The war of independence does seem like a hell of a waste of effort though. The Canadians achieved much the same without having to shoot anybody or burn anyone's home to the ground. If there was such a thing as a route to self determination competition they would kick the States' arse.

Even though they celebrate an inaccurate date, for Christians Easter and Christmas are more important. As Americans, September 17, 1787/March 4, 1789 (adoption/ratification of the Constitution) January 1, 1863 (Emancipation Proclamation), and May 9, 1865 (end of the Civil War) are all more important.

Happy Independence Day. And while yes, it is kind of "right to invade Native American territory" day (one of the big things the colonials wanted was the frontier moved west which the British wouldn't allow because they didn't want to get into more fights with natives)...I'm happy to be an American no matter how we got to where we are or how much where we are compares to where we'd like to be. Because America is more than a country, it's a dream, and I think today of all days we Americans can acknowledge that while we don't really achieve that dream and in a lot of ways never have and never will, it's a good dream to dream together and strive for.

Funnily enough, most British people like me tend to forget that the 4th is your independence day; not because we think you belong to us but because we've gotten used to you being seperate.

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the fact that slavery was abolished... if anything that was one of the biggest steps forward that America took that day as far as I can see

Lincoln was talking about war dead, but you could just easily extend this to all those who have died in the course of American history, American and non-American:

Brits are cool, and Canadians are nice neighbors, but I LOVE being a citizen of the United States of America, warts and all. At least this country has a level of freedom of speech that allows us to mock, naval gaze, and hate openly. I work in China, and I'm telling you, it is really something to live in a country without free speech, and don't even y to defend that country on that issue. 300,000 gov't employees whose job it is to monitor the nation's Internet activity. Amazing!
