Any musicians here?
The concert and metal threads got me thinking: Any fellow musicians here? I started playing trumpet when I was 9 years old, moved on to baritone horn in high school, and I've played guitar and written songs for about 13 years.
I know some of you must be musicians. I can tell from playing Diplomacy here that many of you have an excellent sense of timing. :D

Invalid support or Bug in World Diplomacy XI?
I can enter a fleet in SPO to support an army from Mary Byrd Land to Ross Ice shelf, but if I want o save that command I get "Parameter 'fromTerrID' set to invalid value '71'".
Should I report that as a bug?

Gaddafi's Gotta Go?
http://www.nationalreview.com/articles/262702/fog-obfuscation-rich-lowry

So far the Unites States, France, and Britain are limiting their attacks to destroying the Libyan military infrastructure, not aiding the rebels or targeting Gaddafi personally. How long can you be just a little bit interventionist?

I am getting tired of these low-pot WTA games, that break down in CDs , or other scandals..
Lets have a slightly higher pot game this time. You up?

Is there any interest in playing this type of live game:
- 5 mins/phase
- Non-anon (Player's names are visible) and ppsc
- No draws, cancels, or pauses.
(In case of stalemate I like the idea of seeing who can stay on the longest but I would be willing to draw instead if that was what people wanted)

why was support cut?
Situation described below.
Shevek (107 D)

Austria:
A Gal-War
A Sil S A Gal-War

Russia:
A War-Sil
A Pru S A War-Sil
A Mos-War

I thought that the Austrian move to Warsaw would succeed, because a unit can't cut support for an attack on itself, but an analogous situation came up in a game I am playing, and there was a standoff because the support from Silesia was cut. Is it because the unit was dislodged, not just attacked?
The unit was dislodged, and then Mos and Gal bounced in War.
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 Mar 11 UTC
It can *if* it successfully dislodges the supporting unit, which it did with the support from Pru, resulting in Mos and Gal bouncing and Sil being forced to retreat/disband.

I'd go with Benjamin Franklin.

That being said, here's a match-up I'd like to see:

England: Churchill
France: Napoleon
Germany: Wilhelm
Italy: Augustus
Austria: Leopold
Russia: Ivan
Turkey: Suleiman

There's many great leaders from each country. AtG would be a good one. I was considering Charlemagne too.

Catherine the Great really should be ruling Russia.

@trip, if that comment is directed at me, it's over my head. I just chose her because she was a good ruler in Civ 4, which is about as far as my historical knowledge goes. ;-)

@Lando, Star Wars took place "a long time ago"
They never really say form which reference point a long time ago is. The narrator could be even further in the future, right?
Alderian (2425 D(S))

@trip, Lando gave up Solo to win the war. Sometimes you have to retreat to ultimately advance.

Draugnar (0 DX)
23 Mar 11 UTC
Considering Star Wars was based on the classic literature form, the narrator is assumed to be talking from the audiences point of view, which means that would set the "long time ago" and "far, far away" as being relative to 20th Century Earth.
Shevek (107 D)
23 Mar 11 UTC
Originally, Star Wars was supposed to have been a history recorded by a species called the Whills, so "a long time ago" could be construed from their perspective.
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 Mar 11 UTC
@Shevek - That is incorrect. The Whills were an ancient order of Jedi who originally discovered how to transcend life itself.

"The ability to defy oblivion can be achieved, but only for oneself. It was accomplished by a Shaman of the Whills. It is a state acquired through compassion, not greed."
―Qui-Gon Jinn to Yoda

Qui-Gon, of course, went on to discover this secret himself as Yoda told Obiwan at the end of Revenge of the Sith.
Onar (131 D)
23 Mar 11 UTC
Which seemed like a sequel hook for one that was already made... and episode four, as we all know, makes no reference to Qui-Gon at any point. So one wonders why they even bothered...
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 Mar 11 UTC
No, but we do see Obiwan and Yoda both transcend their physical forms in Ep 5 and Anakin at the end of Ep 6. Of course, I'm one of those who remembers (and has a bootleg copy of) the original theatrical release of Star Wars without the "Episode 4" at the beginning, so Lucas is good at revisionist history. And I've heard plenty of lame "the force was strong with Leia too so she has memories of her mother that Luke doesn't even though mom died when they were just minutes or hours old" bull.
Shevek (107 D)
23 Mar 11 UTC
That is true, but it was a retcon created during the prequel era. The original concept of the Whills as intergalactic historians predates the original movie.
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 Mar 11 UTC
I also found this in reference to the Whills.

The Whills kept a collection of stories, called the Journal of the Whills, that chronicled the history of the galaxy.[3] A Keeper of the Whills was responsible for adding new information into it. One such Keeper was told the story of the Skywalker family's exploits during the Clone Wars and the Galactic Civil War, by the Astromech droid R2-D2 one hundred years after the Battle of Endor.

But that doesn't explain the "galaxy far far away" as the Whills were clearly from the galaxy of the Star Wars story line. So "A long time ago in a galaxy far far away" only partly makes sense from the Whills point of view.
Shevek (107 D)
23 Mar 11 UTC
One interpretation could be that the Whills were not a species from the same galaxy as the one Star Wars is set in. Another interpretation is that the Whills transmitted their history to us.

Since Turkey is called Turkey and has borders more reminiscent of Turkey than the 1901 Ottomans, I'd say have Attaturk as the Turkey head.
Draugnar (0 DX)
23 Mar 11 UTC
Of course all of this is a moot point because we were talking about having our nicks be real military leaders, not ones pulled from the over active imagination of a then 30 something who never really grew up.
Onar (131 D)
23 Mar 11 UTC
In that case, could I be Bismarck?
"Beat Poles until they lose faith in a sense of living. Personally, I pity the situation they're in. However, if we want to survive - we've got only one option - to exterminate them." -Bismarck

Syrian Protests
The government in Syria has fired on protesters. I severely doubt Syria will degenerate into what Libya is today. Iran/Hezbollah and a strong military will probably cull any protest remaining after Assad's reforms and Western nations are in no place to intervene (nor perhaps will the U.S. want to destabilize an Iraqi/Israeli neighbor, albeit in the U.S. eyes a bad neighbor). What do you all think this will do to the region if anything?
