Music you just discovered
Ever since I quit DJing (a long time ago already), I've had a hard time keeping up with new sounds. If you've discovered a band or an artist recently and really like them, let this be a forum where you can share your luck with others.

Going to Osheaga, in Montreal last month, I've come across a few good bands I didn't know like Yoav and Death From Above 1979. I've also rediscovered people like: Eminem (great show), Sam Roberts Band (amazing performer, ok rock music), Beirut, Broken Social Scene (both more folkish, the latter with a definite rock attitude), The Sounds (kick ass rock!), Karkwa (amazing French Québecois Prog Rock band... not so far from sounds like Radiohead actually), and many others.

I'm a concert reviewer and I'm into Yoav. It's really special. Especially live.

I recently reviewed Agnes Obel, check out her song "Riverside". Also reviewed Iron & Wine, which I think is better on the album. He really plays around live, rearranges stuff like you wouldn't believe. Or go back and listen to Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On". I also dig The Kills. Have a small daughter so don't get to turn it up so often! :-)

When I lived in Louisiana there was a band called Givers that was really big there. They are kind of an indie-pop and they're a lot of fun. Pretty percussive, very dance-able.

Recently I saw a video with a Ludovico Einaudi piece as the background. Immediately following that, I found a few of his other works, and proceeded to buy his CDs. That's right, BUY with real money, not just torrent! :)
It's not everyone's cup of tea as it were, but I really enjoy his piano works, so if you're looking for some beautiful piano melodies, then check him out.
Cachimbo (1181 D)

Already quite a few things to check out!

Yoav live was fantastic. His show was too short though, and even if he wanted to stay on (he actually argued quite a bit with the stage manager) and the crowd was begging, he couldn't make it longer. I'll certainly be there next time he comes.
Cachimbo (1181 D)
31 Aug 11 UTC
As for Marvin Gaye, he's never too far. One of the most beautiful voices soul has ever had.

31 Aug 11 UTC
Agnes Obel is pretty good. Thanks for that.
It reminds me a bit of Tori Amos and that genre, something not heard as often since the early/mid 90s.
I like Iron & Wine as well. Not without some connections with a band like Belle and Sebastian.
Cachimbo (1181 D)
31 Aug 11 UTC
Checked out the Givers as well. Good sound. I'm sure they're really fun in a live show. Somewhat in the same genre, I think of Vampire Weekend.

The Russian band DDT is always worth a listen if you like a Slavic Dire Straits sound. Not new, but awesome.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
31 Aug 11 UTC
Theyre not new but check out Pete Rock and CL Smooth's The Main Ingredient. Best flows I've ever heard.
I've been a Meat Loaf fan since the '70s, but "Jar of Hearts" by Christina Perri - (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8v_4O44sfjM&ob=av2e) simply blew me away!
Putin33 (111 D)

White Stripes , I like their minimalism, the equipment they use and the fact that they have a female drummer.

Ges (292 D)

That young Bieber fellow is the bee's knees. Baby, baby, baby, oh!
Cachimbo (1181 D)
31 Aug 11 UTC
@Putin: If you enjoy White Stripes, you must check out Death From Above 1979, also a 2-man band. It's a touch more hardcore, I think, but very effective.
Cachimbo (1181 D)
31 Aug 11 UTC
I must confess to no particular liking for Meat Loaf. Similarly, Christina Perry did not have on me the effect it had on you, SpeakerToAliens. Thanks for the reference though, cause I had no knowledge of her at all.

As for Pete Rock and CL Smooth, I like them. Somewhere between ATCQ and the Roots maybe...
Cachimbo (1181 D)
31 Aug 11 UTC
And I must confess that DDT and Bieber have failed to make me interested, though I will readily concede that the former obviously has more to offer than the latter.
Ges (292 D)
31 Aug 11 UTC
DDT obviously has more to offer if you know Russian. If you want to hear a crazy primal Russian sound, Vladimir Vysotsky's "Pesnia o druge" is worth five minutes of your time.
Cachimbo (1181 D)
31 Aug 11 UTC
Don't mind if I do! Right after this live Franz Ferdinand song I hear blaring in the background!
Putin33 (111 D)
31 Aug 11 UTC
Ha, I recognize Pesnya o Druge. Great song. Not sure what you mean by primal though.
Cachimbo (1181 D)
31 Aug 11 UTC
I liked that one much better than DDT's.
Ges (292 D)
31 Aug 11 UTC
@Putin: By "primal" I am simply referring to the raw vocal edge that is typical of the Russian bardic style of popular music. It's a good thing.
Putin33 (111 D)
31 Aug 11 UTC
Ah yes. It is a good song for learning Russian. I heard it on Nu Pogodi.

Recent discoveries? Kate Havnevik, though I don't know how long she's been around. There's also Florence + The Machine, who I've known about for about a year now, but worth mentioning as she's severely unknown.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

"Somewhere between ATCQ and the Roots maybe... "

Meaning you like ATCQ better and Roots less? Or the other way around? The first order is correct, the second order is vastly misguided. Lol.

Or did you just mean they are a like a cross between the two? Haha.

Oh yeah and I assume you've heard of Odd Future, especially Earl Sweatshirt but if you somehow missed that train I suggest checking them out they are extremely thought-provoking.
Cachimbo (1181 D)
01 Sep 11 UTC
I meant that their style was at the confluent of ATCQ and The Roots.

And though their sounds are quite different, don't mess with The Roots!

By the way, have you seen this?

There's a second part if you like that.

I was a little preoccupied in the last month but I still managed to find some worthwhile, though not exactly fresh, artists:

Angerfist - a little ahead of Neophyte, i.e. the best gabber there is. Also likes to sample Eminem a lot, look for In A Million Years to see an example.
Bain Wolfkind - a very sleazy downtempo Southern rock, the aesthetics are somewhere between neofolk and blues
Thy Light - depressive suicidal black metal made by a guy with classical music background, compared to the rest of the realm of DSBM, the vocals are easy to bear for an untrained ear
Technology of Silence - industrial dark ambient, successfully invoking post-apocalyptic sceneries
Cloetta Paris - synthpop with really innocent vocals, catchy melodies and well structured progression in songs

Wolves in the Throne Room. Great modern black metal from Portland. Playing in my home town this weekend.

And Wolves in the Throne Room is probably the USBM band I respect the most although I think that black metal is somehow lacking in the States, especially compared to other metal genres.

@Ulytau: I thought it might have something to do with Odd Future, but it's only this morning that I researched it.

And no, I obviously don't know them yet. I'll check them out later today, them, and the other suggestions Uly made as well.

@ Hugo: not bad, but I can't say it got me.

I'd say Florence is known enough. I think one of her songs even made it on Glee (oh, and don't you geeks pretend you don't know what that is...!). I like some of her songs a lot, like her voice.

@WardenDresden: Yes, Ludovico Einaudi is a genius. I really like a lot of his sound. I Giorni is fantastic. Dietro Casa is another of my favorites.

And talking of Meatloaf, has anyone seen the literal video version of "I'd Do Anything For Love" ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BdKz3_tcW1E

Well...

I've just listened to Nas in African-American Literature...

And he just might be the first author/musician/artist I've encountered in a LONG time who I not only now have a viceral hatred of artistically, but personally, for what he seems to be writing for...

Well, that's a story for another thread, isn't it? And he's not exactly new, is he? ;)
So a pointy head told you to like him, so you like him. Sounds like the obi I know.
I like Mumford in Sons are doing, their music had to grow on me but when it did I really took to it.

Visceral hatred for personal reasons is something I have yet to develop towards musicians I hate for artistic reasons.

And generally, hatred means too much work, mocking or apathy are my usual modes of behaviour towards bad music. I reserve hatred mostly for the fans since they keep it going. I can't really hate on someone who's raking cash from his music, money is a legitimate reason to produce shit and I respect it.

No in game messaging?
I don't understand why we have or want the no in game messaging option. Doesn't that go against what diplomacy is all about? Especially if the game does not have anonymous players then I fear private messages would be exchanged but that would go against the intent of the option. I would appreciate if someone could explain how they play that option.
