GFDT - Account sitter needed!
Actually, now that Hyperactive Jam mentions it...I will need someone to sit my account beginning April 17th to the 20th.

I somehow made the finals for the Grand Festive Diplomacy Tournament. The final round starts April 13th (Thanks thewonderllama!) and I will be gone during the aforementioned period.

Any takers?

My only stipulation is...well, hell, I can't really think of one. How will I choose? I don't know...you tell me.

Game ending messages
Kestas - Can you add a link to the game in the Gamemaster messages that appear in the forum about winning/losing that game. I frequently want to check out the final board but I have to scroll through the Finished Game tab to search for my game.

Larger text area
If you don't like the small text area for communicating with other players in games, you may like the user style sheet that makes it much larger (about 10 rows high).

Multiple Accounts
Is it alright for me to create a second account so that I can play more games at once, provided I never have both accounts join the same game?

Please don't waste anyone's time by turning this into a discussion about cheating or metagaming. I just want a simple answer to a simple question.

Kestas: possible metagaming, pls look
Hey, Kestas,

Pls, check players Kenneth I and muddyhell for metagaming.

Muddyhell has played all games only with Kenneth I. They log on in the same time also. You may look this game for example: http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=3190

PS. I'm not going to blame friends, who may play the same game. But I would like to be sure, that the game is fair.

Thank you!

Ethics
I'm trying to jump on the metagaming/multi-accounting bandwagon here, but is it ok to create multiple accounts to essentially play a game with yourself to win more points?

Player Farcus189 accounts for half his wins and more than half his points this way. http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=2729

Meta-gaming
Sure its a big thing, but a huge problem with ppl trying to catch them is that they find it where there isnt anything at all. All the sudden a simple alliance or backstab becomes this huge meta-gaming scheme, and I hate meta-gamers as much as the next player, but make sure that it is actually meta-gaming before you shoot your mouth off.

Does anyone remember: can a fleet on one coast support a fleet attacking from the other coast to a bi-coastal territory. Example: Can Gulf of Bothnia support a Barrents Sea attack on St. Petersburg? Is the answer to my question the same for both official rules and for phpDip?

Help for the colorblind!
Any chance we can shade the color of Austria and Germany a little different? I am colorblind (the actual term is color-deficient) and I have tremendous difficulty telling those two apart. The rest of the colors are fine.

If 10% of the male population is colorblind, I can't be the only one that has this problem.

Too many serious threads currently dominating the forum. I'm all for a good debate every once in a while but the last few weeks have been grueling.

So now we're going to play the desert island game. You're stranded on a desert island (with electricity and other amenities). What book, movie, and album do you have with you?

Book: The World According to Garp by John Irving
Movie: Superbad
Album: "Discovery" by Daft Punk

Punctuality is a virtue.

I agree though, there should be variable time limits.
fwancophile (164 D)

punctuality is NOT a virtue - talk about nonsense. only the liberal multicultural PC fascists could view punctuality as a virtue. 'vee must bee on time so zat we can BAN ZE CIGARETTES SIEG HEIL'

figlesquidge (2131 D)

I am strongly in favour of 25hr turns, and I have nothing against 36, but that should be an option not a default. 25 would allow you to get onto the PC at aproximately the same time the next day without missing the turn
fwancophile (164 D)
29 Mar 08 UTC
yes but some people do not adhere to these strictly regimented schedules and need the more day-and-a-half view to get by =p
OFFLineLT (316 D)

ya 36 hrs sounds good.
Syrox (2098 D)
29 Mar 08 UTC
Come on guys, if we allow you to have 36 turns, you will ask for 48 hours! 24 is enough!
fwancophile (164 D)
29 Mar 08 UTC
its not just a number, its a thing - a day is a thing, and sometimes there is not the time in the day - apparently - to get here and do the turn?

by the way, some very esteemed people do not believe in promptness. in some senses, we need to europeanize this motherfucker like its italy.
Chrispminis (916 D)
29 Mar 08 UTC
I'm all for 36 hours. But a variable time limit is probably the most humane way to bring about such a change. There are some people who like playing really fast games, I know that there has been some effort made to co-ordinate the play of an entire game in a single weekend. There are also some people who play more in tune with the old postal Diplomacy, by e-mail, or by long term F2F, where the turn lengths are much longer, months in some postal games.

I still think that people do too little Diplomacy, and people are too quick to hit the finalize button after entering their orders for the first time. Take your time, negotiate with everyone, make sure you know exactly what you want to do. I personally don't finalize and let the 24 hours run on, for these and other reasons.
dangermouse (5551 D)
29 Mar 08 UTC
Forcing the turn limit above 24 hours would be a bad idea. It just extends the time that 6 players sit waiting for the 7th to go into CD.

I agree that oftentimes players don't converse enough and Finalize but I don't think that extending the turn time will really get people to talk more.
Noodlebug (1812 D)
29 Mar 08 UTC
There's two points to be made here.

1. A turn runs 24 hours, true, but it's 24 hours from the last person to finalise. If you go online and place your orders at the very start of a turn, then don't finalise, in effect you have 48 hours before you need to return to the computer, possibly longer if there are retreat/build phases you're not involved in. So unless you are leaving it to the last minute to enter your orders every turn, you do have more than 24 hours.

2. Aren't you putting more pressure on yourself by playing in 8 or more games at once? If there is going to be a delay and you know you're going to be cutting it fine, you'll have to enter 8 sets of orders before the deadline.
fwancophile (164 D)

nah i have plenty of time but sometimes my time is taken from and given to me in chunks that do not neatly fit into the 24/48 hour window :-/
canute (0 DX)

variable from 12 to 36 would be good. If this can't be done, then i think that 24is sufficient.
crimson (501 D)
29 Mar 08 UTC
Variable at game creation time, maybe increments of 6 hours to allow for a genuinely fast game (6) to a leisurely (weekly)!
canute (0 DX)
29 Mar 08 UTC
sounds good
Raga (140 D)
29 Mar 08 UTC
24 is a good standard time, because as said before, it can actually be turned into a 48 time-span by updating your orders and not finalizing.

However, i would also like to see variable time limits availiable at game creation. There should be a range, like crimson suggested, to keep people from making games with ridiculously short or long time spans.
Davetroll (100 D)
29 Mar 08 UTC
I think it depends on the person starting the game- give the option of say 12, 24, 36, and 48 at the creation, and ensure that people are aware of the turn time before joining. Then you can join a game that reflects the amount of time you have to play.
spinebag (337 D)
31 Mar 08 UTC
I agree with the post above. The solution is easy - the game creator should be able to specify the number of hours for the move deadline, anywhere from 1-99, say. In fact, this solution is already in place on Facebook. Facebook is loathsome, but at least that dude figured out how to allow for peoples' different needs with respect to move deadlines.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
31 Mar 08 UTC
It's not hard to do spinebag, but it does increase the server load and database size. I do still agree however, and I have a detailed view on how it could be implemented, which would allow you to have non-weekend games etc, allowing for people who go away from internet connections then
spinebag (337 D)
31 Mar 08 UTC
You're right, of course, I wasn't thinking about the added load on the server. I suspect that it would also increase participation which would, in turn, increase demand on the server. These are good problems to have, so I look forward to the day when Kestas feels that the site is ready for these updates.
It would be harder to set up possibly, but it would be nice to have an option of determining move time limits when setting up a game. If someone wants a 12hr time limit, then great. You could also choose 24hr, 36hr, and 48hr time limits. For those who want to try to complete a game in one day, maybe a 1hr time limit could be an option. As for myself, I would be intrigued by a 24hr time limit game with no orders due on weekends.

What the hell, I opened this thread in another tab and the new thread I was trying to create wound up as a response here.

Back on-topic: Me and my group would really appreciate being able to set the order time limit. While just being able to change the 24 hr to something else would be nice (and presumably easy to implement) an even better solution would be to also allow setting a specific time when orders are due each day/week/month, such as "spring orders by 5:00 Tues, fall by 5:00 Thurs".
keeper0018 (100 D)
01 Apr 08 UTC
i agree with fwancophile, 36 hours instead of 24 would be great.
Brutorix (100 D)
01 Apr 08 UTC
I like the current 24 because if you log on once every 24 hours and put in all your moves you will never miss a turn. Once a day is reasonable for most people.

Although - options, options, options, makes much more people happy. I would enjoy a 12 hour game as well.
mapleleaf (0 DX)

Wombat (722 D)

I'm for the current 24 hour as well. I'm busy myself but I always make sure I squeeze in time to move at night/linch etc.

Although I feel that Figle's suggestion of 25 hour tiem pohases would be brill.
