a mod who said he would unpause if the player didn't respond in day. However another play asked that the pause be left on for a couple days as he needed it but he hasn't returned either. I am frankly sick of this an would like the game cancelled but other players aren't being responsive.. gameID=55365#gamePanel
