Thule bug?
I convoyed an army to Thule so I wouldn't have to make a double convoy to NWT, and now any time I try to move or convoy the army my Chrome page has an error and I have to reload. Fortunately I don't need the army, but it's an annoying bug because I'd like to try this move in a bigger game but don't want to risk the error. Anyone else encountered this? Here's the game:

Ah, Mr. Jefferson, Where HAVE You Gone...Tax Atheists For Not Going To Church? HA!
http://clergygonewild.com/cults/53-other-cults/1670-christian-leader-wants-to-tax-atheists-for-not-going-to-church
Surely everyone here can agree this is simply ludicrous? Even if you're a believer...well, by that logic, what do you do with Muslims and practicing Jews? Tax them for attending Temple or Mosque instead of Church? What DID ever happen to our American belief in a Separation of Church and State?

Well to be fair, the Pilgrims did this quite regularly.
then again, the pilgrims did this in the 17th century.

Didn't Europe fight for, oh, 350 years, over this same issue? Didn't the USA, oh, make fun of them for it?

I guess the Europeans made fun of the USA for changing french fries to freedom fries too. Just goes to show that nobody's perfect. But women are a step below men, and if you're not white, you suck, and being Jewish is a federal crime, and by the way, if you're gay, go fuck yourself, except you can't because you're gay.
and, finally, the guy didn't say this seriously, it was obviously a dig at obamacare

I think that the reason I've been turned off by religion is that I hear of nothing but missiles fired over it and thousands of prisoners traded for soldiers. I hear of people being attacked for what they think and I see presidential candidates trying to attack the other because he's not Christian. I hear politicians support religion and then say, "Oh, no, not that one, just this one." So anything religious and political at the same time is bad. Just seems weird that our founding fathers, who all the America-is-Christian nuts say the support, kind of said the same thing...
no they kinda just wanted to practice their own religion in peace
obiwanobiwan (248 D)

Well, even as a dig at Obamacare, it's a bad one (and believe me, I like Obamacare, but there are some GOOD shots you can take at it...) ;)

I mean...examine that claim "we know going to church is good for you, and good for your health."

How?

Even as a joke that's too absurd to work...

Ask those little Catholic altar boys how good going to Church was for them. (And I'm not taking on the whole Catholic faith here--we have to save some fun for another day, after all. Just saying...between that...and the Phelps family in Kansas, aka, the Westboro Baptist Church, and other Church-cult hybrids...the religious wars between sects...and that's just the beginning--

Going to Church may not hurt your health--I'm sure Crazy Anglican and semck are none the worse for it--but still, it doesn't help...it's such a gaping stupid claim, I...I can't even laugh at it, because, as the article points out, 40% of this country thinks the Earth is 10,000 years old or less and rejects Evolution for Not-At-All-Intelligent Design...I just got really, really depressed typing that...40%. ...Somehow, I think Jefferson would be depressed if he could see that statistic...)
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

I wasn't making a dig at Obamacare. I'm fully supportive of it. Seriously.

I think Mr. Jefferson would support this proposal, in the anti-tyrannical spirit of satire in which it was intended.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
09 Jul 12 UTC
"40% of this country thinks the Earth is 10,000 years old" .. yes, those are the same 40% that sell their daughters for a fake gold nugget.
wow obi, bringing in Catholic alter boys. Are you serious?

The guy is obviously making a point "If you force your ideas of well-being on you, I should be able to force mine on you." Think what you want about it, but one thing is for sure is it wasn't meant to be literal
@ Obi

You just seem to be
citing the commentary. What was the original piece?
Levelhead (1419 D(G))
09 Jul 12 UTC
...about a right-wing religeous fundamentalist written by left-wing antireligeous fundamentalist.
Yeah, in looking farther into this commentary it seems highly suspect. Citing 40% of Americans are YEC when another source on this piece (from npr also commentary, not the original) states that it's 66% of Republican voters in Mississippi that reject evolution.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
09 Jul 12 UTC
Alright, one at a time, then...

@bo_sox:

I was referring to SC's statement.

@Tolstoy:

Given Jefferson's being a deist--and actually possibly an atheist much like Franklin, there's speculation over a couple of letters, but in any case, certainly Deist--and advocating quite strongly throughout his writings and career for a "wall of separation" between Church and State, I very much doubt he'd approve.

Of the satire? Maybe, though again, I think it's pretty poor satire...
If taken seriously? Not at all.

@SC:

Well, the altar boys bit as more of a joke than anything else...a bad one, perhaps, but hey, their's was a poor joke too, so I suppose one failed funny deserves another.

(Though if we WERE to take that claim of "Church is good for you" as a claim seriously, I would certainly raise the possibility of that sort of abuse as an all-too-real, all-too-pertinent counterexample.)

To be honest, I think it was meant as one of those "I'm joking...of course I am..."of course" I am..." jokes, you know?

Where you say it in jest, but maybe, just maybe, if you could get away with saying all or part of it as a serious statement and not either be laughed or scorned out of town, you might just do so?

@Levelhead:

Point taken, though that's just where the link came from, ie, from a group on Facebook, so I didn't track down the source myself, just shared it, and there's probably a better, more balanced account out there.

@Crazy Anglican:

I don't know the original piece, as I said, I just got this link from my Facebook feed.

As for just citing the commentary--well, feeling that it's a travesty that 40% of the US believes that *is* a position of mine, not just a cited bit from the source.

As for the numbers:

40% is relatively consistent with other polls I've heard and seen, so I'm inclined to believe that...

And if I recall, one poll named Mississippi the most conservative nation in the Union, and that's Bible Belt central, so 66% wouldn't surprise me.
(Though if we WERE to take that claim of "Church is good for you" as a claim seriously, I would certainly raise the possibility of that sort of abuse as an all-too-real, all-too-pertinent counterexample.)

So I guess sports and school are bad for you you idiot. And yes, you are an idiot...
and just to spell it out for you before irrelevant George Orwell references are vomited all over this thread, the sports world and the education world are continually rocked by such scandals. So by using your inane logic, School and Sports are bad for you.
SacredDigits (102 D)
09 Jul 12 UTC
66% of Republican voters in Mississippi, one of the most conservative states, wouldn't equal 66% of the population. In 2008, for instance, McCain got 56% of the Mississippi vote, Obama got 43%. So 2/3 (66%) of that 56% would be about 38%...less than 40%. So I do doubt the 40% mark even if I accept the 66% figure as true.

And I agree with Santa. I don't currently attend any form of religious institution, but have attended institutions of three different faiths regularly at different times in my life, and I do think that church does do good things for many people. I was a Catholic altar boy as a kid, I still feel that way. And no, nothing untoward occurred in my time being one, nor did it for either of my brothers, and the group of us were altar boys for at least five different priests in three different parishes. What happened with certain awful individuals and the insane cover-ups about it were deplorable, but they aren't indicative of every Catholic parish or every Catholic priest, or even a majority of them. I've rejected the Catholic church and Christianity in general, but I do have to state that this constantly coming up is really wearing thin. Might as well just paint all professionals of any sort as molesters because, as Santa said, there's constant cases of that sort in schools and sports, as well as with doctors, child care workers, hell, might as well say having a family is bad for you.
@ Obi

That latest gallup poll that cites 40% of Americans believe something over another is based on this statement. "God created human beings pretty much as they are now around 10,000 years ago". Note that it says nothing about God creating the world at that time so it isn't saying 40% are YEC advocates. For instance Cro-magnon man was aaround 10,000 years ago and competeing with Neanderthals within that time period. If I believe that God created the Cro-Magnons (and I do, I just believe He created the Neanderthals too), then I could be placed in that catergory even though I am most decidedly not a YEC advocate. In fact my kids were standing under a fossil of an Argentinasaurus yesterday (Gasp Sunday, no less!). I was proud of my ten year old who pronounced Giganotosaurus correctly even though the employee at the Museum insisted on calling it a Gigantosaurus. The point though is that the question never asked about the creation of earth and its time frame, or at the very least was unnecessarily vague on that point.
Another question conducted by the same group shows that 25% of the population reject evolution outright "In fact, Charles Darwin is noted for developing the theory of evolution. Do you, personally, believe in the theory of evolution, do you not believe in evolution, or don't you have an opinion either way?" I’d propose that within this population you’ll probably find your YEC adherents.
http://www.pollingreport.com/science.htm

However, 70% of people think that a president’s stance on Creationism really doesn’t have much to do with whether or not he or she’d be a good president. The remaining 30% are split between those that think a Creationist wouldn't make a good President and those who think an Evolutionist wouldn't make a good President.

Here's why the Earth is young:

There is scientific proof that the sun is shrinking 5 feet/hour. Thus the sun would have to have been as big as the orbit of the earth 20 million years ago. You can see why this is impossible. Also, there is no evidence for civilization beyond c. 4500 BC. This makes it more likely the earth was created c. 500 bc then c. 5 bya
.... and again only 30% of Americans buy into the idea that evolutionism or creationism is really important enough to make political decisions based upon.

Levelhead (1419 D(G))

@Sbyvl36: there is no reliable scientific evidence anywhere today expressing values in feet per hour. Your logic and argumentation suck.
SacredDigits (102 D)
09 Jul 12 UTC
And beyond that, there's no evidence that it's been a constant rate for millions of years. Just because something is happening now (if it even is) doesn't mean it's been doing exactly that at the same rate for its entire existence.
Levelhead (1419 D(G))
09 Jul 12 UTC
The problem with creationists is that they are fundamentally stupid. Try to argue with a stupid person. You'll get no peace.

<< Proverbs 26:4 >>
Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest you be like him yourself
Which statistics, hammac?

that most people don't get that worked up about Creationism vs. Evolution (granted those that do REALLY do)

or

that 40% of Americans are YEC adherents?

This is obvious satire on the radio host's part, and even if it weren't a tax on not going to church is wildly unconstitutional. Typical obiwanobiwan making tempests out of molehills.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

@Sbyvl36 .. I don't care if you listen to me one bit because you won't. Anyway:

Do you believe that there are stars in the sky? Do you believe that the sun exists? So do I.

THERE IS MORE EVIDENCE POINTING TO EVOLUTION THAN THERE IS STARS IN THE SKY.

I don't need to explain. Open your head and look it up.
Invictus (240 D)
09 Jul 12 UTC
I believe in evolution, but I think you're underestimating just how many stars there really are.

http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2010/12/01/scientists-sextillion-stars/

The article says there are 300 sextillion stars. I'd be surprised if there have even been 300 sextillion individual animals in Earth's history.

USS Iowa (BB-61) vs. IJN Yamato
To commemorate the Iowa's recent opening as a museum ship (and the official end of the battleship as a weapon of naval warfare), who do you think would win between a head-to-head, one-on-one match-up between the USS Iowa (or any Iowa-class) and the Yamato?

So we're looking at adopting another cat this weekend (that will bring us to 2 cats). Has anyone else found that some of the rescue for either cats or dogs have some ridiculous questions. A question about Diplomacy (not Jesus)........sorry to be boring
If a game has a 24-hour phase and everybody makes their Spring moves and Readys up in 5 minutes how long do you have to wait before it moves to the next phase?
Even in 24 hour games if everybody is Ready in 5 minutes would you not want the game to progress straight away.?
I know that the Retreat and Build phase work this way but not sure about the Diplomacy phases.
