ISIL using chlorine gas?
http://america.aljazeera.com/articles/2014/10/24/iraq-isil-chlorine.html

What do you guys think? Is chlorine gas too archaic and ineffective to care about, or is the use of chlorine gas by ISIL significant/pertinent to the issue?

The London...Whats? An NFL Team for London Town?
http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/american-football/29728155 " Chancellor George Osborne says the UK government will support plans for a London-based NFL team"
For all I know, Osborne could be blowing smoke...but even if it didn't (doesn't) happen--suggestions, real or for fun, for a London NFL team name? :p

Yo. I've been semi-retired for a while now, but I wanna play some games. One will be strictly highest GR, and the second will be anyone, witH preference to people who seem fun. Both will be semi-anon, WTA, full press. 36 or 48 hours, full press, so state your preference in the signups.

NFL Pick 'em Week 8: Arriving at the Midway Point...
And so we come to mid-season, with the Cowboys, Chargers, Cardinals and Broncos riding high, the Saints and Bears both plummeting to earth, and a bunch of teams stuck in the middle. We kick off the week tonight with a Thursday match which should actually be good for a change, the Chargers and Broncos in a clash for the lead in the AFC West. The Lions and Falcons play in London, Bengals/Ravens, Panthers/Seahawks...pick 'em!

Autumn Disbands, Fast Retreats
New players take heed: Sometimes is is advantageous to disband dislodged units in Autumn. You can rebuild them where they may be more useful. This is particularly useful in the Modern Diplomacy map where all SCs are considered home SCs.

Math question
Suppose we could remove the 143million tonnes of lasted from the oceans. What would that do to the sea level? I imagine its small but how small?

tonnes are wrong measure. Cause a ton of lead is much smaller than a ton of plastic (and both things can count as waste, I suppose)
Jeff Kuta (2066 D)

~326,000,000,000,000,000,000 gallons of water in the oceans.
~3.26 x 10^20 gallons of water
1 ton / ~240 gallons
So ocean weighs ~1.36 x 10^18 tons.
Divide into 143 million tonnes (1.43 x 10^8). That's somewhere in the neighborhood of 1.0 x 10^-10, or 0.00000001%. Pretty small.

However, it probably matters where the waste is located. It is not concentrated equally, nor are human populations.
principians (881 D)
19 Oct 14 UTC
also if you consider *waste* that floats, the effect of taking it out from sea is exactly as the effect of artic ice melting: none at all

Yeah but who would throw away a tonne of lead? Plus lead would sink. Lead is weird.
principians (881 D)
19 Oct 14 UTC
if they have found cars inside drain network, why not a ton of lead in the sea?
phil_a_s (0 DX)

Essentially, everything in the ocean except water is negligible. There's an xkcd What if? that touches on the issue that I can't be bothered to find. Something about ships and fish, and how removing them reverses exactly as much as 8 hours adds.

Jeff Kute - thanks but does the Blume of the seas matter? If I put a brick in my bath the water level rises by the same amount regardless if my bath is 6in deep or 18in deep. Should the calc have more to do with surface area of the seas? I don't know the answer, so still looking for help.

Pretty sure tonnes is right measure. A tonne of lego displaces the same amount of water as a tonne of lead.

Kasimax - thx for the link, that tells me everything I needed to know.

@maniac: "A tonne of lego displaces the same amount of water as a tonne of lead." no it doesn't. just imagine a lego brick which weighs a tonne. this brick displaces much less water than a ton of lego bricks.
Hmm, while you guys are at it answering math questions, want to help me with the proof of the real numbers from a set of cauchy sequences?
TigerBlood (100 D)
20 Oct 14 UTC
Kasimax is right. It's not mass being displaced - it's volume. The matter is complicated by buoyancy being linked to mass via density. Essentially total mass does not matter, as long as the trash has density equal or greater to water an equal volume of water will be displaced.

If you are not convinced do an experiment. But I assure you: dropping a lead ball into your bathtub will not flood the apartment.
TigerBlood (100 D)
20 Oct 14 UTC
Although it would be kind of cool. If it did.
Octavious (2701 D)
20 Oct 14 UTC
Even cooler if you open a lead mine on the sea floor and make sea levels drop an inch or two.

As an extension to this question, what impact does the sediment dumped into the sea each year by all the world's rivers have on sea levels?
phil_a_s (0 DX)
20 Oct 14 UTC
I'd expect little to none, since most of the sediment seems to be dumped along the way, particularly in the delta areas, and wherever you have anything to catch it. Also, not that many rivers, while the ocean is massive. After all, rivers account for about 1/100 of the water supply of the planet, while oceans are 97/100, so the amount of sediment carried in by rivers can't really be that large. It would be nice to get concrete data though.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))

It seems to me we've just justified pumping all waste products into the ocean.

Well played!
mendax (321 D)

The problem with waste in the sea is not sea levels rising.
Jamiet99uk (808 D)

@ Tigerblood: "But I assure you: dropping a lead ball into your bathtub will not flood the apartment."

It would if you dropped it from high enough to smash a hole in the bathtub.
So, I take it nobody wants to help me on my real analysis question? Sigh :(
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
20 Oct 14 UTC
@ goldfingle: I'd just LOVE to help you but I know a limited amount about real numbers. I wouldn't be much help.
VirtualBob (209 D)
20 Oct 14 UTC
@Jamie ... wrong. Dropping the lead ball from high enough to smash a hole in the bathtub will flood the downstairs neighbor's apartment ... not yours.
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
20 Oct 14 UTC
I'm going to subject that to a practical experiment.

Back soon.
phil_a_s (0 DX)
20 Oct 14 UTC
Actually, this depends on the style of bathtub, doesn't it? You'll probably flood the downstairs neighbor anyway, obviously, but if it's a tub not lodged in the floor, you'll probably flood yourself first.
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
20 Oct 14 UTC

I have concluded the experiment.

Unfortunately, there was a problem. I realised that I do not live in an apartment.

What I have demonstrated is that if you drop a lead ball into the bath from a sufficient height, you do indeed flood the floor below the bathroom. For me, alas, that's also part of my own house.
semck83 (229 D(B))
20 Oct 14 UTC
goldfinger, I can possibly help. What precisely is the problem, now?
phil_a_s (0 DX)
20 Oct 14 UTC
@Jamie
What height is actually sufficient? How does the volume of the bath affect the necessary height? In what ways are the dimensions of the ball relevant? Can this effect be repeated with balls of any solid-state metal? Non-metallic balls?
Jamiet99uk (808 D)
20 Oct 14 UTC
I only had one bathtub.

Picking order or purely random
I was wondering if there is a mechanism, by which players are selected for certain powers. I got 4x times Turkey and 3x times Austria and i joined the game 3rd to last. I am also new here and there are other players who had less points when they joined. An explanation would be helpful, because Í do not believe in bad luck here.

Of Wars and War Crimes
http://news.yahoo.com/exhibition-of-syria-torture-photos-shows--depravity--of-assad-regime-220711714.html With all the talk concerning whether Israel and/or Hamas should/will face war crimes (I think there's a case to be made both Netanyahu AND Hamas leadership should face charges), we have here what's being called the "smoking gun" for Assad's actions. But does the threat of a warm crimes charge really mean anything? If not, how can it be made to "mean" more?
