The webDiplomacy points ruleset is almost perfect, but...
No one should be rewarded for a game that fails to produce a victor. Everyone who bought into a drawn game and didn't leave should receive an even split of the pot. Otherwise you facilitate awful situations like " just kill Austria, then draw" or more intricate draw pacts, which favor anyone who lucked into a difficult-to-kill nation like France.

So I know this was mentioned almost a week ago, but I can't find the original thread. We're still waiting on the last player to join this game with less than 24 hours on the clock. Apparently they wanted to join so that it would start on Friday night, well Friday night has been and gone and the game has yet to start...

Meta Gaming
I got a message from a mod accusing me of meta gaming (even though I have never done so), with a warning that I would be punished if I do not respond in three days. I responded almost immediately, but two days later, still have not yet heard back from the mod. Am I at risk of having my account banned while I wait for the mod to respond? I am at a critical juncture in multiple games right now, so that would be really bad. Thanks to anyone who responds.

Confused about defaulting to defend
I'm new to this, and am curious-- under what circumstances does a unit that is programmed to move, support hold, or support move NOT do what it's programmed to do, but rather revert to defending itself?

Help please?

I always assume all players are guys, but I wonder if I should. Are there any females on this site? I get the impression there isn't.

I actually played a game a while back (last month?) where I found out right before I killed this person that they were a female. Obviously they were trying to use their gender to help them stay alive.

It worked. We ended up including her in a draw.

To be fair, "if you support me into Munich I'll show you my boobs" would probably work on quite a lot of players on this site.

Which, like ATC says, is probably also why most females don't reveal themselves.

Haha. And the rest of the thread just reinforces ATC's point.

This is a problem though - the gender ratio. Its been acknowledged before that this website (like much of the internet) is somewhat of a hostile space for women almost. And thats where the conversation stops..as if it is OK. If we all recognise an obvious problem, we should discuss how to solve that problem. Not be fine with it.

There are plenty of very good female diplomacy players that I know. In fact, I was introduced to Diplomacy through two very good female friends of mine who spent a hell of a lot of time explaining the game to me and then eventually making me fall in love with the game.

The fact that we are potentially missing out on half of the diplomacy community is....ridiculous. Think about it - our numbers could literally *double* if this were a female friendly space. Double the number of good players, double the competition, double the people willing to contribute to make the site better.
Making the webdip community a female friendly space should be part of the medium term vision of the mods and the rest of the community. And there should be active discussion to figure out the best path towards that.

I'm all for equal opportunities for men and women but equal opportunities do not equate to equal outcomes. We are a sexual dimorphic species, men and women on average make different choices and so not every community is going to have a 50/50 gender ratio.

Women on average are just not even nearly as fond of Diplomacy as men. That's why there are so few women here. It has nothing to do with a lack of friendliness towards females as some of you white knight social justice warriors believe. Saying that women are such scared fragile creatures that they need help to even just be able to sign on to this website is maliciously sexist in its sick assumption of female weakness.

It is the same disgusting sexism that apparently drives some people to include someone in a draw they didn't deserve to be in, just because they have a vagina. If you would have any real respect for women playing this game you would stab and eliminate them the same as you do men and not treat them like five year olds that might go cry over losing a game.

@Sh@dow
"This is a problem though - the gender ratio."

No, unless you consider free choice a problem, the gender ratio is not a problem. For how would you "solve" it? By banning a lot of men who do want to play? By forcing women to play when they don't even want to?

"Its been acknowledged before that this website (like much of the internet) is somewhat of a hostile space for women almost."

A hostile space for women like much of the internet? Get your facts straight dude. Men are more likely to be harassed on the internet than women. This according to PEW:

"Online men are more likely to experience at least one of the six types of harassment we queried – 44% have had some sort of harassment experience compared with 37% of online women." (http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2014/10/30/5-facts-about-online-harassment/)

"The fact that we are potentially missing out on half of the diplomacy community is....ridiculous."

No, what is ridiculous is the baseless assumption that half of the diplomacy community are women. What's next? Half of the fishing community are women? Half of the jewelry making community are men? I suggest you step out of your fantasy world and into the real one.

@misogynisticass/ignorantfool_scarjd74

Your worldview is so ill-informed and narrow minded, that I pity you.
1) Quite obviously every community can’t have a 50-50 ratio. Nor did I ever imply that. If you think I implied that, I’d request you to take a basic logic class or buy yourself a dictionary and start learning English.
I have played face to face Diplomacy with several players (in university campuses in both North America and Asia – so quite varied environments) and there is a roughly 60-40 sex ratio that I experienced. What is indisputable is that the ridiculous sex ratio on this site is nowhere close to the expected average – it is partly because the website does not try to be a female friendly environment – if that can be corrected to achieve a favourable outcome, it should.
2) “Not unless you consider free choice a problem, the gender ratio is not a problem.”
Hahaha. Understand that not everything in the world is a simple outcome of free choice. The under-representation of women in thousands of different spheres of life is not always because of their ‘choice’ – it is because of the structural and systemic constraints that inhibit their entry – constraints that are almost always put in place by men.
3) How would I solve it? Of-course, solutions would have to be discussed and implemented after careful thinking. But simple steps that immediately spring to mind are:
a. Having mods reach out to female players on the site – both present and old – and asking them about their experiences – what constraints they faced, why they quit the site, their opinions on how the site can attract more female players
b. Ask both men and women to reach out to their female players who play F2F Diplomacy and encourage them to join the site or atleast check it out
c. Have strong sexual harassment rules on the website etc.
4) “The fact that we are potentially missing out on half the diplomacy community is ridiculous”
This statement still stands. Not the use of the word ‘potentially’. Obviously I have no clue what the sex ratio would normally be for diplomacy. Hell, it could be higher than 50-50 also. It could be lower than half also. Which is why I said ‘potentially.’ The point is that we are *definitely* missing out on a significant section of the potential diplomacy community.
