I am about to embark on a buying and building journey for church. They were recently donated a 40" monitor and want to set up a multimedia center in the narthex, so I am buying an Intel Next Unit of Computing to drive it. Any gotchas to look out for from you home builders?

Crazy College Professors
In this thread, tell stories about some of your quirkiest college professors (or high school teachers, if you did not go to college)

"Study after study shows evals correspond with grades.given to a t. You have no way of knowing how your failed students evaluated you. Unless you're telling me every single eval was perfection. You must be TA of the year. "

Whatever, putin. Your claim was that if you hold people to high standards, you get such bad reviews that you lose your funding. Now you're arguing that a few people SURELY left bad reviews. This is bait and switch. (Also, we don't know if that's true).

Abge claims that he holds people to a high standard, but gets overall good evaluations. If true, that refutes your original claim, even if he gets a few poor evals.

" having learned long before that it's not a good idea to have opinions which differ from the person who gets to assign my grade"

My psychology major roommate mentioned the same thing for his psych classes. You needed to give answers using the professor's school of thought interpretations or you would get a failing grade. They showed the same thing in one episode of "Growing Pains."
Invictus (240 D)

Sorry for the triple oost. I actually did get a C- in formal logic, so there's one bad grade.

"Based on what was written. Scolding a student who being incredibly disrespectful doesn't seem "crazy". "

We were told that he became "incandescent with rage." How is "scolding" a reasonable synonym for that?

"The title of the thread is stories about "crazy" professors, Semck. Good grief. "

Touche.

"If true, that refutes your original claim, even if he gets a few poor evals."

You don't now how evals work. "A few bad evals" tanks your score. And the point is he has no way of knowing if anybody "minded" his failing grades.
Invictus (240 D)
09 Jan 14 UTC
You mean they don't have some way of accounting for that? I would think it'd be obvious that a student doing badly in a class would give the instructor a bad evaluation.

Putin

I am hard on my students and yet my evals are not bad. This is the opposite of what you said happens. I'm sure there are some situations where being hard will kill your teaching career, but I have yet to experience it.

"You don't now how evals work. "A few bad evals" tanks your score. And the point is he has no way of knowing if anybody "minded" his failing grades."

I thought you were arguing (even in your first sentence here) that he *could* know, because his evals would suffer. I'm pretty much confused now.

Yet the point remains that, if abge holds people to a high standard, including failing people, and still ends up with net good evals, then your point is refuted.

"You don't now how evals work. "A few bad evals" tanks your score. And the point is he has no way of knowing if anybody "minded" his failing grades."

Well, they were juniors and failing the course meant leaving the dept or staying a whole extra year, so I suspect they would care.

"I thought you were arguing (even in your first sentence here) that he *could* know, because his evals would suffer. I'm pretty much confused now."

Maybe because you're inserting your pedantry where it isn't needed or wanted, and thus confusing yourself.

I wasn't arguing that he *could* know. Over and over again I said he couldn't know, they are anonymous. The only way he *could* know is if they were unanimously wonderful, which is possible I suppose. Like I said, abgemacht is TA of the year.

"I'm sure there are some situations where being hard will kill your teaching career, but I have yet to experience it."

Good for you maybe engineering students are a cut above the rest since they all like engineering.

"Well, they were juniors and failing the course meant leaving the dept or staying a whole extra year, so I suspect they would care."

TA of the year.

Putin33 (111 D)

I said it was possible. And it is also very possible that engineering students are more conscientious than the average. Him calling me a 'bad teacher' based on fuck all was completely out of line.

Do you expect me to believe you repeatedly calling me TA of the year were genuine? Every single time you talk about teaching students it's filled with nothing but hate. So, unless you've managed to repeatedly teach the worst students in history, the problem is probably largely on your end.

"" having learned long before that it's not a good idea to have opinions which differ from the person who gets to assign my grade"

What a crock. Another oppressed libertarian. I call bs."

LOL! I actually learned this the hard way in high school, when I considered myself an atheist and a socialist and ran into problems with a conservative evangelical Protestant history teacher. After spending two back-to-back sentences in summer school, I never made that mistake again in high school or college - and I didn't forget it even though my views changed fairly drastically. I had a few profs in college who weren't like that, but it took awhile (usually at least a couple of classes) before I felt comfortable expressing any independent thoughts if I was at their mercy come grading time.
Putin33 (111 D)
10 Jan 14 UTC
Sorry you don't have the experience of most TAs I've ever spoken with. It was genuine because your rare experience makes your a cut above the rest of us, as you so clearly believe anyway. Go fuck yourself.
Putin33 (111 D)

Invictus (240 D)

Yeah, abgemacht. He was giving you a real compliment, not now backpeddaling in order to give himself the moral high ground and avoid the charge that he's a bad teacher since all we ever hear from him is how awful his students are.
Putin33 (111 D)

Because that's all you've ever said in regards to students here. Maybe you're just venting your frustration and you actually like most students? If so, I'm sure you can see where the confusion comes from.

How many are there? Relatively more or less than here? Although all the east is fine, I'm especially talking about the countries that are considered to be either hinduistic (not sure if that's how you spell it in English) or buddhistic (again not sure). Think India and the like. Not quite the Middle-East.

Email Hasbro! Let's get Diplomacy for Wii U
I don't want to engage in any arguments about consoles, but I have a Wii U and Diplomacy would be absolutely perfect for the system, for both face to face and online games. I have gone to Hasbro's website and emailed them a request to look into developing a Diplomacy game for the Wii U. It won't take but 10 minutes to do, so let's see if we could make some headway.
