How does one ask a raise without sounding greedy?
This year I'm much more busy than last year so I kind of don't consider it worth it in terms of money to continue teaching some children mathematics for what I used to get paid. I suppose I do enjoy doing it, but for that money I'd rather do other things I suppose..
How do I explain this and ask for a raise, most likely through texting or similar, without sounding greedy?

Advice a gaming computer build
It's been a while since I popped into webdiplomacy. I need some advice on a computer build, and I know quite a few people on this site are into gaming and might be able to steer me in the right direction.

The Celebrity Phone Hacking
I'm kind of happy of the response to this, ten years ago the victims would be blamed in the media, it seems the message that it's not the victim's fault that they were violated has come across strongly. I think that wouldn't have been the case just 10 years ago

If you could live anywhere in the world you wanted...
Free from familial or employment concerns, on an income of about $30-40,000 USD per year, where would it be and why?

An income of 30-40K USD would rule out living comfortably in many of the most desirable developed areas of the world. In some cities with the highest costs of living, that income would border on relative poverty.

I can't think of anywhere I'd call desirable where such an income would create problems. Still, I think its fairly clear that the spirit of the thread is that we should choose somewhere without money being a major consideration.

" If you could live anywhere in the world you wanted..." this is the OP, it does not say, based on X income where would you like to live?

Probably here in Prague. Beautiful city, 30-40K dollars is enough to live comfortably, and I speak the language.

Prague is beautiful, and given time I could learn to stop seeing the hordes of gypsy prostitutes and drug dealers that prey on tourists in holiday season. One thing I could never get used to, however, is the way beggars are expected to prostrate themselves and stare constantly at the ground. Very disturbing...

The reason most places are that cheap is because no one that lives there makes much money at all. I wonder how much of this job-market arbitrage the world can take, where you get paid in one market and spend in another...

Yeah, Prague can be pretty depressing socially.

Baton Rouge or New Orleans please. That's ample to live decently on and once you live here for a while, you'll never want to leave.

Chattanooga TN has a lot going for it (including Gigabit internet speeds for $70/m).

And is overall quite affordable.
Yeah tbh there are a ton of incredible places in the American South where $40k/yr is ample money to make a living

As things currently stand, I would live exactly where I am, in County Durham in the UK, although I would find the reduction in my income slightly annoying.

In the future, if Scotland becomes independent, I may consider returning to my birthplace, the Shetland Isles.

Rural Normandy would be good - lucky me for that's where I live now!
Why? Some reasons are: Because it's beautiful and green; You can buy fresh local grown food in season that tastes almost like you grew it yourself; People don't judge - more likely to ask your age than your job; because you still see people stop outside the baker's and not lock the car - more leave the keys in it - more leave the engine running!
Sadly it's slipping downhill to be more like the UK and maybe even the US although that is gladly perhaps longer away although McDonalds have invaded selling their terrible junk food.

Belgrade, Serbia.

My favorite city in the world. Big enough to be interesting, small enough to be easy to get around. Cosmopolitan and vibrant, with a rich history.

...And $40k/year easily puts you in the top 0.5% of the population.

Agree with Putin. Also, already live there.

Everest Basin, Nepal. I'd take the $40k and donate something around 35 of it to the local communities and I'd still be relatively wealthy.

This is an interestind discussion. Being from Los Angeles and currently living in London the 30 to 40 thousand figure is certainly a bit low.

bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

Sure, if you live in LA or London or NYC or somewhere like that and want to live like a rockstar. If you want a small home with a family or single, whichever you prefer, with enough to eat, $40k is more than enough. Having that much would be a dream in much of the world.

New Orleans

That, or Portland parish, Jamaica, where I just was.

If it's somewhere I haven't lived, I pick Goma. I'd live there because such a place deserves to have more foreigners living there, instead everyone trying to run away. Call it a solidarity choice. Plus, the surrounding countryside is beautiful. Maybe one day it will be at peace and be a nice place to visit

Russia is being overly aggressive in a live game
I'm playing as Ukraine in a live game, and Russia just messaged on global that if anyone helps me, they will use nukes. Nukes! What can I do?? He's already taken Crimea! Germany isn't talking to me. England is being friendly but they're not doing anything to help me. Oh and France just built a fleet in Marseilles. I think they're sending it against me! Ugh! Help!

When 2,000 people die due to government incompetence...
Why does no one care? It has been 9 years now since Hurricane Katrina and the flooding of New Orleans due to atrocious management of the Mississippi Delta by the Corps of Engineers, and no one has been held accountable aside from one sacrificial political appointee who was allowed to retire gracefully. Why? http://www.hulu.com/watch/394996

NFL Pick 'em: Pre-Week 1 Prediction Edition!
Week 1 of the 2014-15 NFL Season kicks off on Thursday with the Packers looking to get revenge for the Fail Mary vs. the *grrr* defending Super Bowl Champion Seahawks. We'll do the proper Pick 'em when that gets closer, but since we usually do playoff picks before that...this is that. So--your 6 playoff picks in both the AFC and NFC, winners in the Wild Card, Divisional, and Conference Championship rounds, and then, the Super Bowl winner...PICK 'EM! ;)
