Search and Destroy - Take 2
Basically, the game was an abysmal failure. Would we like to try again with a better version?

The biggest problem was that we found the target way too fast. I propose the following changes:
1) Target is assigned by outside source.
2) No one is informed on who target is besides target.
3) A thread is made for the outside source to comment each phase or year about whether or not the target has been destroyed.
4) May or may not be non-anon. If anon, the target will have to be able to PM the outside source about their identity.

I think that might make it too hard. What about increasing the "search" time in the game- something like:

The game is anon, public press. Each build phase, all players are shuffled, except for the target. No non-target plays the same country twice in a row (though players might come back to the same country later). Players are forbidden from saying who they are. (Or otherwise encoding who they are). Public press helps the confusion between players- everyone has the same information. As before, target's goal is to get a survive, while the other player's goal is to eliminate the target.

It could be interesting to not announce the targets death until after the game is over- so you have to be sure you've eliminated the target. Not sure about that rule, though.

If you guys want to go with this idea, I'd be happy to do the shuffles and target assignment for you.
Yoyoyozo (65 D)

that sounds freaking awesome!
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)

Of course, players can't say which countries they've played so far, either. And it would have to be forbidden to use the notes tab to communicate.
TrPrado (461 D)
26 Dec 14 UTC
That sounds very interesting.

I'd be interested in playing ATC's version.
Blue Baboon (755 D)
26 Dec 14 UTC
ATC's version have the problem of each player that isn't the target can rule out the countries one year at the time. Every year the player will know a new ally and therefor one less possible target. The new ally will know another new ally and so on.

Even if the players don't say who they played before (which doesn't matter because the target can lie), this will soon stop fighting between countries that normally is enemies and it will be clear who the target is.
KingCyrus (511 D)
26 Dec 14 UTC
I still think that the seekers should be informed when the target is killed.
Yoyoyozo (65 D)
26 Dec 14 UTC
Maybe we can make it a timed thing. Like we trade every 2 years instead of 1.p and we have to eliminate the target within 10 years? These are very arbitrary numbers so if anyone has a better idea as to how long we should have feel free to say something.
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
26 Dec 14 UTC
Blue Baboon makes a good point. One solution would be to time limit the game (1910?). That would encourage early fireworks, too.

I'm not really sure this game will work - but I do think we could get 7 players who'd like to find out.
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)

How about instead of only having one target, every player has their own target? No country can be the target of more than 3 players, so there are at absolute minimum 3 targets and more likely 4 or 5 in the game. You have to persuade other people you have the same target, but also hide who your own is.

The winner is the first person to have their target defeated. If 2-3 people do it simultaneously, they tie.
TrPrado (461 D)
26 Dec 14 UTC
Beautiful suggestions, guys. Maybe one of each to test the waters?
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)
26 Dec 14 UTC
Ok, so let's try:

Anon, public press, countries shuffle randomly every year (except for the target). No discussion of who you are, or who you've been. No use of the Notes tab. Game ends (by cancel to avoid affecting ratings) in 1910. If target is still alive, target wins. If target is killed at any point, everyone else wins immediately and the game ends.

I'll happily TD and do the shuffles.

Players:

1. TrPrado
2. Yoyoyozo
3. mendax
4. KingCyrus?
5. Blue Baboon?
6. ?
7. ?

Should the target get the choice of the country they play?
A_Tin_Can (2234 D)

I really like HR's suggestion, too.

Oh yeah, just remembered that I meant to post more specific reasons as to why the game didn't work out very well. JamesYanik volunteered to be our target, and it was rather easy to find him because:
1) he has very distinctive press. People were saying things about how they could easily see Yanik saying a lot of the things his country was saying.
2) People started checking outside resources to eliminate people. We deduced pretty soon which country KingCyrus was because of his online status timestamps and lack of press early on. That country was soon eliminated from being Yanik. From there, we used a similar tactic (except with Yanik's online status) to narrow all the way down between two countries. That all occurred in the first year, so we decided the game needed serious tweaking, hence the existence of this thread.
I don't know if that will have any serious effects on any of your ideas, I just meant to mention those earlier but didn't get around to it.

This sounds absolutely ridiculous.

I'm 100% in.
TheReinvented (1360 D)
26 Dec 14 UTC
Aw comeon you know I'm in this. Don't try to leave me out. Some questions, couldn't someone deduce the target by not drawing the country? And what happens if a country is eliminated, would someone get stuck as them?
JamesYanik (548 D)
26 Dec 14 UTC
Example of 1 target per person system:
France targets Germany
Germany targets England
Eng;and targets Russia
Russia targets Austria
Austria targets Turkey
Turkey targets Italy
Italy targets France
(this is only one possible scenario of a 1:1 system, maybe have it where each country has two targets)
we would have to discourage going after countries who are neither attacking you nor your target. And keep the official targets a secret; people can lie and deceive about whom their real target are in the game though.

Once one person has 100% eliminated their target, we draw and that person is crowned 'champion' in our forum. Then we can o\put his/her/neuter/hermaphrodite title to the test in another game. It must be public though because whoever this outside '8th person' is he needs to be able to assign us our targets by PM.
LeinadT (146 D)
26 Dec 14 UTC
The discouragement is simple: if you go after another country, you're actually helping another country more than yourself.

Is Coffee for Closers?
For those of you unfamiliar, the statement comes from a scene in Glengary Glen Ross: http://tinyurl.com/bkyyzlb . Basically it's about how if you want to do something, do it, and about not feeling entitled. I also recently read an article on Cracked which I will link here: http://bit.ly/1epy3r8 . So, how do you guys feel about the message of the speech and the article? Agree? Disagree? Kittens over Mittens? Please discuss.

Race and Ethnicity
Recently, I have been filling out lots of forms. During this process, I have discovered a rather disturbing fact. Apparently, I do not have an ethnicity, nor even a race sometimes. In these forms many ethnicities are listed, from Aleut to Vietnamese. But while many small islands or island groups are present, I can't find Eastern European, or even Caucasian! Why is it that these are not considered of equal value to list as Samoan, or Guamanian?

A Thing - 2nd Edition
Hi again!

Domino's Pizza here in Japan is incredibly expensive. A single large pizza from Domino's is nearly 4,000 yen, which is about $35 in the US. Japan has very few obese people. Japan has almost zero instances of bloating before bedtime. I have only seen one person the size of a sumo wrestler (my dad) since arriving in a city of 30 million people. Coincidence, right?
