What is this? (Ancient Med map)
This is probably gonna sound stupid but, what is that L shaped, light blue thing on the Ancient Med map? It can't be just my PC since it appears on my laptop as well.

Edi Birsan End of Game Statement, please discuss:
I wanted to say thank you to all the players for this game and especially to Akroma who made it very interesting and entertaining for me. I think we all know that she had a won game here and elected not to take it. For me that is the sign of breaking through the status of a veteran into a higher field of play.

Why do people call Turkey the worst nation to be?
Why? Italy's WAY worse than Turkey to draw, if France goes all crazy and attack you from the start, good luck. If you try to lepanto, almost every Turkish player has seen that, and If you ally with Austria, they hardly ever trust you and as soon as you start dieing, they dive head first at you. Is there anybody here who actually LIKES to play Italy?

I heard a rumor
... that they're going to round up all the anarchists and tattoo "I'm a pretty pretty princess" on their forehead. Is it true? What do you think?

Oh, man, I really hope they do. Then Sic can take a new photo of himself and post it on deviantart for all the world to see. That would be too fucking hilarious!
I'd like to see them try.

Hell, I'd pay to see them tie up Sic and tattoo his forehead!

So Typical.

FS, are you an anarchist, or do you just have sympathies with the position (I am of the latter position)
Friendly Sword (636 D)
26 Jul 10 UTC
Well, I have anarchist sympathies, and will take an 'anarchist' position on certain issues, but I probably wouldn't say I am an anarchist. I don't think the complete destruction of the State is particularly achievable and I am willing to accede that it may have it's uses in a very limited number of roles.
mapleleaf (0 DX)
26 Jul 10 UTC
I've heard that the most effective way to combat the anarchists is to take away their squeegees, and not to put your garbage out until the last minute.

Take away their livelihoods, and starve them.
Draugnar (0 DX)
26 Jul 10 UTC
Nah... Just use 'em for target practice. Here in Kentucky we have the "he/she needed killing" defense. Anarchists, hippies, and tree huggers all automatically fall on that list. Hell, we even have a season for them, but we like to keep some around so we do set quotas and require permits to hunt them.
Sicarius (673 D)

I think there are anarchist who already have "I'm a pretty pretty princess" tattooed on their foreheads

On a more serious note, is Kentucky one of the State's that allows for the 'gay panic defense'?

Sometimes it isn't a joke. :(
stratagos (3269 D(S))
27 Jul 10 UTC
WTF is 'gay panic'? I thought he was going to touch me and I'd catch the gayness?
Friendly Sword (636 D)
27 Jul 10 UTC
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gay_panic_defense

A pseudoscientific (at the very not proven) notion that people who are extremely homophobic and extremely heterosexual go temporarily insane when a person of their sex acts in a sexual manner towards them.
(ie. A nice gay man touches your arm and asks you if you want to have a 'good night'.... you freak out, pull your sidearm, and shoot him dead)

It has been used to get a number of murderers free and declared innocent (or sentenced for involuntary manslaughter) after killing supposed homosexuals.

A notable failure of the defense was the trial of Matthew Shepard's murderers.
stratagos (3269 D(S))
27 Jul 10 UTC
That's just idiotic, but I don't blame the lawyers, I blame the juries
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
27 Jul 10 UTC
The "Gay Panic" defence is absolutely stupid. Homophobia is not a justification or defence for attacking gay people.
Friendly Sword (636 D)
27 Jul 10 UTC
Hey now, for such a defense to work, the whole system has to be in on it. Juries, lawyers, judges, the penal system, the laws, etc.

Interestingly, some States used to have provisions for killing anarchists or communists back in the 1800s. They were threatening their property and drove the landowner and his bully's to righteous passion, ya know?

Damn those Wobblies.
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
27 Jul 10 UTC
Communists? In the 1800's?
Friendly Sword (636 D)
27 Jul 10 UTC
Who do you think the KKK hated almost as much as Black people, and lynched almost as often? The late 1800s saw the advent of anti-capitalism in the US. (Fortunately, a lot of the socialists/communists/unionists were also black, so it made such things easier)

Obviously stuff got more heated and public in the 1920s, but that meant that killing people simply for being socialists and stirring up your workers was no longer nearly as easy or acceptable.
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
27 Jul 10 UTC
Ah, sorry, by "the 1800s" I thought you meant the decade known as the 1800s, ie the years 1801-1810 specifically. You actually meant the late 19th Century.
Friendly Sword (636 D)
27 Jul 10 UTC
Yeah thats right, sorry for the confusion. No such thing as a communist in 1805 Tenessee I'm afraid. ^^

At least they weren't called as such.
mapleleaf (0 DX)

The word "homophobia" is an outdated pejorative.

Anti-Gay is more accurate.

"(ie. A nice gay man touches your arm and asks you if you want to have a 'good night'.... you freak out, pull your sidearm, and shoot him dead)

Yet another good reason for banning the carrying of guns!
stratagos (3269 D(S))
27 Jul 10 UTC
If someone's going to go postal because someone tries to get in their pants, do you *really* think a lack of firearms is going to stop them?

Another way to think of it: if only the nice gay man was packing heat and could protect himself
Now, is homophobia defined as the hatred and fear of gay people or the hatred and fear of homsexuality in general?
mapleleaf (0 DX)
27 Jul 10 UTC
Homonegative is another, more accurate, alternative.

Homophobia does exist, of course, but not as the blanket catch-all term for anybody who disapproves of anything gay-related.

If I am heterosexual and certain of it, but fearful that OTHERS might think that I am gay, then I am homophobic.

Anti-gay, or homonegative, views based on principles (or disgust) are not homophobic. It is presumptuous, simplistic, and WRONG to assume another's motivation.
Okay, then I guess I'm homonegative. But I don't dislike gay people, I just dislike what they do.

And, to just place this on record, the Bible only mentions guy on guy as wrong, not girl on girl, so I don't dislike girl on girl. (In fact, I happen to like it.)

And yes, I'm a Christian anarchist.
Friendly Sword (636 D)
27 Jul 10 UTC
Yes mapleleaf, I am aware of the problematic uses of the term homophobia, but since the gay panic defense is defined as being so afraid of homosexual interaction that you go temporarily crazy, I thought is was the appropriate term to use.

I will go apologize to the gods of pedantry now if that will make you happy.

-----

Conservative Man, I acknowlege that you dislike male homosexuality, but you wouldn't stop gay people from interacting how they see fit, would you?

Also, Christian anarchist huh? What a strange combination. Do you ascribe to a particular form of institutionalized Christianity?
@Friendly: I might tell the gay men it's wrong to do what they're doing, but I wouldn't physically stop them.
And I go to Church by the way, Non-denominational right now, but in the future I might join the disciples of Christ Church, which stresses that you should have your own interpretation of scripture, and it was my interpretation of scripture that let me know that God supported Anarchy. "To seek rule from man is to reject rule from God" 1 Samuel 8.

How many CDs are enough?
Personally, I think two CDs within the first 2 years, or 2 or more later on when one of the CDs is, for example, the largest power on the board.

England should not open to the English Channel in gunboat
As France, considering I was thoroughly screwed because Germany and Italy moved unrelentingly against me, I decided to take England down with me. And this decision came totally because England opened to EC in gunboat.

I'm always looking for new music and I'm curious to know what you like. Musical tastes can tell a lot about a person I believe. So, post the name of the performer and the name of the song and try to include a video link so that we might hear it too. I'll start.

How to get more D's?
I am new to webdiplomacy, and I am playing quite a few games at the same time. The problem is that I do not feel that the games are moving fast enough, and I have only 1 D to play - meaning I am not able to join any more games.

Is there a way to borrow D's? Or even to play without D's?
