I'm new to the games. By accident I joined two. One permits me to issue orders, the other does not. Why

Hi, I'm new!
So I've found out about this awesome game and I'm looking to get into it while I have the free time available in my schedule.
The game rules are petty clear to me, but how do we communicate in-game? Is there a PM system, or do we use e-mail?

Bowie
I don't appreciate David Bowie as much as I think I should, and I feel badly about that, so I'm trying to make today an all-Bowie day at work. So please suggest a Bowie album for me to listen to. What's your favorite Bowie album and why?

Masculinity
At some point during the day, I reflected on this topic. Not in a "am I masculine" kind of way, but I tried to analyze the subject sort of as a neutral non-male observer. Should a "man" be "masculine"? Can a woman be masculine? Fascinating questions if you ask me.

There's a lot of interesting discussion to be had around societal expectations of gender, but unfortunately the audience doesn't seem to be mature enough for that.

Mendax wins the thread. These discussions have been tried before many times. It's inevitably met with a lot of people bearing their fangs, and gnashing their teeth, as any questioning of the socially constructed gender dichotomy is haram here, and is held as some kind of subversive plot to obliterate freedom or something.

Ironically one of the more memorable discussions centered around trans-gendered people & bathrooms. Redhouse played a large role in that one.

Many many things throughout history have upended gender roles and redefined our conceptions of masculinity and manhood, such as liberalism and individualism, modernized warfare and industrialization, and globalization. In my opinion, we are a very immasculate society just in reference to our breeches of privacy which has been referred to in recent posts. We're basically lapdogs for The Man, not a very masculine concept.

Sometimes it might be important to know if there is electricity running through something, or if there is a bear in the shed. There might be no multimeter or bear bait on hand to do the job. Does it make sense to "man up" in these situations? Does masculinity always involve severe natural selective pressure?
krellin (80 DX)

@Putin - If by "bearing fangs" you mean "disagreed with Putin" you are probably right. Yes, the discussions have been tried many times, and inevitably you say that anything that society looks at as normal is evil, and if anyone makes an argument that maybe there is something natural in certain gender roles, you fly off that handle and call them evil and twisted.

Yeah...all sorts of fangs get bared in these discussions, because all you want to do is tell everyone that they are wrong and evil.

So how about this...I'll bear some fangs: Fuck off.....or, maybe you should get someone to do that for you with a dildo, because I'm sure you don't believe it is proper to use your penis in a manly manner.

I had to look up a word: "immasculate." Here's what I found" Urban Dictionary: immasculate. Here's what I found:
www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=immasculate‎
Generally, improper spelling of 'emasculate' Used in urban language to reduce the masculinity of.
COTW (836 D)

ok, well, I meant it as an adjective, supplying what I thought would be the proper prefix. I guess I should've run it passed the online Urban dictionary, a crutch for a generally thoughtless population. If you've read much that's worth reading, you'll find that intelligent authors very often craft words to specify a certain meaning, as long as they are following grammatical guidelines.

Web pages like these should be used, not dictionaries. Understanding principles and fundamentals in language, as in anything, opens the door for original thought and further understanding of a concept.

I'll say this--

If "masculine" is like the Hemingway ideal of going outside and shooting and fishing and hunting and being self-sufficient and rugged and all that...

There are a hell of a lot of women more "masculine" than city-loving, inside-loving, opera, big-screen TV and air conditioning-loving me.

I know quite a few ladies who know how to shoot and like to...and some that go camping and hiking and all that jazz...

Not me--not my thing.

I'd just rather hang out in cafes and go to jazz bars and have conversations about whatever than do any of that. ;)

COTW (836 D)

funny you say that because Hemingway liked to hang out in cafes and jazz bars

but you're right, "masculinity" is a social construct which started a long time ago in reference to typical gender roles: hunting, fighting and the sort.
Hemingway's book "The Sun Also Rises" challenges and reverses gender roles, as it was becoming apparent in the modern industrialized and liberalized world. I guess in order to investigate the concept, there must be a consensus on the definition of "masculine", which would be nearly impossible to pinpoint as it changes from era to era, place to place, etc.

@Putin:

And your pissing all over your fellow posters officially makes this a real dog of a thread.

(Seriously, it's not like I went off on a Shakespeare tangent, my comments were relevant, what the hell?)

@COTW:

1. The Sun Also Rises (slight Antisemitism aside...ah, poor Roy Cohn...) is awesome. :)

2. I think it's more about expatriation after WWI and Jake, Brett and Co. trying to find themselves again in a world of festivals, bullfights, drinking and alienation, culminating with Jake and Brett just not being able to make things work, an allegory for how the Lost Generation felt after the War (and of course Jake's injury to his "groin area" is a perfect example of irony--even in Hemingway's day a lot of folks thought going to war made you a man, but Jake comes back with arguably the part of his body most associated with manhood forever scarred...great book.)

3. Well, we could try and build a consensus here of what masculinity means...if Putin cease and desist from his one-man dick-waving contest for a few seconds

The point is there can be no consensus, because it is a social construct dependent on the mores of the cultural context of any given time.

And lighten up, Obi.

Is that a wise idea to classify what masculinity means? In effort to do so, will we not exclude many great men? Shall we make it broad enough to include both the rugged mountaineer and the astute intellectual? Do we include the man whose anima has caused him to love other men? Maybe we should use concrete and measurable terms, like the presence of a penis. Or is it the testosterone of the penis that makes a man bold and take risks?

All I know is that obiwanobiwan is the epitome of manhood. We should all aspire to be just like him.

Also, I believe porn is the opposite of manliness. When a man resorts to satisfying his sexual gratifications without commitment, he is destroying the fundamental principles of life, the family.

Also, the man who is lazy and refuses to work is not manly. The drunkard who cannot control his own flesh is one of misery. When he does not provide for his family is unworthy to grow his beard or wear a mustache.

Putin33 (111 D)
11 Nov 13 UTC
Manliness has become synonymous with capacity and will to inflict and endure violence. I cannot think of any other definition that is not ad hoc or consistent across time & place.

Putin, I've let others say it for me in the past, because my comments would be redundant, but I've gotta speak out this time ... Your just fucking crazy! It's like you argue just to argue! Who the hell equates manliness with the capacity and will to inflict violence? Seriously who? Here, or in the media, or in pop culture or anywhere else? You can't just make bullshit statements like that and expect to be taken seriously!
