For those who are knew, the School of War (SOW) is a series of games in which students play with the assistance of a private TA to guide them and answer questions about the game. There is also a Professor who offers public commentary in the Forum and answers questions that the community-at-large may have.

If we have enough students, we'll also create a Study Group, which lacks official TAs or Professors, but will contain some more experienced players who are interested in helping students learn the game.

Tentative Roster as well as positions that need to be filled:

SOW Students:
Code Bomb (EIG)
LeonWalras (EFG)
Benjamin Franklin
Mountstuart

For the record, Mello As Hello and Code Bomb (and myself) know each other in real life. To prevent the possibility of unfair metagaming, I highly recommend Code playing a Western nation and Mello playing an Eastern or vice versa, or having Mello sit this one out and joining the next go-around.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

Alright, that should be fine. I'll hold you responsible if either of them CDs, Tru : )
Code Bomb (100 D)
21 Oct 14 UTC
So if I do something bad, Tru gets in trouble... Interesting ;)

But in all seriousness, you needn't worry about either of us. But if you feel that it's best for us to be separated, or to not be in the same game, I completely understand.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
21 Oct 14 UTC
No, I don't foresee it being a problem.

I'd be interested in being a student. No country preference.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
21 Oct 14 UTC
OK, so let's see.

Phil, ALEX, and Valis have requested the last SOW spot in that order. Can you each please confirm if you'd like to play in SOW or Study Group? I feel you are all a bit on the more experienced end, but I'm happy to have one of you play, if you wish.
Valis2501 (2850 D(G))
21 Oct 14 UTC
Can you elaborate on how the Study Group works? And I'll hereby abdicate my volunteering for the SOW.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
21 Oct 14 UTC
Basically, it's just students that didn't get into SOW because there wasn't enough room.

I'll fill it with a few experienced players that can help to balance the board and give some solid EOGs. The Professors will also give EOGs for the study group, but it won't be as detailed.
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))

I would even be willing to throw in some Q & A for the study group. Posing thought-provoking questions aimed at making you surmising how alternatives could have worked out. Maybe even grading responses or something. Just understand it would be on a semi-regular basis, like once per game year or any time I see how a different set of moves would have garnered different positive opportunities.
KingCyrus (511 D)
21 Oct 14 UTC
Why not put one of the two who know each other in study group?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
21 Oct 14 UTC
I guess I don't see why it would matter that they know each other. It's not like they're going to cheat with some of the best players on the site analyzing their moves.

Emfries has volunteered to play in the Study Group! Thanks!

uclabb has also volunteered to be an adjunct prof, which will be great, but it's starting to turn into a community college. We need at least 1 full prof willing to stick with the SOW all the way through to create a unified narrative of the game.

I will TA. I am fine with any country although Italy is my weakest.

I also think the studygroup had a professor the last time. So basically mid level players with a professor commentary. Last time the study group was a great game

I also think its awesome that Tin Can has gone from SOW student to TA. The SOW game he was involved in was great.

ISIL using chlorine gas?
http://america.aljazeera.com/articles/2014/10/24/iraq-isil-chlorine.html

What do you guys think? Is chlorine gas too archaic and ineffective to care about, or is the use of chlorine gas by ISIL significant/pertinent to the issue?

Yo. I've been semi-retired for a while now, but I wanna play some games. One will be strictly highest GR, and the second will be anyone, witH preference to people who seem fun. Both will be semi-anon, WTA, full press. 36 or 48 hours, full press, so state your preference in the signups.

NFL Pick 'em Week 8: Arriving at the Midway Point...
And so we come to mid-season, with the Cowboys, Chargers, Cardinals and Broncos riding high, the Saints and Bears both plummeting to earth, and a bunch of teams stuck in the middle. We kick off the week tonight with a Thursday match which should actually be good for a change, the Chargers and Broncos in a clash for the lead in the AFC West. The Lions and Falcons play in London, Bengals/Ravens, Panthers/Seahawks...pick 'em!

New players take heed: Sometimes is is advantageous to disband dislodged units in Autumn. You can rebuild them where they may be more useful. This is particularly useful in the Modern Diplomacy map where all SCs are considered home SCs.

Picking order or purely random
I was wondering if there is a mechanism, by which players are selected for certain powers. I got 4x times Turkey and 3x times Austria and i joined the game 3rd to last. I am also new here and there are other players who had less points when they joined. An explanation would be helpful, because Í do not believe in bad luck here.
