Such a shame really. I mean, I didnt either for a long time and honestly don't particularly love the game, but it is the great unifier of the global population. I cannot enter a taxi on earth without people starting to ask me questions about Van Persie. After a while I just decided it was my loss not to look into the game, not that of the rest of the world.

You can enter a taxi any where in NYC and they *won't* ask you about this Van Persie person.

I can't help enjoying how much the tiny country of the Dutch tend to kick ass on the worldstage when it comes to various sports, even though I don't really care about winning/losing or watching, it's just a fun fact for me.

Various sports? You do well at football and hockey... oh, and darts of course... Nothing else springs instantly to mind.

And I agree with Steephie, alsmost regardless of the sport, there always seems to be a *few* great Dutch athletes. Not the same volume as the US/Russia/China, but always a few real good ones.

Also, @TMOW: we kicked Chinese ass big time at the Winter Olympics, but I suppose that isn't a big achievement given how China did... But still!

Yeah well, winter olympics is more a contest of "who is the whitest" anyway. You know it's not representative of global culture when Norway, Holland and Switzerland are dominating. I think it's about as impressive as the Chinese domination of the Mahjong World Cup.

You guys really have nothing in baseball, don't act like middle-of-the-road is impressive at all considering how few nations have good teams put together.

I just don't like soccer. Way too boring and nothing happens.

The good thing about the US is we have so many sports, you can be into whatever. Baseball, football, basketball, hockey, soccer, and a variety of lesser sports (lacrosse, rugby, etc. especially at high school / college level), and we always put on a good show in the Olympics.

Don't forget the solo aports like tennis, golf, skiing, etc.

Tennis isn't really an American sport. We have one American of any note (Serena Williams). Granted, she's the best women's tennis player ever. But American tennis has been terrible for a while.

US puts on a good show in the olympics because we dominate in medal heavy sports like swimming. Much like how the Dutch "do well" because speed skating gives out 5,000 medals.

And plenty happens in soccer, and you don't have to sit through hours of commercials.

Football is a 3 second play. A five minute replay. A 3 second play. A 5 minute commercial break.

I disagree. American tennis is going through a painful dry spell, but it is home to one of the four major tournaments. Admittedly it is the poorest of the four, but it is one of them nonetheless. The tennis hall of fame is littered with American names.

Australia and the UK are also home to major tournaments. That's rather meaningless as both of those countries aren't exactly tennis powerhouses. The UK made a huge fuss over the fact that Murray finally won their tournament after half a millennium.

If majors went to countries who were actually good at tennis, they'd be in Spain and Russia.

Fact is, there is no country that dominates in tennis - so to suggest that tennis isn't a US sport is to say that tennis isn't any country's sport. It's just a display of ignorance.

It doesn't mean you have a nation of great players, but it does mean that the sport is firmly lodged in the national psyche. Very few people in the UK have never played tennis. We have millions of players of the sport. As does the US

Spain has 9 players in the top 35 (in men's); including the world #1 and #7.

I'll give that there's more parity in women's tennis right now. The Russians don't dominate like they used to a few years ago.
