diplomacy dislodge question.
Yeah quick question.
Lets say you have countries A and B.
If they each have one piece attempting to move into an empty territory but during that turn, Country A gets dislodged, does the standoff still occur or does B move into its desired territory? Thanks in advance.

What's the name of a picture/movie that changes and transitions smoothly in a loop?
So what I mean is that you don't really notice it's a loop unless you're paying close attention because the end of the loop fits perfectly on the start of the loop. There's no strong feeling of repetition. Just a 'background' continuously moving.
Just looking for the word for such a thing. I saw one quite a while ago and thought I could use one of those in a design, but now I finally have the time to do something with it, I forgot what it's called :-(

Gunboat: Playing as Russia
When, in a gunboat game, in the Spring 1901 moves, England, Germany, Austria and Turkey all make an anti-Russia opening, what is Russia supposed to do, exactly?

WebDiplomacy History Thread
After hearing about that Congo shit I was wondering what other scandals/notorious players/legendary stories there are buried in the annals of this site. I assume some of the elder players would know some of the lore I speak of and can weave some tales of old?

@Bayclown: yeah, Bearenstein was a let down. He pretty much went unnoticed for a long time and everyone thought he was one of the greats.

After his banning, he tried to come back, but he was never the same.

Can't say I ever played a game against him. I just saw his name above mine in the GR and thought "who is this guy and how did he climb so fast?"
I think a couple of linked threads from zultar recapping the memes of the time would be a nice summary.

"who is this guy and how did he climb so fast?"

Huh, I thought the same thing when Sarg first joined the site haha

So was Agent K actually a multi? I just remember a lot of claims about him having cheated, and then been allowed to come back, and him saying it was all a misunderstanding. I don't think I was around when he started or when he left, so I only caught a bit in the middle.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)

@peter, Agent K was the 2nd worse cheater in site history if we are going by number of games he impacted with his cheating.
KingCyrus (511 D)

And worst was.... blankflag?
KingCyrus (511 D)
06 Nov 14 UTC
Wait, when you say "worst cheater" do you mean he was the worst at cheating? Or do you mean that he was the best cheater, in that he was best at it? (second best, I know)
jmo1121109 (3812 D)

Worst was sargmancher.
uclabb (589 D)

Sargmacher wasn't just the worst cheater, he was just the worst. Hated that guy.

As far as site legends go, someone who shan't be forgot is Tettleton's Chew. It's hard to capture him in a single thread, but this is a pretty good one:

Sargmacher was much worse than Agent K. Only had to look at that case once to say it will hopefully never be matched.

Fortunately I never had the displeasure of playing with Sarg, TC Agent K or Bearenstein. Somehow I avoided all of the big-time multis.
ghug (5068 D(B))
06 Nov 14 UTC
TC was primarily hated for his forum persona. I don't think he was an impressive or prolific player even when he cheated.

Sarg and Agent K were both actually good at the game, which made it all even worse.

I still think Tettleton's Chew was a robot or paid to post his/her shit on the forum.

With some digging I found some of these old threads. Pretty interesting stuff and how funny is it that Draugnar donated $100 and then got banned himself.

I'm pretty sure Draugnar donated well over $100.
Still a shame he's gone. I'm still hoping that we give the people who were banned during the turbulent times a while ago get a second chance for christmas or something. On probation perhaps, so you could even choose to immediately ban them when they're not being perfect members or something. That way, it can't do much harm..
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
06 Nov 14 UTC
He donated well over $100 for himself and he donated at least $100 for numerous other players, myself included, and gave the badges away essentially. He also attempted to attack the site, more than once if I recall. It's quite a mixed message.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
06 Nov 14 UTC
Draugnar built this site, Draugnar reserves the right to destroy it.
While I understand the sentiment, I can't imagine that "he donated to the site, so we'll overlook his chronic struggles to follow the rules" sets a precedent anybody would want. If someone like Draugnar were to be reinstated, it couldn't be on the basis of money paid to the site; otherwise you end up being able to buy your way out of trouble.
steephie22 (182 D(S))

And he probably wouldn't have attempted to attack the site if the transition to a more boring forum wouldn't have been so messy. A lot of people 'lost their cool' in that period, and in some cases I really can't blame them.
I understand that the mods do, but since this was all because of a messy transition which won't happen again any time soon, there's not that much reason to keep them banned.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
06 Nov 14 UTC
He also created multis after the fact to try to circumvent his ban. He didn't do a great job at that, but I bet he thought he did.

I think we should reinstate people based on remorse, and a will to change what got them kicked off. I dunno what Draug has been like on vDip, but that's a good place to look.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
06 Nov 14 UTC
@PE: not talking about the money he donated. That's just a sign that shows what's really going on here. Obviously he cared enough about the site.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
06 Nov 14 UTC
@steephie .. he went ballistic in the end because I was nominated for a mod position. That might have just been a trigger, but it had little to do with the forum.

"I think we should reinstate people based on remorse, and a will to change what got them kicked off. I dunno what Draug has been like on vDip, but that's a good place to look."

Agreed. With the people banned during the transition, I imagine there will be a will to change.

Is it normal for people to sign up for very slow games (10 days/phase) and stay quiet?
I am relatively new to webDip. From the little experience I have here, I get the impression that it is not uncommon for very slow games to be pretty quiet. I've had no replies at all from some parties, even though they are giving orders. Is this usual? I thought very slow games would have lots and lots of diplomatic talk.

Control active game play time option ?
Hello,

What if it was possible to control the time allowed for game play, such as, "game only active between the hours of X & Y". Then shorter phase games could be played more easily and not at strange hours of the night. Thoughts?

NFL Pick 'em Week 12: Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow...eh, Buffalo? ;)
So, with Buffalo's game postponed until Monday (and moved to Detroit as, um, Buffalo's sort of buried under snow) and the Raiders having won their first game of the season--and in more than a year!--vs. the rival Chiefs, we enter Week 12. The Lions and Patriots meet in a big clash. Rams//Chargers is an intriguing match-up. Cardinals/Seahawks up in Seattle, and Ravens/Saints on a suddenly-crucial Monday Nighter. Week 12... pick 'em!
