Express your interest below. And, of course, thanks to Kestas, the mods, and the peanut gallery for making this the best site on the Internet.

Who's in? 17 world gunboats, one game as each nation, 50 hour phases, WTA, anon, ready-up preferred (but no means required), only prearranged pauses (example, if someone insists on a winter break pause, we will ask the mods to unpause at an agreed time if we don't unpause ourselves by then), 5 D bets for a total of 85 D buy-in. Who's in?

Balancing the map
Has anyone tried seeing what would happen if Albania was made into a supply center and Serbia was turned into an ordinary neutral? I would expect stronger wars between A/I and between R/T. Thoughts, please.

Draws
Sifting through 10 pages of open positions, I am noticing that it's increasingly uncommon that people actually draw for a CD. In a few games, people have pushed for it, and others have seemed to have no understanding as to why they'd draw for a CD. Did this etiquette just disappear like magic? Pre-1903 CDs should *always* constitute a draw and post-1903 CDs should constitute a draw if they result in a loss of a line that would otherwise be present. When did this stop?

Allan B Calhamer (1931-2013)
I just got an email today from Edi Birsan. Allan Calhamer, creator of the board game diplomacy, has passed away. His daughter said her mother "would welcome any memories/stories about Allan or thoughts on what Diplomacy has meant to you."
So please put in thoughts and memories about diplomacy and I'll collect them and send them to her.

Zombie Apocalypse is almost here
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ueBZuZAoglE
The fact that our elected officials are talking about ways to stop the outbreak is proof that we should be concerned. So stock pile food ammo and guns, cause your going to need them in the coming months.
If anyone has advice for surviving the Apocalypse, feel free to post below.

But you aren't taking into account losses and the fact that zombies travel in packs. Add in that fact that your soldiers are not trained in battlefield tactics and while your kill rate my be a bit higher, your loss rate is going to be at least 20% of your kill rate. So even if you kill 100 per day, you are losing 20 per day or upwards of 200 per week. You have less than 3 months of soldiers and would eventually be scraping the bottom ofthe barrel.

That's not to say the veterans wouldn't learn tactics that worked with the zombies in time and your losses would be reduced, but you wuld be better off to attarct the zombies into a kill zone and clear the city by drawing them out until no more were coming out after you, *then* go in and clean up the stragglers.

A loss rate of 20% of your kill rate? That seems awfully high to me when talking about an armed fighting force against an unarmed opponent.

Especially if we do most of our hunting during the winter, and presuming the aforementioned "zombie freeze" of a Maine winter.

(Portland has five months of the year during with the average daily low is less than 32 degrees F.)
Draugnar (0 DX)

Zombies aren't going to freeze up just because the water does. It is going to require much colder temperatures than that. Snakes are cold blooded and manage to survive the sometimes below zero winters we get here in Ohio. For them to freeze, you need it to have the daily *high* be below 20 for at least a week.
Draugnar (0 DX)
01 Mar 13 UTC
But I still think drawing them out whatever time of the year and just blasting and burning as they come would be the safer method. Then a Winter cleanup of the remainder in the city and you could move back in during the Spring.
hecks (164 D)
01 Mar 13 UTC
Well, snakes also burrow underground to survive the winter. I'm presuming the zombies don't. Also, cold-blooded animals' activity greatly decreases as the temperature gets lower, even before it gets below freezing. Presuming this happens to the zombies as well, it may extend our hunting season substantially.
Draugnar (0 DX)
01 Mar 13 UTC
Yes, winter hunting should be easier do to the slower pace. But that presumes that zombies have blood flow. The cold may not affect them at all unless their muscles and skin actually freeze up. Do we know if zombies have flowing blood? Seems if they did, that something would be pumping it and they wouldn't actually be dead, just maybe "brain dead".
hecks (164 D)
01 Mar 13 UTC
Well, that's a good point. Fact it, there's a lot we won't know until it happens. Communicable by fluid exchange only, or airborne? Fast movers or staggering lurchers? Will they freeze in winter or not? Is it possible they'll even be warm-blooded? I think for now we have to presume they don't have blood-flow. Otherwise it would be possible to kill them by breaking the skin and letting them bleed out, in which case they'd seem to be something other than zombies.

Zombies are always pictured eating humans, but if they have no humans to eat, do they starve to death? Cannabalize each other?

Between cold weather and lack of food, I don't see a zombie apocalypse lasting more than a couple of years. Makes me wonder if the rebuilding era won't be more dangerous...what will keep us from reverting to feudalism or even warlordism? Perhaps we should be making plans further out than mere survival. Democracy is a rare and delicate flower, and I have a hard time seeing a zombie apocalypse as an ideal hothouse.
Gunfighter06 (224 D)

If the downtown area is on a peninsula as you say, you will have to first cut across the narrowest point of the peninsula and isolate it from the mainland. This will be a complicated maneuver for a ragtag untrained militia with nothing more powerful than common hunting weapons, no effective communication methods, and with the possibility of hostile survivors and zombies running rampant. A component of this militia will have to secure the peninsula while the other component holds the line separating the peninsula from the mainland, once again without effective beyond-visual-range communication.

@ FlemGem

Reestablishing a functional democratic or republican government would not be difficult in a theoretical sense. The tricky part would be reestablishing communication between enough survivors that a government could be organized.
FlemGem (1297 D)

@ Gunfighter

Communication wouldn't be any harder than it was in the 1780's. Certain regions would be overrun by zombies, until search and destroy teams could clear such zones, but I predict that rudimentary wireless communication would be re-established fairly quickly.

My main concern is that, in the rush to secure safe zones, various populations would adopt authoritarian modes of government. In significantly reduced populations such governments could be highly effective. Would those regimes want to *unite* with other survivors, or would they want to *conquer*?
Gunfighter06 (224 D)
02 Mar 13 UTC
That is true. Personally, I am hoping for some sort of post-apocalyptic "good" faction to take responsibility for securing the nation.

How does your hope for a "good faction" jive with your vision of a small, independent, roving band of survival commandos?

There is $2 Trillion in American money of all world currencies in circulation combined. The U.S. National debt is $16 Trillion. So there is literally not enough money in the world to pay it back.

For the easy payment of 15 D, you can enjoy the chance to rule the
world with The World Wide Schlieffen Plan. ( http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=111246 ) . If you can take 10 minutes out of you day for possible world domination, than this deal is for you. In fact this deal is just to good. I'm gonna have to put a time limit
of 7 days for this. I would wait that long though. there's only 13 spaces

So, ckroberts just pointed out that in a newspaper article on something US supreme court judge Roberts said about Massachusetts, whereas the debate could have possibly been resolved by providing data, they treated it as a "he-said he-said thing". I actually see that a lot.
