Well, at one time, the known world was pretty much ruled by Rome. Until the great explorations of the 15th century, the known world was Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Far and Middle East.

largeham, I dare say you probably know more about this than I do. It is not something I have studied recently, except for reading a few popular books, like Paul Kennedy's. But I think I am right when I say this, military technology changed very quickly through-out the 1930s, such that by the time war broke about most of the powers weapons were out-of-date, but Germany and Japan were more advanced, and the others had to catch up quickly.

The Romans knew of the Chinese (perhaps not before the 1st century CE), but they might as well have been on Mars as far as the Romans were concerned (and vice versa).
