Country Selection
Although there is a very nice message about how countries are assigned equally based upon previous game country assignments, I have been in 4 games on this site and have gotten to be Austria 4 times. Nice to be so lucky, but I am really confused how this works. Could someone in charge please explain it to me.

Should there be a Punishment for going CD (civil disorder/leaving a game)?
Should there be a Punishment for a player going CD / leaving a game?
I would argue for a there being a punishment if a player does it more than once per every 4 months or something, but i am not sure what a good punishment would be? (points taken away is easy, but also easily ignored, perhaps a reprimand private message, or a cool off period where they can't join new games, etc.)

0.9 released
0.9 is out now, it addresses a fair few of the common gripes and requests that have registered over the last few months, adds some new interface elements, and makes a couple of small rule changes

Kestas - when someone votes for a pause or draw, there is no longer any notification in the global chat. Can you put this back, as currently it is easy to miss the fact that someone wants a pause?
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
24 Jul 09 UTC
Oh and just a silly question, but why on earth is this new version of the site being described as "version 0.9" ?

Surely the first version would be "Version 1.0" and then you count upwards from there?
"They took the bar! The whole fucking bar!"
thewonderllama (100 D)

That versioning style is rather common, actually. The idea being that when the developer doesn't yet feel the software has has hit a desired level of polish/features, the version number stays below 1.0. Consider it still in beta. :)
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
24 Jul 09 UTC
What happens if Kestas makes more changes, but still isn't totally happy with it? 0.91? 0.9.1? 0.9(b)?
thewonderllama (100 D)
24 Jul 09 UTC
He likely has a loose idea of the roadmap for the project, but if he were to make another release pre-1.0, it'll likely be 0.91 or 0.95, using phpDip's history as a guide.

that was always the case, until the game ends, it stays on your list. but maybe it shouldn't on the new home page. what do people think?

and you don't suck, vex. just need to keep getting better!! =)

I joked that we we're running out of numbers before 1.0, and he said something to the effect of he quite likes the way that the numbers are following the years, so 1.0 won't necessarily mean "out of beta"

Is there something wrong with the pause function?

In this game: http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=11858 everyone has voted for a pause, but the game has failed to pause.

What's wrong?

" I joked that we we're running out of numbers before 1.0, and he said something to the effect of he quite likes the way that the numbers are following the years, so 1.0 won't necessarily mean "out of beta" "

Maybe he can start naming versions like sports games, "WebDip 2010", "WebDip 2011" etc...

A couple questions and suggestions:
1) What order (if any) is there to the games listings, particularly under "New"? The old version ordered them decreasing by pot size, but I can't figure out the logic behind the new one.
2) The votes are confusing. In my current game (http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=11843), a vote for "Pause" meant a vote for unpause. I'm not sure if that's true in all games, or just a quirk in ours since we were in the middle of voting for a pause when we got transferred over.
3) More on voting - it's confusing to have a "Cancel" vote and a "cancel" list of votes. Perhaps the list could be renamed "Withdraw vote" or something similar, so that there isn't confusion? Or, better yet, name the left set of votes "Voting options: Click to vote" and the right set "Active votes: Click to withdraw"
4) I agree with Jamie that it would be nice to see votes in the global chat.
5) What is the logic behind the order in which people/countries are listed at the bottom? The old version was a fixed order by country; this one seems to be a dynamic random order. I thought at first that it was in order of SCs, but on my last login to the game above I went from the top to the bottom. So I'm not really sure how they are organized. I'm also not a huge fan of ordering by SCs, since that makes it very hard to hide your leader status, especially since FtF, postal, and email games don't continually broadcast who is in first place. I think that the old way, ordering by a fixed and arbitrary order of countries, was much better strategically.

Something weird that just happened: In the forum, when I tried to click the "last page" button on the page navigator, a scroll bar appeared to keep me from pressing it. I managed to make it by moving one page at a time with the inside button, but the outside button was blocked by this mystery scroll bar. I'm using IE, for what it's worth, although I can give it a shot on Firefox later and see what happens.
djbent (2572 D(S))

@grncton-

1) the are in order of when created, it seems to me.
5) it does seem to be by SCs, and personally i like that. otherwise russia always has disadvantage, and england (for example) an advantage.
Xapi (194 D)
24 Jul 09 UTC
3)
I think replacing the "cancel:" text for a "Withdraw vote:" text is simple enough and might clarify things.
grncton (672 D)
24 Jul 09 UTC
@djbent - What would be the advantage/disadvantage of being listed first/last? I'd prefer the anonymity of a later listing rather than have the other 6 players see, "Yes, this player is ahead and you need to team up now!" I'm curious to know what advantage you see in being listed first.
djbent (2572 D(S))
24 Jul 09 UTC
i'm thinking as the other six, rather than #1, i guess =P

and the disadvantage to russia in the map (looks huge) gets evened out by this.

Hello kestas.....in the following game in the retreat phase, every player has a green check by his name, but the retreats are not being resolved. Can you check when you have a chance?

Xapi (194 D)

Really, any serious player knows the tactical and strategical position in the board and doesn't need an ordered list to know who has the most SCs or who's in the better position.

The advantage is that players that were eliminated get to the bottom of the list, so you can get quickly the info on exact number of SCs and units and weather they finalized or not, their log in times, but only on those who actually matter, not having to scroll through the dead.
djbent (2572 D(S))
24 Jul 09 UTC
@xapi and grncton - and it seems you yourself are always at the bottom, though above the dead players, which makes sense in a way, too.

Sorry if it's on the queue already, but http://www.webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=11456 should rewind to the previous retreat phase (of Spring 1911) as Germany has missed the chance to retreat.
JesusPetry (258 D)

I should add that this phase was bypassed after a crash.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

Kestas,

Is it possible that the finalizing, drawing, pausing, unpausing, and such are not happening because the system isn't ignoring the CD and eliminated countries who haven't voted?
Alderian (2425 D(S))
24 Jul 09 UTC
Also, I saw where someone mentioned a CD position getting a portion of a draw or something like that. If so, could also be related to eliminated/CD countries not being removed from the list of countries that matter. Just a thought. I could be barking up the wrong tree.

I must admit I was a little taken back when I saw the new look, but now I have had a chance to see the new features I am very impressed. Love the way you can see all the orders (including retreats and build etc). Love the way you can see all the maps of a game on one screen. Private messaging - excellent. Archived threads - excellent. I could go on and on. So many new features. Well done Kestas.

Couple more things:
1) Sorting in game search doesn't work well. Even if it does within one page of search results, it doesn't between the pages (on your first search page with alphabetical sorting, let's say, you have games form A to P, but on the second page it again starts with A instead of all games with first letter A being on the first page). Besides, when you get to the second page of search results, sorting criteria (which worked for first page) sometimes is lost and games are displayed in random order.
2) Contaminating unjoinable games in the "Open" tab (games for which no takeover available).
3) New arrangement of game board page: name of the game and phase is now far away from orders list, so when (if) you take screenshots of your finalized orders (which I guess is really relevant right now, when new version is still in bugs-ironing state) you can't prove which phase they pertain to (the game identity is still preserved in the address bar as game number), unlike before when on the one screenshot you could see orders, game name and phase.

One more issue I recently had: I went to look at page 2 of the "New" games. It was empty for some reason, but that's not the problem - when I went back to "My Games" (I'm only in one), it was empty too! Oh no! I eventually fixed this by going back to New, returning to page 1, and then returning to My Games, but I get the feeling that I shouldn't have to do that...

Aid us, m'lords! :-)
If I made a move on Constantinople with an army, and in the next turn my army enters it without changing the color of the territory (just with it's small square with my color), does that mean that I didn't conquer the territory? Could I move the army somewhere else (ex. Bulgaria) and still hold Constantinople, or do I lose it? Thanx in advance!
