How does one ask a raise without sounding greedy?
This year I'm much more busy than last year so I kind of don't consider it worth it in terms of money to continue teaching some children mathematics for what I used to get paid. I suppose I do enjoy doing it, but for that money I'd rather do other things I suppose..
How do I explain this and ask for a raise, most likely through texting or similar, without sounding greedy?

I'm kind of happy of the response to this, ten years ago the victims would be blamed in the media, it seems the message that it's not the victim's fault that they were violated has come across strongly. I think that wouldn't have been the case just 10 years ago

I'm playing as Ukraine in a live game, and Russia just messaged on global that if anyone helps me, they will use nukes. Nukes! What can I do?? He's already taken Crimea! Germany isn't talking to me. Diplomacy Play Style Quiz
I'm working on a play style quiz and could use help in finishing it. I posted it on playdip.com and only received 2 responses to the survey, although they were helpful. Here's how you can help:

First, take the quiz. It's found at the following link:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0By8Lxx-CeQZwZU1BdWJfNTJtTzA/edit?usp=sharing

Write down your answers to the questions. After completing it, email the answers and your stats (win%, draw%, survival% and elimination% as it is currently listed on your profile) to [email protected]

Alternatively, you can send them to me via PM on this site.

For experienced players, you can help even more. The goal is to have ranked the options from most aggressive to most defensive where aggressive is defined as having little regard to what you currently own in an attempt to maximize your current position. Defensive is defined as having high regard for what you currently own to the extent that you will go to any end necessary to prevent losing anything.

The second way you can help, is that if you feel there really should have been an option in one of the questions that simply wasn't available, include that in your response to me.

Third, and lastly, if you, as an experienced player, have another scenario that could be used in the survey, include that as well.

My goal is to have about 20 questions (give-or-take) ranging from diplomatic scenarios, build scenarios, spring and fall moves, retreat scenarios, and early, mid-game and late-game scenarios that are "common" in their nature (even if unit placement varies or country ownership is different).

Once this survey is completed, my goal is to be able to allow someone to categorize their play style into a sliding measure ranging from highly aggressive/risk-taker to highly defensive/risk-averse. It would describe their play style and give a range of win/draw/survival/elimination percentages that are common to this play style and possibly offer suggestions on ways to maximize their gains under this style of play.

What I don't want it to do is to assume that one play style is better than another.

Thanks in advance to anyone that takes this and responds!

Question 5: You need to specify if it is Fall or Spring.
Question 6: What exactly is the difference between A) and D) ?

Sent in answers via email. I didn't see any problem with the questions as posed, although I think there might have been an error in one of the maps (the lategame Italy one has Tunis as a neutral and a 1-unit surplus, presumably Tunis is meant to be Italian).

#5 answer D is not possible.
It's worded wrong but the point I think is to hold/support hold where you can as an option
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
24 Aug 14 UTC
Il take a look. In that question, it's the fall retreats and Italy will go from 3 units to 2 and thus have a disband. Tunis should be French.
Sorry I'm not being clear. I mean the one where you're trying to figure out whether to try for the solo. You have 14 units and 13 SCs but Tunis is neutral (when in any such scenario Tunis is almost assuredly Italian). I don't think it matters to the tactics much but it might.

ssorenn is talking about the Turkey vs Austria-Italy example, where one option, "mutual support holds," is impossible due to the connection between the units being overland and one unit being a fleet.

The Italy-disband scenario is completely accurate and needn't be altered.
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
24 Aug 14 UTC
Ahhh, ok. Question 4, Tunis should be under Italian control.

Question 5: Option D should be hold and support hold.

So far, there are about 10 people surveyed. Not a bad start. I will say that the results are not what I expected. In some questions, there is very little spread, while other questions are all over the place.

If I can get at least 20 people, I will post results in this thread so that you all can see, although for anonymity's sake, no names will be posted.

9 more to go and I can post responses here so you can compare how you tend to do things with others. The link to the quiz can be found here:

abge: part of the purpose of the quiz is for me to gather input. If there are options there that should be there but aren't, then let me know. I'm trying to put together the most common options, and since they're under my biased opinion, I may miss some other choices.
Yonni (136 D(S))
28 Aug 14 UTC
I think you could formulate some questions about how people respond to specific press. S01 press would be easiest to contextualize. You could give a couple of opening paragraphs and see what people gravitate towards.
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
28 Aug 14 UTC
I was thinking the same thing. I'm certainly open to some examples.

I thought about pulling some from actual press I've received to allow for a variety of options. Some would include players that open right up with a plan, others who open with the idea of a bounce, etc.
Octavious (2701 D)
28 Aug 14 UTC
I agree with Yonni. The whole "barring diplomatic negotiations" aspect of many of the questions I struggle with because diplomatic negotiations (or absence of) is the primary factor in my decision making. As such most of the scenarios are entirely alien to me.
JECE (1248 D)

Tru Ninja: You asked on PLAYDiplomacy.

Damned timing :p.

Oh, one other thing. Is it possible to have the late game stab question with a full map?
peterwiggin (15158 D)
28 Aug 14 UTC
I was a bit curious why in so many of the situations, Tunis remained neutral late into the game?

The barring diplomatic negotiations bit was tough for me as well. I do quite well in press games, but my record in gunboat is pretty weak. I think that's partially because in press, I can better set up aggressive moves, especially in the opening. Looking forward to seeing the results though!
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
29 Aug 14 UTC
@ Octavious: I agree to a pretty good extent. The reason I remove some of the diplomacy behind it is that I'm trying to get people to move the way they would most likely go with in most circumstances.

Players play one of two ways. Either (a) their moves are dictated by their diplomacy with other nations or (b) their diplomacy with other nations is dictated by where they want to move.

I would love to identify which player is which because I believe that it is one of the big factors in play style, although it's hard to put together in a traditional sense for a quiz.

I think it would be great to include a series of 10 questions that use a combination of prior true-to-life scenarios where diplomacy is present and a series of moves are discussed and players are required to determine whether they would move as person A suggests, person B suggests or some alternative route, etc. If I use my own scenarios taken from my press from games I've played, it's going to be tainted by the way I talk to others.

If you all are open to putting together some questions like the ones you're suggesting, then by all means, lay them on me. Include snippets of press. We can poll the community to give a list of moves they would make based on the presence of specific conversations, but I'd need you all to select real press you've had from games in these types of scenarios or others you've come across that really requires a player to make a difficult decision that can change a game.

@peterwiggin: Tun shouldn't be neutral. If it is, it's controlled by Italy. There's one where it's controlled by France but the coloring isn't very clear.

@octavious: Yes, I will try to change that for a full-map view.
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
29 Aug 14 UTC
and yes, I polled Playdip as well for the added support. I have only received 3 responses from playdip compared to nearly 4 times that amount in less time. That's why I've played here for nearly 6 years and there for only 2 games.

@bo: you can PM em or email em. I check both like 100 times per day. I wish there was a way that this site could send me a text anytime someone sends a message in webdip or moves process, or when deadlines to post moves are within a certain time frame.
Yonni (136 D(S))
29 Aug 14 UTC
If I understand the motivation for this survey, I think you stay away from showing the whole map and having tactics play a huge role in the decision making. You might get into the realm of objectively correct decisions instead of more personality driven move.

NFL Pick 'em: Pre-Week 1 Prediction Edition!
Week 1 of the 2014-15 NFL Season kicks off on Thursday with the Packers looking to get revenge for the Fail Mary vs. the *grrr* defending Super Bowl Champion Seahawks. We'll do the proper Pick 'em when that gets closer, but since we usually do playoff picks before that...this is that. So--your 6 playoff picks in both the AFC and NFC, winners in the Wild Card, Divisional, and Conference Championship rounds, and then, the Super Bowl winner...PICK 'EM! ;)
