Holiday Pausing
I know a lot of games will have many people requesting pauses for Christmas and New Years. Please try to honor these pauses, as it isn't unexpected. Also, when requesting, please put an end date, so we don't have to deal with all the mod emails about it...

I wonder... why not force pause ALL games at a certain hour?
Because different people may need pauses at different times and some games may not need pauses at all?
Geofram (130 D(B))
22 Dec 11 UTC
Well, let's be clear. We cannot force pause a game unless every member within the game consents. So don't send us an email saying "Johnny refuses to pause for Christmas," even if it is a tournament game, the Tournament Director must be the one to send us an email.

FORCE pause?
that's harsh- are you Assuming all players celebrate Xmas?
I celebrate it, but there are loads who don't so a forced pause is just plain arrogant
Cachimbo (1181 D)
22 Dec 11 UTC
As we say in French: Du calme! (which I will roughly translate here by: calm the fuck down).

There was nothing arrogant in thinking that it might be worth considering a forced pause. It's not like I suggested we shut down the site. In fact, it's not like I suggested anything. I voiced a question that came to mind upon reading Knoxy's preface to this thread. Therefore, should there be a forced pause, it would always be possible for the players who wish it to unpause and keep playing.

The only assumption behind my question is that a majority of people will be celebrating something these days and may not be in a position to keep playing.
I think it's a safe assumption.
And it's certainly devoid of any judgement.

So yeah... Du calme.

there is no way that if one person refuses to unpause that the game can continue if the other 6 for example want to play.
Forcing a pause will set a precedent for this.
You knew Xmas was coming a year ahead so, if you can't submit moves, accept you will CD and move on- it's common courtesy to simply ask others to pause and accept it if they don't

This is not a Christian Server. We will not be force-pausing games for Christmas.
Mujus (1495 D(B))

As a Christian, I'll willingly pause for the holidays of any religion, or for any reasonable request. Not to do so when a reasonable request is made is just mean-spirited.

Sydney, in my experience, the mods will unpause a game if it looks like a player has abandoned it.
Skittles (1014 D)
22 Dec 11 UTC
I agree. I'm sure most people would be willing to pause if requested. However, there's people that would refuse because they might have commitments in January that a Christmas pause may cause them to have to leave the game at a later time.

Of course, there's also people that will refuse to pause because they either simply don't care that others cannot make it, or even worse, they WANT other players to NMR to give themselves an advantage.
fortknox (2059 D)
22 Dec 11 UTC
Guys guys guys.... I asked you to try and honor the pause... by pausing. I didn't say, nor inflect that we would be force pausing.

The part about putting in an end date was so that if someone DOESN'T unpause on said due date, and we get an email, we can see that a due date was supplied and can force UNpause it.
What happened when, for example, we switched servers, was that people left & didn't unpause and we had to try to judge whether that person needed extra time or just wasn't coming back. Having an end date established makes our life a lot easier.

And I said 'try to honor it', not 'honor it, ya douchebags'. Why? Because not everyone will want a pause and in some games, everyone may want to play over the holiday. But if there are 6 out of seven really wanting the pause, don't be a dick that will win because of 6 NMR, k? I ask you to please try and honor pauses, especially since it shouldn't be a surprise that a majority of folks will want one.

Make sense now?

Fort, I don't think anyone misunderstood or disagreed what you were suggesting. They were simply responding to someone else's idea of a forced pause.
Cachimbo (1181 D)
22 Dec 11 UTC
Okay! Let's be clear: I was wondering! Not suggesting, not claiming it was a good idea. Wondering, and then subjecting the object of my thoughts to the opinions of the crowd.

So...

In Christmas spirit (and by the way, I'm not even Christian, or religious at all for that matter), I will wish well upon others instead of engaging into mindless fights with people here.

Dear Sidney:
You've expressed the wish that I get fucked, and hopefully by someone! That's very considerate of you but I can assure you that I have all that I need on that front. I can only assume, however, that if this is the first thing you wish upon others, it just might be that you in fact would wish it upon yourself. So let me join my voice to your unexpressed wishes and hope that Christmas will see to your sexual desires being finally met.

Abge:
You're right. This server is non-denominational and players can take care of pausing their games themselves. What will you do, however, if one or two players refuse to hear the other players' request for a pause on the grounds that "this is not a Christian Server" and that they therefore have no obligations towards Christian players? Will you enforce a pause if the majority wishes it? Seems to me like that would run counter to your claim that the mods should not interfere in the name of any religious belief or practice.

Food for thought...

I would vote for pause on Christmas, Thanksgiving day, Hanuka, or Ramadan if someone asks....The truth is great majority of the players here are from Cristian countries so this appeal is perfectly valid, and non Christians should not be offended by it...I don't think that non-americans were offended when many games was paused because of Thanksgiving day aether.

As abge said, if one person objects and tells us he/she objects, we don't pause. I wasn't suggesting I was even with a majority. I was just pleaing to not be a jackass by not pausing when everyone else wants to. I was trying to preempt the call for christmas pauses so it doesn't take anyone by "surprise"... you know, with christmas always being a different month and day each year and all....

The greatest danger to us all is the fear of failure.
It's that simple. Without failure to identify the errors individuals and society make total disaster becomes a real possibility.

Point Loaning has been discontinued
I'm not exactly sure how this policy started, but the mods will no longer be transferring points between players. If you need points to play in a tournament, we will still give them to you. It's just too much of a hassle and completely undermines the point system.

eBooks and Christmas
So, as you may know, I'm a big proponent of eBooks. However, about half the gifts I'm giving this year are still traditional books. This is partly because a lot of people still don't have ereaders, but partly because giving ebooks seems wicked lame. In fact, for those I know have ereaders, I've avoided giving them books in either form.
