Supporting a convoy
hey guys! I'm sure this has been asked in the forum before (however I am unable to figure out how to search the archives so I'll ask it again).

I recently had my army at Belgium move to English Sea by convoy, the Fleet in English Sea convoy from Belgium to London, and the Fleet in Wales support move English Sea to London (I couldn't tell it to support move from Belgium to London). It said the unit it was giving support to couldn't accept it.

How should I have wrote this order for it to work? From what I understand of the game I should have been able to do this... in the end my move failed because the convoy wasn't supported. Any help would be appreciated.

Some Newbie phpDip questions
Hey all, i'm working on my first game and I have a couple simple questions that I don't see answered in the FAQ:

1. What are the criteria for a country to be put up for username transfer? Is it a choice where you can say "I want out of this game, can someone take my spot?" or is it based on inactivity?

2. Exactly how do the turn phases work? Is it 24 hours per season, or 24 hours to make orders then 24 hours to figure out retreats etc? If one player does not log in during the alloted turn phase do there armies all "hold" and the game proceeds without them?

3. With placing moves, if you have put in commands but not clicked the "finalize" button yet, will they be executed when the turn is up or will the game consider you to have just not put in orders at all and hold all your units?

4. What does the (x) with a red X mean after players names in a game?

Anyway i think thats all of my newbie questions so far, thanks for the help :)

YOUR "Best of 2007"
Whats your favorite phpDiplomacy moment of 2007?

Did you pull off a brilliant stab that you tried to tell all your non Dip friends about and they looked at you like you were nuts?

Did you vote 5 times in a row for Bismark to be the best historical diplomacy player, or vandalize Khan's wikipedia article to say that he was? (Ok, so maybe this should be listed under worst of 07)

Or was your favorite Dip moment a particularly compelling argument you or another player made in game?

My favorite moment came when I logged in to see the following message from Signalseven:

"Support me from Budapest to Trieste or I'll slit your eyelids open sideways." (As a side note, I did support him and eventually he won the game. Who says violence isn't the answer?)

So whats YOUR favorite phpDip moment from 2007?

supports/dislodges
i believe this topic has come up lately. there is some dispute on whether or not the rules adjudicator here properly judges supports, if i am not mistaken?

for example, you have two nations opposing one another in the med. one has fleets in tunis, ionian, rome & naples. the other has fleets in north africa, tyrrenhian & western med. one nation stages an attack on tunis with north africa & western med. tunis is defended with ionian. rome & naples take the tyrrenhian.

what, in your opinion, should happen? is tunis taken, or defended?

does the support for tunis hold because the supporting unit was not dislodged, or does the support fall because it was attacked? was the attack on tyrrenhian called off because the attacking unit displaced, or is this irrelevant?

If you ever see a game, where obviously cheating is going on, don't join it, don't finalize moves and report it to the admin.

# poweron (95) as Italy (Finalized): 5 units

# Satao (90) as Germany (Finalized): 8 units

Plus 4 new accounts opened Wednesday, 11 am.

Seriously though, what enjoyment do these people get from playing multiple accounts? Do they suck THAT bad at the game that this is the only way they can be remotely competitive?

At least in the other game he's playing solo, running all 7 countries.
mightyrobot (202 D)
28 Dec 07 UTC
Seems to be a common problem.

Just tossing out ideas here; but more than IP logging, I think log-in times are better indicator of multi-ing. If accounts joined in the same game, have a history of logging in at nearly the same time, then that should raise a red flag that the accounts are being used by the same person. I don't know what the right values would be to flag this, but my feeling is that "within 5 minutes of each other for four turns in a row" is close. Unfortunately, this wouldn't catch multis very quickly.
Brisreb (152 D)
28 Dec 07 UTC
Why does this issue cause so many problems on this server? Is it to hard just to shrug it off and move on? or at least have a bit more information then a list of log on times and what they definatly mean?

Cause i have issues with this "proof", two issues actualy.

First with the loading times on the page sometimes, have you ever been successfully able to think about and plug in the moves for 8 units in under 60 seconds? then do it Again for 5 in the same amount of time? I havnt, to me this game requires a bit of though and so it takes at least 2 minutes to get all my moves plugged in.

Second, if your proof is that they were all logged in around the same time and made moves, that happens spontaniously, check this out:
gid=2131
# Razz (52) as Turkey (): 1 units
Last logged in: 03:08 PM
# Valathorn (6) as Austria (): 15 units
Last logged in: 03:17 PM
# wawlam59 (2) as England (): 8 units
Last logged in: 03:19 PM

now granted the times arn't as close, but maybe thats because Razz is smart enought to find a way to do this without tipping anyone off?

OR, its 3 DIFFERENT PEOPLE.

Now i have read thru the FAQ, and the Help section here, neither state that if these are teh same people that they cant do what they might be doing.

So, live and learn, if u dont want to play with them, dont, or if you end up in a game with them, find a quick ally and fry one. In the end stop cluttering up the forum with these finger pointing, whines to the admins about a precieved slight against you in all your diplomatic glory. If its broken, they'll fix it, posting 3 times a day about it wont make them fix it any faster, its just annoying.

I'm sure this has been noted before, but it seems to me that the points system has made the multis thrive on a specific group.

This is based on the fact that most people who post complaining about multis have relatively few points, meaning they cannot join very high profile games. The games that im normally involved with that have a larger buy-in never have noticable multi-accounters.

I think that the points system has compressed the multis into a specific group, whereas before we were all effected slightly by multis now players with less than about 500 points have to deal with all the multis and the points-rich players do not.

There doesnt seem an obvious way to combat this but it seems unfair that what are probably very good quality new players have to deal with this problem alone, i think that eventually it could make people less willing to play properly and force more and more people to become multi-accounters. I guess its just something we will have to deal with.
jasperleeabc (100 D)

Yes, but seems that we have no way to solve this problem.

"There doesnt seem an obvious way to combat this"
[Dusts off tired old suggestion.] How about returning to the old system? aoe3rule's created a list of reliable players, a process that did not involve finger-pointing etc, just players vouching for others that they have played with who are reliable. My thinking was that one could create password protected games and invite 5 people from the list and one person not on the list.

Brisreb, there's certainly more to it than just the login times .. the other players in the game were complaining of it because of the suspicious play before I took over the CD country; the join dates of the 2nd and 3rd accounts being the same day, the join dates of the 4th-7th accounts being the same hour of the same day ..

I posted here out of courtesy to let others know if they see those account names in games, and more specifically because i totally fail to understand the reasoning .... WHY would anyone do it? Is there some satisfaction to be gained from it? Is it because they don't understand the game and are trying to learn? I'm more interested in delving into the psychology of it.
Brisreb (152 D)

Razz, its been tryed. Trust me, i use to plan on here on a different account before the summer and at the time this issue really did bug me. So i'd post rants and comments and discussions about it on here, and in the end, it amounted to nothing other then headaches.

I am not saying i have anything against you mate, far from it. Just that through observation, posting stuff on here that names names and points fingers does nothing more then aggrivate the situation and cause people to get upset and as another post near this one called Bye Bye illustrates, cause people to quit because they can't play in a game without getting teamed up on because of suspected multi accounting.

To me this just shows that this is not the way this should be delt with, and another way needs to be found.

Till a form of reporting program can be made, or thought up, i'd just rather these accusation posts were replaced by something else. I dont know what, but all i know is that this way of doing it doesn't help..

You really think we are the same person.. I can not prof that we are different people. Lll I can say is, wait until the end on the game.
But...we are also playing together in other game (Still time) and on that game you can see clearly that we are not the same person.
The main problem is that the game have a password.. So you have to ask to admin... I think....

Php Diplomacy: New Years' Resolutions
New Years Eve (my birthday!) is approaching, ladies and gents, so what do we want a s a resolution/wish list for next year?

Me:

1. Some kind of policy against cheaters. It don't hink that they should be banned immediately the first time, but there has to be SOMETHING done. I think that they should have to be docked down to 50 points the first time and lose a rank, the second time down to 10 and go back to being a
"political puppet", and then they should be banned. But that's just me.

2. Official Monthly Voting Threads, kind of like a Congress. We could either all go, or elect representatives, or maybe you'd need a certain quality (number of games, number of hours, number of points, wins, rank, etc.). That way, maybe we could adress these issues better, and come up with coordinated ideas more often. Notice of date of meeting would also be nice. Kinda leads to my next idea.........

3. MORE TOUNAMENTS! The First Grand Diplomacy Tournament was fun for me (though I was bounced VERY quickly- I was poor Austria next to Rait in Turkey!), so let's try to have more.

4. 1 annual playoff-style tourney where EVERYONE plays. That one's a bit ambitious, and maybe not fully fleshed out, but a an annual title game and playoffs would be fun, I think. Maybe someone can refine this idea a bit.......

Shalom, mein khavers, and Happy New Year- and Birthday!

Supporting a convoy
If I have two fleets surrounding a territory, and one convoys an army to that territory, can the other fleets support that move? I tried that, and I think it was interpreted as supporting the fleet moving in. I took that chance, but to my dismay, it did not go through, and the order was taken as a support for a move that did not happen. Any way to resolve this?

Something I've never seen
I think I'm joining the party who claims that there should be no secondary objectives (like ensuring Yourself a place within the first 3 or similar) in games besides winning the game. I find it pretty unbelievable that 3! corner countries could cooperate against the rest of the countries for 1,5 decades without making a single move against each-other. Not trying to be a sour loser, but this is really amazing. I will comment further after the game is finished, but I simply had to burst out the emotion.

I'm not sure how to successfully support a convoy. FOR EXAMPLE

(this is completely fabricated)

Austrian Army in Warsaw agrees to support.

How would austria designate the order to support Germany's convoyed unit?
