Continuing my philosophy of "post the change you want to be", a music exchange thread! I can't be the only music addict on here. This is intended as a place to ask for new music for your gunboats, hear if anyone likes similar bands, etc. I'm something of a schizophrenic pansexual in music. Anything that is a bit odd makes me happy, no matter what style. Lately I've been listening to Howe Gelb and Lambchop, slick alt-country and lo-fi, screeching, spastic alt-country, a good mix. If anyone has similar tips, I'd be more than happy. I'll start it off with a few tips in different genres.
If you like metal, I guess you've already heard Leviathan by Mastodon. If not, it's the best thing to happen to metal in a long, long time. I have a particular fondness for minimalist doom, and I have two extremes for you. Khanate makes it with noise and the bleakest sound you've heard, check out their self-titled record. On the other end of the spectrum, Esoteric makes their doom in druggy, drony, epic, face-crushing fashion. Metamorphogenesis is a long, lovely psychosis.
In electronica, I assume you've heard about Venetian Snares, but if not, he's the best there ever was. You'll want Rossz Csillag Allat Szuletett, a true masterpiece that turns techno into an art form. Samplings of Hungarian composers mixed with truly jaw-dropping blastbeats that fucks your perception of time. If this is too artsy for you and you want straight up breakcore, Hospitality is great. I'm also fond of kid606, check out Kill Sound Before Sound Kills You.
In jazz, I'm not that experienced, but I always return to Charles Mingus. The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady is a genius record, or Mingus Ah Um if you like latin, Pithecanthropus Erectus if you like archeology. I would love more jazz tips.
If you like Arcade Fire and Wolf Parade, I recommend 90 Day Men. Their record Panda Park is better than Funeral in my opinion. Dinosaur Jr. is a must if you haven't heard them. They did as much for music in the 80s as Pixies did, check out You're Living All Over Me. Another great 80s record is of course Big Black's Songs About Fucking, putting Devo through a blender. If you haven't listened to hip-hop at all, It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back is my favourite, and of course The Low End Theory by A Tribe Called Quest.
I could do this all day. If you want specific tips, ask me. If you can give me something really good, I'll give you a kidney.
