PW Gunboat 5 Point Challenges
Would anyone like to join me for some passworded 5 D gunboat games? I'd like to get as many people involved as possible for some fun gunboat games not orientated on points but that are still good quality. Add your name to the list if you're interested please. All games will be anonymous and 25 hour phase length, thank you.

Why does Germany go to Sweden in Fall '01 so often?
I can understand moving to Denmark in spring to keep the threat alive as diplomatic leverage, but by moving to Sweden right away, Germany angers Russia. Germany's usually going to be able to take Sweden away when he chooses anyway if Russia doesn't open strong to Scandinavia, so why are people so eager to make an enemy right off the bat?

Vaftrudner's statistics
Hello all!

kestas has been kind enough to give me a dump of the database with all personal details removed, but all game data is intact. This means that I can produce statistics of any kind, and you can request what you'd like to see here. Ask me for anything, and I'll see if I can make it happen!

Most pointless opening unit moves by country...

England.

Ignoring the Yorkshire pudding as Lpl-Yor makes sense if not bounced, I suggest that Lpl-Cly can only ever be the product of a misorder.
YadHoGrojaUL (330 D)
16 Apr 12 UTC
France.

More difficult. Most French moves have some purpose in S1901. Mar-Gas might qualify, but that army can go somewhere useful in A1901, so I'll plump for Par-Bre as most futile.
YadHoGrojaUL (330 D)

Germany.

Kie-Ber is only for the most cowardly admirals.
YadHoGrojaUL (330 D)

Italy.

Trip's example is disqualified as its actually ok if Austria doesn't move to Ven. I can't see any reason why Italy would want a unit on Tus, although if Rom moves it can at least support hold Ven. Ven-Tus wins.

Vie-Boh. Unhappy at the prospect of being attacked by 3 neighbours? Make it a full house by attacking the fourth!
YadHoGrojaUL (330 D)

Russia.

War-Lvn might possibly be of use in a berserker amphibious attack on Scandinavia. Sev-Arm wins as being even more useless if it doesn't bounce.

Ank -Arm is as useless as the Russian move above, but is trumped by Con -Smy.
ghug (5068 D(B))

I have problems with a few of these:

Liverpool-Clyde can be used to show good faith to France and/or Germany in the sense that you won't be convoying to wither of the low countries.

Sev-Arm can be used as part of an anti-Turkish attack or a slingshot Juggernaut, I don't really see what's so bad about that.
For France, maybe not the bed but I can think of a use. If he wants to convoy an army through his Mao fleet to Portugal, and doesn't want to seem to leave his home center undefended. That way he would be in a better position come 02 if he builds two fleets, he would be able to force the channel in spring and then take Irish in the fall
Bed is autocorrect for best
YadHoGrojaUL (330 D)
16 Apr 12 UTC
I can see the point of Lpl-Cly in a gunboat. Conversely, Sev-Arm would only be (semi) rational in full press.
cteno4 (100 D)
16 Apr 12 UTC
I'm a fan of Sev-Arm if it's negotiated in advance.

AncientMemories: Such a move would be better done with Par-Gas; that would allow for coverage of Mar (without risking the loss of Spain), Par, or Bre should any of them come under attack.
Gobbledydook (1389 D(B))

Turkey A Con to anywhere other than Bulgaria.

Maybe, but the idea is to make it seem like the army is already there and so of course will remain and cover its home center. Mars would be able to hold in the spring and move to Spain in the fall for the same reason. Also, the very fact it seems so ridiculous/inept while not doing damage to openening possibilities makes it a powerful move of misdirection. The idea is that if you are in gas, an opportunistic EC England may try to sneak Brest. If you are already in Brest, this is much less likely.

England: Edi-Cly is even more useless than Lvp-Cly, in my opinion.

Germany: Mun-Boh. Also Ber-Sil.
Tasnica (3366 D)
16 Apr 12 UTC
I see Ancient's point. That could have some advantage over Par-Gas if England opens to the Channel.

How about London-Wales, though? Has anyone ever seen this move played?
Tasnica (3366 D)
16 Apr 12 UTC
@cteno4: What's wrong with Lvp-Edi? This is a fairly common move for England.
cteno4 (100 D)
16 Apr 12 UTC
Lvp-Edi is pointless in the context of what else is going on, although I suppose Lvp-Cly would be even worse.
Tasnica (3366 D)
16 Apr 12 UTC
Lvp-Edi is part of a common opening where you also send fleets to North and Norwegian, allowing you to perform a convoy with either fleet in the fall.
ghug (5068 D(B))
16 Apr 12 UTC
@Tas, he gave a set of moves with which Lvp-Edi would be completely useless.
Tasnica (3366 D)
16 Apr 12 UTC
...Oh! I thought he was proposing three different moves for England, all of which are worth under any circumstance.
