Live Games - process delay
I've recently played a live game for the first time in a few months, and I'm finding that the timer counts down to "Now", but then it actually takes 30-40 seconds to process the orders. This means people are able to enter or change orders *after* the phase should have ended.

Political Views
The campaigns of Clinton and Trump have been running for a little over a year now and political tensions have been running high in the United States. As someone who's relatively new to this site, I couldn't help but wonder whether webdiplomacy players tend to be more liberal or conservative.

Some studies suggest people who are more informed tend to hold more extreme political views. If that's the case, webdip players must be very well-informed.

Most people on this website are cultural marxists, social democrats, hardcore marxists, or to the left of center. I am one of the few center right people on this website.

Trump and Clinton do not by themselves encompass the range of political views held within this WebDiplomacy community, or the American nation. I suspect we have our "silent majority" ( combining both well and ill informed ). It would be a mistake to assume that an interest in the diplomacy game implies an interest in real politics ( or realpolitik ), although the assumption might appear to have an intuitive "logic".
Perhaps there's a vocal minority here, just as there is in the " outside world"

The forum used to have a lot of very diverse (and extreme) viewpoints, the averaging of which probably resulted in something pretty close to the dead center of the Nolan Chart. Unfortunately, over the last couple years, the mods' desire to purge the site/forum of undesirables (in the name of making it less intimidating, or something like that) resulted in several longtime forumites being banned and resulted in a noticeable (but not extreme - at least, not by my standards) shift down and to the left on said chart.

I'm a centre right British Conservative, which in US terms makes me a swing voter with Democratic leanings.

There used to be some exceptionally good political discussions on this forum, but that pretty much died after the changes. All you seem to get these days is the occasional idiotic left wing rant, like that pile of horse manure brainbomb has dumped on us recently, or a post by orathaic that's so fair removed from mainstream political thought it takes an hour to work out what it's actually about.

Best to ignore politics here. Rather sadly I've yet to find anywhere as good as it used to be.

I disagree with the view that a forum with more decorum is devoid of, or has much less political debate and discussion, or that a shift to the left has occurred as a result.
I used to frequently clash with he who has an interesting player name at VDiplomacy and others, including the "God botherers" and engage in extremely robust exchanges, but I fortuitously decided to have a complete break from the site for about two years...during which time the crisis apparently peaked and was resolved.

But to suggest that all "debate and discussion" is now completely sanitised, dull and impotent is, I think incorrect, bit it seems like a few critics like to push that line

Ah, the Purge. I remember it well. It was just after I first started posting on the forum. Moment of silence for the fallen.

I've heard about this "Purge" a lot. So the mods just kicked out people they didn't like? Unless a person is cheating or being extremely, and I mean EXTREMELY rude and offensive, why kick them out?? That's kinda bullshit. Am I gonna get kicked for saying that? What's the things we're not supposed to say?
orathaic (1009 D(B))

The forum went from a laize fair attitude on the forum (no moderation at all, allow players to mute and otherwise self-police) To a hands on approach.

The aim was to make this a more comfortable place for the silent majority of players who ignored the forums entirely. And new players who just happened to stop by.

Whether it was a success or not is difficult to judge. But while i regret what i lost, i support the mod team in their decision.

People were being extremely, and I mean EXTREMELY rude and offensive. After warnings. It used to be tolerated. The moderation team of the time (of which I was not part, I might add) decided it was driving too many people away; so they brought in some control. Some accepted it; some didn't. Those who didn't crossed the line, and most of them got banned and/or permanently silenced over a period of a couple of months.

Nobody gets banned without warning for forum behaviour.

I remember the old forum. Part of why I never was part of it. I played my gunboats and had no interest engaging with those scumbags.

Interesting to note, I once looked back to see when the Great Flame War of 2014 started, and the event that started that dark and tense era of the forum was krellin being silenced. All those complaints and behavior seen irredeemable enough to warrant a ban for someone who came to understand that his forum conduct was actually, well not great to say the least. People don't get bans for opinions. People get banned for acting horribly to other users or any other egregious conduct. Like mapleleaf, who was banned for being condescending and constantly harassing American users by laughing at the casualties of school shootings.

Not at all, brainbomb. I am fully supportive of you being able to launch a diatribe about whatever unsubstantiated nonsense you feel like. Very much a latter day scumbag, if you like. But I deeply regret that it's the best the site seems to do these days.

It is unfortunate that things escalated to the point that they did, and I confess that I am mystified how webDip was unable to resolve matters to a satisfactory level as vDip largely managed. Still, all ancient history and trying to turn clocks back is rarely a successful strategy.

Game Titles
As I peruse other people's games, I've often been amused by game titles. It's a shame we can't see who the clever title authors are. It may not be wise during the game, but it would be cool if it were displayed after the game was over.

New Online Diplomacy Podcast!
Some friends of mine from vDip - The Ambassador and Kaner406 - have started up a Diplomacy Podcast focused on the online scene. You can find it here: http://diplomacygames.com/

It's also on iTunes, Overtune and Stitcher (search 'Diplomacy Games'), and should be on Google Play but hasn't appeared there yet for some reason.
