unpause please
fun game-3 got paused due to the banning of a member, and now 1 player who only has 1 SC left has still not unpaused, several days later. The player who was banned has already been eliminated from our game, so there is no rational reason for the pause, so can something be done about this?

Cfoss game threat
Just received this message from a Icthys who is playing Turkey in two games("The last patrol" and "Five Dollar Milkshake") I'm in. I asked why he moved against me in one and he replied:
"It is a waste. This is bargaining chip. Back-off me in the other game or I'll eliminate you from this one."
What do I do to get him removed?

How do you leave games?
When people backstab you on the first turn there is no fun so how can you just leave the game?

and one last thing...ive seen people who were stabbed by an "ally" within the first two turns who ended up winning the game or finishing with a nice showing
sean (3490 D(B))

so you dont have a stellar start, so what? think about the other 6 players and how they feel when someone just gives up coz it didnt go all your way. you leaving the game will advantage your neighbors and disadvantage those far away.

you fall off the horse you get back on, not call the waambulance(ive never heard of that term but i like it)

There is also the concept that you are not stabbed on the first turn, but just attacked...a concept that works sometimes and sometimes doesn;t. However the real issue is that if your definition of fun is ruined by someone attacking you or lying to you, then this game system is not for you.
You need to be able to enjoy the attempt at turning things around, dealing with hard to get along with people, balancing the urge for revenge with the gains of reconciliation or directed redemption etc.

prodigy, welcome to zero sum. Someone is always going to get the short straw, and you ruin the game if you leave right after you draw that short straw. Many measures are in place exactly because of people doing that. I've seen people at one SC hang on for years and then come back for the victory. At the very least you shouldn't let the person stab you take your centres without a fight.
Wait, so typing /giveup will put you into CD???

I love looking at my past games and laughing at some of the great stabs people pulled on me. They're more fun than looking at my own stabs, because I can actually remember my reaction. You gotta love the ones that grab more than two centers in one move...
Silent Noon (205 D)
16 Mar 09 UTC
How can you be stabbed in the FIRST turn? You can only call that an attack but not a stab, as a stab implies that there is cooperation beforehand.

By the way, you have no way to really "leave" the game, and I would not recommend you to attempt to do so - it is immoral and unfair to others, at the same time spoiling the fun.
Since you are only in 2 games and one is in 1906, I have to assume you mean this game:
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=9368

Frankly, you played it terrible. You gave up the easy 2 builds for France in year one, you made a mistake when trying to convoy yourself to Wales, and once Italy moved to Piedmont, any 'stab' should have been obvious to you.

You compounded that error in year 2 by moving to Mars in the Spring and moving out of it in the fall to attack Gascony (with support!), so that Mars stayed in Italian hands.

You don't quit like a 4 year old when you don't get the toy you want. You talk to England and Germany and Austria and see if you can make an alliance to go after Italy. And you learn the rules a little better.

I must agree that bashing is a bit mean but....I've only played 1 game and even I cringe when I see the moves in the above game.

And does Italy not know how to convoy? =/

Thanks Edibirson and DingleberryJones. CD is a necessary evil that is so overused. The best Diplomacy experience I can ever get is fighting for my life. I won't remember a lot of games I won. I will remember the game where, as England, I was double crossed twice over. I was down to 2 SCs, a fleet and a army. over many turns I was able to retake control of England and help an ally start to diminish the control by our enemy of our area. We lost, but I learned a lot and had a personal best. When you walk away - you are throwing away a learning experience. You definitely earn the respect of experienced players - you will run into these folks in other games and will be remembered.
WhiteSammy,
I think that maybe you should read my post again. Never did I call him an idiot (though your post in effect calls him one). I did make suggestions (talking to other coutries and learning the rules).

He played it terrible. There's no way to sugarcoat that, and it SHOULD be pointed out. It should be pointed out that even if Italy 'stabbed' him, had he played it better, he wouldn't have been in bad state.

And he obviously needs to learn the rules better. He needs to know that holding SCs in the fall is important, he needs to learn how to do convoys properly.

And frankly, it SHOULD be pointed out that quitting is the response of a 4 year old. A mature player wouldn't look to quit after 1 year.
Pointing out the poor moves in his play is an opportunity for him to learn. Its the same reason coaches show the tape of a game to his players, and says 'stop the tape'. Mr Wide Receiver, why are you there? Why did you do that? Do you know what you should have done?

Bashing is 'You fuckin idiot, don't you know how to fucking convoy? Why didn't you hold Mars in the fall you idiot?' I did not do that.
WhiteSammy (132 D)
16 Mar 09 UTC
i never said that you called him an idiot i was just saying that you could have phrased it a little nicer and i used the idiot reference as an example
WhiteSammy (132 D)
16 Mar 09 UTC
...and also my past posts only talked about his ability to persever
MatGB (100 D)

I agree with the Dingle, and think his approach and suggestions are spot on.

France is in no way out of that game, even now, but is in trouble. Making peace with England and recruiting an ally would be viable, Italy's position is strategically weak (although still better than France's).

Disband the Welsh fleet that is effectively useless, and concentrate on dealing with Italy.
WhiteSammy, forgive me then for misreading your posts which immediately followed mine. When your 2 consecutive posts say "come on dingle dont start bashing his playing he has only played 2 games. Make suggestions not critiques(at least not demeaning ones)." and "calling someone an idiot doesnt teach them anything", I have to assume they are both addresssed to me. Since you are the only one who had used the word idiot at that point, I think it was a logical conclusion on my part to assume you were accusing me of calling him an idiot.

Again, I did make suggestions and was not demeaning.

Hate to repeat myself but got to read the rules prodigy!
(no, don't bump the otherday's post again ;))
And, giving up in the first year (or any year) is terrible. In this game we may wish for it but we should never do it.

By the way, that move to gascony from marseille, supported, was very bad, even worst after you made a post asking how you keep SC's on friday.

It seems I always do worse in games where I make an attempt to have actual communication and send messages with some meat in them. It's starting to look like other players only really respond to sound bites, and one or two sentence messages. Any thoughts?
