Official Announcement
Dear webDippers,
Draugnar and I are proud to announce that we managed to hack the site, ban the current regime and turned some enlightened members into mods.
We are looking into the cases of other previously banned players to see which were banned unjustly. We're not making any major policy changes, but we're ending the previous tyranny.
Enjoy your stay!

The Greatest People in History Tournament
Now that nominations are in, it is time to decide who really was the greatest person form all of History. Will Ghengis Khan rise to conquer the bracket? Will Tolkien or the Beatles be the first Nominees to win two tournaments? Will Aristotle be proved wrong in his prediction that he will win? Or will a Wild Card take the whole tournament? Only one way to find out.

And note, the tie here is only because I friendly interpreted as valid votes (in favour of Jesus) more statements than were accepted before. Another interesting fact, more people have participated in the debate than cast a vote.

If you want a tiebreaker, I vote Jesus.
TrPrado (461 D)
17 Mar 15 UTC
That knocks out Descartes officially. Even the last time there was a tie, the next vote for either one set the winner.
TrPrado (461 D)
17 Mar 15 UTC
And I vote Alexander. If it were Julius, there would actually be a shot for him. Augustus shouldn't even be this far.
So, according to TrPrado this is the count?

Jesus: 15
Descartes: 14

Remaining Historical Figures:

Leaders:
*10. Augustus
*24. Alexander the Great

Artists:
*26. William Shakespeare
*28. Johann Sebastian Bach

Scientists/Inventors:
*6. Aristotle
*13. Albert Einstein

Wild Card:
*1. Buddha
* Jesus

New Matchup:

Leaders: August vs Al da gr8

Note: Vash needs to update the brackets:

If we're moving on, I vote

Alexander died and his empire immediately disintegrated. Augustus died and his empire remained the strongest in the world for centuries and one of the most impressive in history in all aspects rather than merely in rapid expansion. Alexander was a hugely impressive general, but Augustus left a greater legacy.
TrPrado (461 D)
18 Mar 15 UTC
The Ptolemaic dynasty which had major impact on Augustus's rise to power wouldn't have existed without Alexander. Try harder, ghug.
The Seleucids were nothing to sneeze at, either.
TrPrado (461 D)
18 Mar 15 UTC
Just because he didn't leave his empire behind doesn't mean he never left a considerable legacy.
KingCyrus (511 D)

Alexander was WAY more influential than Augustus. Alexander's main influence on the world was not his empire, but a result from it. The spreading of Greek culture. The Hellenization of vast swaths of land came from him. He opened up new trading routes, for trade and culture, between East and West. He brought Greek sculpture, architecture, poetry, and perhaps most importantly, philosophy to the ancient world.
ghug (5068 D(B))

Greek culture was spreading without Alexander. He sped it up, sure, but a lot of what he tried to do was undone pretty quickly when his empire disintegrated, and most of what he left was happening anyway.

We're at the point in the tournament where everyone had major impact. If either of these guys hadn't existed, the course of history likely would have been entirely different. I'm not going to give him credit for the deeds of a dynasty that emerged from the massive turmoil following his death any more than I'm going to give Augustus credit for the spread of Christianity.
At the end, I'm going back to the roots.

Alexander was the greater general. Alexander was the greater leader. That's my vote.
Also, even if you ignore Alexander's legacy, he destroyed the largest (and first "true") empire in the world, and replaced it with his own.

Could Rome have expanded so much if the entire eastern med were ruled by the Persians? Who could assemble an army of 250,000 men with relative ease?
the.dibster (100 D)

Augustus. Alexander happened to have had a big effect later on, but that wasn't HIM doing it, so it doesn't make him a great leader, just in the right place at the right time born into the right people. Augustus on the other hand, like was pointed out, helped an empire that would last for a while, while Alexander's "empire" fragmented far, far too easily to say that his leadership had helped make a difference. So if we're going for the leaders themselves and their own virtues/talents, we have a clear winner. Alexander is a one-trick war horse while Augustus knew what the whole governing package was like.

Also Augustus actually built an empire from a fractured Rome while Alexander only managed to defeat an empire lead by Darius who is supposed to be a poor ruler anyway. Alexander even named himself king of Persia showing that he conquered an empire not forge one.
Chumbles (791 D(S))

Augustus. Alexander was the better military leader, but in every other way far inferior to Gus. Alexander has the same fundamental flaw as Napoleon: that they could only succeed if the world was perpetually at war.

UK F2F Game
Would anyone be interested in a F2F game in England, sometime in the weeks following the 23rd of March?

Some of the mods were discussing trying to set one up, but obviously we'd need to know if there's enough interest. Where exactly it would be would depend on what's convenient for the people who express interest (and what locations turn out to be possible).

Extraneous Games
Is there a way to hide or remove games that I have been defeated in under the My Games column? It's kind of annoying to have games that you can't affect show up in my screen, and being reminded of a defeat every time I log on isn't fun, either.

Whatever happened to Draugnar?
Back when I used to be really active on this site, Draugnar was one of the most... distinctive personalities in the forum, despite the fact that I don't think I ever saw his points total at anything other than 100 for any period of time (which made a few people assume he was an entry-level noob, lol). Then he got banned, along with draugnar's_ghost, draugnar's_zombie, etc. Is he back under a different name? Is he gone? Sure he was kind of a douche, but man did he know how to troll.
