Is anyone interested in a live game in an hour or so?
Stuck in the boonies tonight so I wouldn't mind a live game. I'd prefer to make it password protected . WTA, classic of course. Open on the bet but I'd prefer low pot. Any interest for a 930 EST start?

Belgian Gambit
I've thought about opening with Belgian Gambit (Bre-Mid, Par-Pic, Mar-Bur) next time I draw France, particularly in a gunboat game. It seems to have a decent record with other players, and I've never used it myself... any thoughts on it?

I tried to go back into the thread but it's locked...so, here it is, the long awaited WHAT THE HECK?! map where no single area on the board has the same color touching. Special thanks to Jesus who made this possible.

Bounce question (due to mind fart!)
If a unit attacks an opposing unit that is supporting another opposing unit into the original units territory, will both attacking units bounce?

I feel like I know the answer to this but in the middle of a very serious mind fart.... Please help me clear the air on this one guys

I think I need a break from this game
What is it lately? Every game I've been in, I am dealing with people who get all upset and start making personal attacks or start saying "I'm taking my ball and going home! How dare you stab me! I'm going to abandon everything and help some other player win, while trash-talking you incessantly!!"

I have a personal philosophy about this game, and it helps me step back and not get so pissed about a stab. Well, first I should say that I can almost always tell that I'm going to be attacked before it happens, but that comes with experience.

That said, my philosophy is simply "there is no alliance to be had except one that can be forced." Meaning that if I don't force someone to continue to work with me, then I can expect to get stabbed. Ways I "force" someone to work with me is (a) play defensively enough that I don't expose my weak-point to my ally, (b) ensure that my ally always has something to do and (c) keep up regular, well talked-through communication.

If I get stabbed, it's almost always because I've violated one of these rules.

Now, that said, you're always going to find people that play, get screwed and whine about it, throw fits, cuss, and help others solo. It's part of the game. It happens even among veteran players. No one wants to lose, and people invest a lot of emotion into the game and many come into the game with high expectations. When they feel they're not playing up to their abilities or something doesn't work the way they feel it ought to, stuff like that happens.

Too true, Tru Ninja. Maybe I'll play my next game to ensure that I don't violate those rules myself.

Interesting that Sy brings up Calhamer. Everyone I've spoken to who's actually played with him seems to agree that the man himself is a terrible player, mostly because he stabs way too much.

Lol... am I nominated for the stick, dippers?

"Everyone I've spoken to who's actually played with him seems to agree that the man himself is a terrible player, mostly because he stabs way too much."

Yeah, that happens to me too. I invented a card game when I was 15, that smacks a bit of Diplomacy - simple gameplay, tricky bidding. When I play it now 20 years later with my son and wife I always lose. I don't know what I do wrong...

I was playing a public press game and a player muted me, while declaring never to play with me again... I had made the terrible mistake of blatantly asking for an alliance in global and he was not included in it. On top of that I had ignored his message.

You know, it's actually really great when these players start muting. I'll eventually end up in a "bubble" without any hotheads and they will gradually remove all real diplomacy players from theirs. A win-win?
Mafialligator (239 D)
04 May 12 UTC
Yeah I've had this happen too. Worse than that, I get players who adopt a condescending, superior tone, and tell me that I made a grave mistake in stabbing them, and if I were any kind of a diplomacy player at all, I'd see that my only chance for victory as Turkey, was to make sure that they, Austria, stay alive for the entire game, and that the real key to a Turkish victory is to capture Scandinavia and Liverpool, but that I'm clearly much to narrow minded and limited in my thinking to see this glaringly obvious possibility.

Oddly these sorts of players always have fewer than 5 games on their record here at webdip, but even though they're new to the site they're veteran players, who've been playing face to face games for 40 years. However, in spite of this extensive experience, they make the bizarre, and unpredictable moves more typical of new players, have no concept of how to actually talk to someone in order to get them to do what you want, and often even fail to correctly count the number of supply centres a certain set of moves would gain someone. And this has happened in nearly exactly the same way at least 3 times.

Very nice word all round. But you get that !

I once got a very silver tongued player, support and guide me all the way until he changed the way he talked, gone the global spin and perspective stopped then I knew it was the knife for me.

Best bitter fight ever ah! I lost but hey it was a great game.
Try this site @dipplayer variants galore + more features, stats and such.

It is genius I tell you. And no I'm not ruining the anonymity of the game, I am not in this one since I so badly wanted to point out how awesome the name was.
