Official Announcement
Dear webDippers,
Draugnar and I are proud to announce that we managed to hack the site, ban the current regime and turned some enlightened members into mods.
We are looking into the cases of other previously banned players to see which were banned unjustly. We're not making any major policy changes, but we're ending the previous tyranny.
Enjoy your stay!

2015 MLB Preview and Predictions
It's that time of year again. Buy yourself some peanuts, some crackerjacks...maybe some syringes and performance-enhancing drugs, and get ready for another baseball season! My predictions for the standings, 10 playoff teams, playoff picks, World Series winner and then 10 predictions for the season are below...add your own. :)

The Greatest People in History Tournament
Now that nominations are in, it is time to decide who really was the greatest person form all of History. Will Ghengis Khan rise to conquer the bracket? Will Tolkien or the Beatles be the first Nominees to win two tournaments? Will Aristotle be proved wrong in his prediction that he will win? Or will a Wild Card take the whole tournament? Only one way to find out.

UK F2F Game
Would anyone be interested in a F2F game in England, sometime in the weeks following the 23rd of March?

Some of the mods were discussing trying to set one up, but obviously we'd need to know if there's enough interest. Where exactly it would be would depend on what's convenient for the people who express interest (and what locations turn out to be possible).

Is there a way to hide or remove games that I have been defeated in under the My Games column? It's kind of annoying to have games that you can't affect show up in my screen, and being reminded of a defeat every time I log on isn't fun, either.

Whatever happened to Draugnar?
Back when I used to be really active on this site, Draugnar was one of the most... distinctive personalities in the forum, despite the fact that I don't think I ever saw his points total at anything other than 100 for any period of time (which made a few people assume he was an entry-level noob, lol). Then he got banned, along with draugnar's_ghost, draugnar's_zombie, etc. Is he back under a different name? Is he gone? Sure he was kind of a douche, but man did he know how to troll.

Difference between phpDiplomacy and webdiplomacy
Hi,
What is the difference between those two sites ?
mromain (100 D)
25 Mar 15 UTC
I purchased Diplomacy on the Apple App Store and only discover this website.
Can you let me know the difference between phpDiplomacy (https://www.speedycomputing.net/dip/index.php ) and webdiplomacy ?

Many thanks

Romain

It's just the old name of the Site.

but it seems the games are not common between the two sites and the Apple APP only refer to phpDiplomacy

The nice thing about Facebook/php/speedycomputing diplomacy is that my work computers allow it for placing orders at lunchtime, meaning it can be played without resorting to mobile phones. There seem to be a few good players there, and a lot of lazy nmr prone tits.

mromain: phpDiplomacy/webDiplomacy is this website. The old URL, phpdiplomacy.net still redirects here. The code of this website is open source on SourceForge (http://sourceforge.net/projects/phpdiplomacy/) and has been used to develop most new Diplomacy websites launched since the code of this website was written. Examples include Facebook Diplomacy and PLAYdiplomacy, as well as many websites dedicated to variant play or particular languages.

I've never seen the URL you provided, but it seems to be related to Facebook Diplomacy. I've never heard of an Apple App Store implementation of Diplomacy.
mromain (100 D)
25 Mar 15 UTC
Here is the link to the application.
https://itunes.apple.com/fr/app/the-game-of-diplomacy/id325461768?mt=8

The issue with this app is you do not see the previous orders however what is good is it is very easy to place the orders

mromain: Among they few things I've heard about Facebook Diplomacy is that it's glitchy and uses a way out-of-date phpDiplomacy code. Perhaps the creator of Facebook Diplomacy is trying to update his code, but it sounds like he's just trying to monetize his lackluster rip-off with a paid Apple App. I would try to get your money back.
Octavious (2701 D)
25 Mar 15 UTC
I've not encountered any glitches yet. It is rather clunky and you have to type /draw to vote for draw (in the non-app version at least), but that gives it a kind of old school charm. Where it falls down is the relatively high numbers of players who don't give a damn about buggering off in the middle of a game.
Octavious (2701 D)
25 Mar 15 UTC
Of course, I may have just been unlucky
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))

@octavious: yeah, you'll get that in any site/app with a smaller user-base. I tried out backstabbr.com because a friend was on it and wanted me to test it out. It sucked. 2 years in, I was the only one playing.

so to recap:
- those two website are two independent websites with two independent community of players and games.
- only the second one offer an IPHONE application and a facebook apps
- this one (webdiplomacy) is the real website with the largest community

Am I correct?

Would be great to have an iphone/ipad application for Webdiplomacy. Is it planned?
Currently, no. We have a small group of devs and contributors on github who are working to improve the site. That alone is a huge amount of work for them.
yebellz (729 D(G))
26 Mar 15 UTC
There is also this other independent site that is also based on this site's code:
http://www.vdiplomacy.com/
Valis2501 (2850 D(G))
26 Mar 15 UTC
independent somewhat; there's purposeful code development and moderator team crossover / communication even if they are technically independent.
yebellz (729 D(G))
26 Mar 15 UTC
The "speedycomputing" clone appears to be forked from a very old version of the software (version 0.82 from Oct 1, 2008).

This site is an installation using the latest version of the code (v1.36) found here:
https://github.com/kestasjk/webDiplomacy

@Valis2501: yes, I suppose "sister-site" is a better term to use, but the databases (and hence accounts, games, forum, etc.) are independent, which is what I was trying to convey.
Yes, I know this is really off topic, but join this game, beginners only... http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=157530

Wait, why is he real but "Civil Disorder Germany" (no userID or stat page but you can put him into the profile search and it'll find him) isn't?
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
26 Mar 15 UTC
In the early days, a game could be created with fewer than 7 people. When that happened, certain countries were assigned a "Civil Disorder" country just to fill the void. All holds were used for orders so the game could progress.

Eventually, people came along and named their user name "Civil Disorder 'country name' ". Later came Civil Disorder Kestas, and then code was redone so games couldn't start with less than 7 people.

The old diplomacy board game i have bought allowed less than seven players games. There was rulles on how to play in this way. I would appreciate very much if it could be replicated in webdiplomacy.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
26 Mar 15 UTC

1) The rules for less than seven players are crap.
2) they make sense to have if you can't get 7 people together in one room.
3) the last time there were less than 7 people posting on the forum at once was 2006-ish.
JECE (1248 D)

yebellez: So is the SourceForge URL I gave now out of date?

mromain: Yes, this is the real website: the original, official, open-source, ad-free implementation without 'premium' content restricted to members which pay/donate money.

Less than 7 players?
Two player games, try Intimate Diplomacy
Three player games: Don't, just don't - open a bottle of wine and play cards
Four players: open a bottle of wine and play Bridge
Five players: Ancient Med (Brilliant variant)
Six players: make Austria Germany a single country called the Axis , rest as normal
yebellz (729 D(G))
26 Mar 15 UTC
Yes, the sourceforge link is out of date, and only seems to go up to version 1.0 in its downloads.

The development activity has moved to GitHub. Note that a link to the GitHub repo can be found at the bottom of the page.
