unpause please
fun game-3 got paused due to the banning of a member, and now 1 player who only has 1 SC left has still not unpaused, several days later. The player who was banned has already been eliminated from our game, so there is no rational reason for the pause, so can something be done about this?

Cfoss game threat
Just received this message from a Icthys who is playing Turkey in two games("The last patrol" and "Five Dollar Milkshake") I'm in. I asked why he moved against me in one and he replied:
"It is a waste. This is bargaining chip. Back-off me in the other game or I'll eliminate you from this one."
What do I do to get him removed?

Political Survey
seems lately we have had a rash of self promotion threads by forum junkies. So let's bring politics back into the mix!
take this survey and post your scores.
evaluates your progressive/liberal/ conservative opinions to a variety of questions.

260 progressive, but I didn't like the phrasing of many of the questions.
255 very progressive

crsip, yes some of the questions were pretty loaded and leading. about 2 thirds slanted to to the left and one third to the right.
thejoeman (100 D)

agreed, but im 266, very progressive

i didn't like the questions either.
Centurian (3257 D)

Well its on a left leaning website so thats not surprising
Thucydides (864 D(B))
15 Mar 09 UTC
huh... I got a 244. Same as your Darwyn. That's pretty high... I don't think the questions they ask led to an accurate representation of me it would probably be lower in reality. I'm more of an authoritarian than a progressive... but I am progressive too. I don't know.
It's kinda like the World's Smallest Political Quiz, which is designed to make everyone look like a Libertarian.
I think it's kind of hard to tell what number to choose. I took one that has only 4, and it's 6 pages of questions.

www.politicalcompass.org

I'm bottom-left, right above Gandhi on the one chart.
Invictus (240 D)
15 Mar 09 UTC
141. I thought the questions were fine.
Chrispminis (916 D)
15 Mar 09 UTC
Well, I'm probably more fiscally conservative, but more socially liberal in the aspects that aren't contradictory.
Invictus (240 D)
15 Mar 09 UTC
The system is flawed in that I'm lower than "conservatives" even though I put a 6 for the gay marriage question. I guess the 10 on government being better at making jobs tilted it.

The questions were fair, but they weren't organized properly. I don't really belong in the eighteenth century like my score would suggest.
Invictus (240 D)
15 Mar 09 UTC
10 on government NOT being better at making jobs tilted it.
246 - but I'm a Brit.
PoliticalCompass is good, but I think it works better if you compare your PoliticalCompass score to your score from www.moral-politics.com. The two together give a much better picture of your political reasoning and philosophy.

I liked the political compass questions more. I feel that my Moral Rules score was undermined by the fact that while I believe in the good of society over the good of the individual I also believe that individuals seeking their own good is often the most efficient way of attaining social good.
Toby Bartels (361 D)
15 Mar 09 UTC
I like Moral Rules' theory, but I don't like their test.
Sicarius (673 D)
15 Mar 09 UTC
277, but I also do not like the questions. some are loaded or strangley worded, and also make assumptions that not everyone agrees with.

yes or no, have you ever taken aspirin... or PCP?
See, my problem is that I'm an idealist. I know what I want, but I know if I do this for people, then it'd have a negative effect on society. Sure, everybody could get the same health care, but where's the money for it?

Is the moral compass survey skewed left or is the world a lot more open minded and compassionate than i thought? looking at the country charts i was quite surprised how heavy the representation on the upper left was, easily the largest grouping, with the lower left second and the conservative lower right coming in a pretty poor third place, happily the insane upper right nazi block is quite underpopulated.
Invictus (240 D)
16 Mar 09 UTC
I guess it's a good thing the insane upper left commie block is overpopulated then.
Chrispminis (916 D)
16 Mar 09 UTC
sean, most of the developed world is far to the left of the United States. The Democratic Party is to the right of the Conservative party here in Canada, and many European countries are definitely even farther left than Canadian parties.
Chrispminis (916 D)
16 Mar 09 UTC
sean, correct me if I'm wrong but you're from Australia? At least that's the idea I have in my head. Australia is a little right of Canada in terms of the political spectrum I believe. I just think you've discounted socialist Europe in your estimation.
WA-Kusiag (120 D)
16 Mar 09 UTC
OK, I feel the need to say something about this site: http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/2009/03/progressive_quiz.html
1. The test is biased.
2. The test itself isn't scientifically sound.
3. The test's wording is suggestive.
4. The test speaks sometimes in broad generalizing statements.
5. The test lacks the ability to disagree or renounce a question.
6. The test deals in definitive statements which are subjective and unnecessary.
*Consider this a heads-up before anyone takes this test.
sean (3490 D(B))
16 Mar 09 UTC
yes that's right crisp. I looked at the country results and while of course Europeans were generally upper left on the chart i was surprised that Australia and the UK were too. Even the Americans were to the left although they did have a higher percentage in the lower left "libertarian" sector, products of a large wide spaced former rough frontier nation settled by religious exiles i guess.
Centurian (3257 D)
16 Mar 09 UTC
What Chrispminis said, but I'd like to add that often the insane neo-cons aren't as interested in politics and don't take the tests, I don't want to say because they are stupid (but one might say that).

Those right-wingers that do take an active interest often have a much better grasp of more rational right wing views, like an emphasis on smaller government or personal freedoms.

Look at this sites population for example. Compare conservatives: Diplomat (not intelligent) vs Invictus (intelligent) but you may notice that Invictus is more on the Libertarian side rather than just being a stubborn bigot.
sean (3490 D(B))
16 Mar 09 UTC
yes, i see diplomat as basically someone who would fall for fascism if it was wrapped up prettily the stars and stripes while invictus has a healthy skepticism about any governments ability to solve society's ills.
spyman (424 D(G))
16 Mar 09 UTC
I scored 276, whatever that means (apparently it makes me very progressive).
Chrispminis (916 D)
16 Mar 09 UTC
http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/jonathan_haidt_on_the_moral_mind.html

Here's a guy who claims to know the roots of liberalism and conservatism. I'm skeptical that it can be simplified like that but maybe some of you will find something in there for you.
