Hey remember when people abandoned games because they had no incentive to continue?
And then we invented the point system and now no one abandons them any more?

Okay, I wasn't around before the point system, but were there even more abandoned games than the 35 I'm looking at now?

Rules governing retreats
Can i just clarify the rules in this version of the game please..... if a unit is forced to retreat it has the option to move to any free adjacent territory? (provided no-one else is trying to move or retreat there)

Even if this means moving further away from your own 'home country', and/or grabbing a supply centre? which could actually be pretty advantageous.

New Game: Ghengis 2
Nothing to do with the voting threads, but I have resurrected the Ghengis game I tried to start last week.

This is a small pot (5 points) but big on communication and diplomatic creativity...

Those who tried to join the first one, the password remains the same:

Who or what defeated the Mongol's in East Asia (one word).

Rait: you wanted to try a small pot game... I hope you can make it.

Greatest LIVING Diplomacy Player - discussion/nominations only
While the GDP Ever thread is reaching it's climax I thought we could get some suggestions as to who might be the best Diplomacy player out of well-known people alive today.

While Rait is an obvious candidate, to avoid things getting personal we should limit it to people who (as far as we know) don't actually play.

Would it be a prominent politician, such as Bush, Blair or Gorbachev? Or someone behind the scenes, like Karl Rove or Peter Mandelson? Or perhaps the field of modern conflict is business, and the transferable skills for empire-building are best demonstrated by the likes of Rupert Murdoch or other major corporate CEOs? Would military strategists like Schwarzkopf and Petreus get a look in? Could renegades (from a Western perspective) like Castro or Bin Laden have what it takes?

This is just a discussion thread, so no voting until we have a result in the other thread. The most talked about (by different people!) candidates will make the shortlist.

Why not Bush? He's obviously up to taking as many SC as possible, while being allied with small time players, and only "annoying" the big timers, like France, Germany, Russia or China. IMHO he's now aimed at the small, neutral, SC, and after that he'll have the upper hand in the case of a conflict with any other big power.

Yeah, without question Henry Kissinger. Nobody did more to extend a hand to 'enemies', promoting realpolitik around the world, and showing a willingness to jump into political 'situations' and extract a solution.

kissinger was a mass murdered & didn't accomplish the intended aims. no way.
i will put holbrooke up for contention, though i don't know if he's number one. i would also put up chalabai - you know, the head of the iraqi congress in exile who apparently was pretty influential in getting support in washington for the invasion of iraq. i would nominate musharraf definitely, for contention. however, i think that there is only one real answer - bill clinton. he masterfully orchestrated the post-cold war position of US leadership. america, with every reason in the world to question the role of a hegemon in global affairs, was loved, promoted global economic development & democratization, stood for human rights rather effectively compared with many other similar periods for a global power. i would have to say of any who would be up for nomination, clinton best followed machiavelli's advice: to be admired as benevolent in a position of overwhelming power.
fwancophile (164 D)

off-topic: Pitirre, don't excuse me, but you are an idiot and that IS the case. He didn't "put Castro and bin Laden like they were of the same political and ideology tendency"(sic). Apart from your accusation being grammatically, syntactically and logically offensive, it is wrong. Noodlebug has it right: "...Could renegades (from a Western perspective) like Castro or Bin Laden..."

I think Vladimir Putin would have to have a place on the list. With his sterling track record in post-Yeltsin (post-U.S.S.R.) of grabbing power from all the right players, removing the powerful opponents and staying on top of the regrowth (rebirth?) of Russia and his recent excellence in keeping all other political parties of Russia out of the presidential and parliamentary elections, I think he would definitely be a contender for finest Diplomacy Player alive.

cri_ned, you make an excellent point.

noodle..."by the west"? is the united states is the "west"? because it is the US goverment who has this view while many (and the majority) wants the embargo to end and start business with cuba.

TOgilvie (845 D)
03 Dec 07 UTC
@ Cri_ned, Bush has squandered the international opinion of the US - one can hardly claim his policies are diplomatic. fwancophile does raise good points concerning Clinton, though I disagree with the perception of Kissinger as a mass-murderer; his endorsement of expedient regimes which allegedly committed genocide was arguably masterful diplomacy. Being the greatest living diplomat and being nice are two very different things.

@ pitirre: Noodlebug's assessment is bang-on. Cuba and Bin Laden are viewed by renegades in the western world, because like it or not the United States does 'rule' the first world. Noodlebug never said they had the same ideology. Consider that Bin Laden fought Communism in Afghanistan at the behest of 'the west'.

Are we allowed ' the future architect of a lasting peace in the Middle East'? I suppose they might not be alive yet.

It might not be viewed as impressive by you Non-brits, but how about Tony Blair? He has managed to keep Britain in quite a powerful situation. Now, I am not saying he made a big empire, he didn't. However, he has managed to keep a small island with a vote in the most powerful rooms in the world - the UN, the EU and a good relationship with the US...
I'm not sure myself, i just think he's a possible candidate, and so should be considered. Other idea's include Richard Branson, Murdock as said before. The web has views on several, the most interesting to me was this one :

It depends a lot on how you view the player. If we consider that it's all about land grab (SC's in this case), then you can't clain that Bin Laden or Castro ever gained any SC, or allied with the right party - maybe just before being "backstabbed" by the US. Putin also didn't make any "real" progress to the outside world, since he didn't add anything new to the Russian territory (except let's say the constant tensions put forth in Moldavia and Transnistria or for example Georgia and Chechnya. Also, Putin's concern in the "Caucasus" area, with the promise to Iran that he'll help them build their nuclear reactors, and the "Caucasus" alliance, which would mean that if US attacked Iran, Russia would intervene along with the other neighbors of the Caucasus Sea. I think the diplomatic relations that face the world now can be viewed not as SC conquering, but as backstabbing and uneasy alliances.
TOgilvie (845 D)
03 Dec 07 UTC
If we scale up the SCs of the board to the real world, that makes about 100 countries needed to gain enough SCs. Bush is a long way from victory.

if you want to argue then use a clear definition; "ruler of the 1rst world" and "west" is NOT the same thing and that is my point. You could not implied (unless you are an idiot) that bin laden are viewed by the west as "whatever" when you mean is by the US goverment.
fwancophile (164 D)

heh i don't view blair as all bad. i think he was great - when the us was at its worst he put the US-UK alliance (no doubt one of the most important alliances in the world) ahead of what was right, as well as politically expedient for domestic politics.

which is why I included Castro in my suggestions. Remember, he didn't start out as a Marxist, if anything he was forced into that pigeonhole by political expediency. To take and then keep a communist country on the USA's doorstep for 50 years takes some sort of strategic genius.

2. George W. Bush (He has enough centers, and no doubt he's an important figure.)
3. Castro (I'm disgusted, but he IS up there.)
4. Ahmedinejad (Now I'm REALLY disgusted, I hope Olmert nukes Tehran and him back to the Stone Age.)
5. Putin (One minute he's peaceful, the next it's the Cold War all over again.)

what happened to kissinger on the shortlist? my second vote would go to ariel sharon, because it seems to me diplomacy is more of a politics and military warefar game that doesnt include economics or other factors. sharon was a honored general and political leader, where as strong players like clinton or hu jintao understood/stand the importance of economics in the world...although you could consider that a part of diplomacy

I'm at a loss here.

The simple fact is that most of the people I admire are gone.

I certainly wouldn't vote for Clinton. I have had this debate numerous times before - the one about how good he is at public speaking. Well, charisma maybe, good at the humerous quip maybe, but can anyone here remember the substance of any of his speeches? He didn't have a dream, and he didn't ask what he could do etc...

The same goes for his term in office. He is better known for White Water and white stains than anything else. Camp David was a brave attempt but an ultimate disappointment.

Kissenger though was the role model for diplomacy in his time, I suppose that gets him some serious credit - and he fronted for a crook, that must help too.

Not sure why Nelson Mandella hasn't at least been cited... There is a man the world listened to.

Are we ranking Diplomacy Players by how well they would hypothetically play the game Diplomacy? Or how well they figuratively play Diplomacy, but in the real world? Because I believe most people are responding to the latter...

It's disappointing that only politicians are really mentioned, when I would question whether politicians would even make the best Diplomacy players, especially with their reputations, would you ever trust them? (Forgive the meta-gaming =P)

For non-politicians, and in terms of hypothetical skill at playing Diplomacy as a game, and not on the hypothetical board of the world... I choose, in no particular order :

-Richard Dawkins, because he's pretty damn eloquent in the face of adversity, and with such a soothing manner.
-Arnold Schwarzenegger, he could probably "persuade" most people.
-Robert Cialdini (sp?), because he's spent his entire life studying persuasion and negotiation, so I'd hope that he knows what he's doing...
Noodlebug (1812 D)
03 Dec 07 UTC
The question is who would be the greatest living Diplomacy player, so I think it's more hypothetical than directly relating to their achievements in the great Diplomacy game of life. Certainly if your candidates get enough people talking about them they can make the shortlist.

Kissinger, Castro, Bush Jr and Blair seem to be generating the most heat so far. But I am sure there are other candidates who have not been mentioned yet. George Mitchell, for reconciling the irreconcilable? Margaret Thatcher, for both bold military moves and handbag diplomacy? Lech Walesa for bringing down the Soviet Bloc? Silvio Berlusconi for both his business empire and for creating a new party and taking it to power in Italy? They are all clearly very persuasive and determined people...

I am personally quite fond of Tony Blair, although i would not vote for his party i think that he made a pretty good job of handling what were very, very difficult situations....he also brought peace to Ireland which may seem insignificant to non-brits but was viewed as quite an achievement over here.

I would also say that either the Queen or Prince Charles have handled diplomacy very well, bringing a touch of class to otherwise sticky and toxic situations...while they are not elected representatives they nevertheless act as Britains envoys to the world and i think they have both done a bloody good job.
TOgilvie (845 D)

@Chrisminis: Shome mishtake shurely? Arnie *is* a politician.

@Locke: the Royals haven't exactly done much directly, but in presiding over the Commonwealth their contribution has been valuable. Look at Pakistan; it gets kicked out the club and Mr Musharaf steps down as general, promises to end emergency rule. That's influence that money can't buy.

Kasparov would probably make a good Dip player. After all, he's got the game theory, and now the political skills.
figlesquidge (2131 D)

I agree that there is a definate difference between the 3 topic in this thread:
1) Best application of diplomacy in real life (most SC's etc)
2) Most power in real life
3) Would be best diplomacy player

To be honest, I think the best diplomacy player in the world would be one of the unknown US aides - the people who keep their jobs no matter who's in power, and just sit there whispering into the ear of the president, getting their view straight in at the top. Moreover, because we've never heard of them, there's no chance they'd suffer what i'll call the "Rait phenomenon" - the other players wouldn't gang up on him, whereas as long as Blair wasn't playing, I'm not sure Bush would have many starting alliances..!

Noodlebug (1812 D)
04 Dec 07 UTC
Who alive would be the best Diplomacy player, based on their achievements and how they achieved them. The suits behind the scenes are probably excluded on the basis that we don't know enough about them to nominate.
It's exactly the same criteria as the Historical thread, but obviously a lot more difficult as success in the modern world is not simply measured by conquests and "hard" political power, and we are familiar with so many more arenas (politics, business, media, sport). It is hard to argue that Murdoch isn't more powerful than any politician in office, and that the skills he used to build his company, consolidate and expand are exactly the same skills that we use as Diplomacy players - negotiation and strategy.

For example, If I had a army in Norway and fleet in Sweden could I do:

Army Norway move to Sweden
Fleet Sweden move to Norway

And if this is possible assuming no external factors, what would happen if England tried to move a Fleet from North Sea to Norway with NO support?

Grand Festive Diplomacy Tournament
I worry that this is already turning into a farce, because of the seeding system - for instance, the number 2 seed in the whole tournament, Locke, is already out.
There might be more mileage in the following heat system next time:
Heat 1
1, 5, 9, 13, 17, 21, 25
Heat 2
2, 6, 10, 14, 18, 22, 26
Heat 3
3, 7, 11, 15, 19, 23, 27
Heat 4
4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28
Heat 5
29, 32, 35, 38, 41, 44, 47
Heat 6
30, 33, 36, 39, 42, 45, 48
Heat 7
31, 34, 37, 40, 43, 46, 49

Semi Final 1
1A, 2C, 3C, 4A, 5B, 6C, 7A
Semi Final 2
1B, 2B, 3B, 4B, 5C, 6A, 7B
Semi Final 3
1C, 2A, 3A, 4C, 5A, 6B, 7C

Final
1A, 1B, 2A, 2B, 3A, 3B and best third place

This makes sure weaker players can get into the next round, while also assuring plenty of places for established players. What does anyone think?

The Point System
The debate never ends...Does the current point system alter the way the game SHOULD be played? This is arguable, but If the spirit of the game is to always play for the win, then YES!! The current point system changes this by allowing inferior countries plead for survival with the hope that they can retain some points rather then trying to negotiate with other inferior countries in attacking the superior country.

I am guilty of this myself.

But again, if we can agree that the spirit of the game is to always play for the win, here is what I propose:

1) Change the point system to a token system and keep it private.
Points are only be used as an ante to enter games with players of similar caliber...or to keep out players with lesser points.

What if instead of granting new players 100 pts, they are granted 10 GREEN tokens. Games can only be created by using ONE token of whatever color you decide. So, the new player can join up to 10 green token games.

Tokens are only lost if you allow your country to go CD. They are never stripped from you if you lose. But if you win or lose, they change color.

Each win allows you to change the color of ALL of your tokens to the next higher color...say, blue. After each loss, one of your chips will return to the lower color. So, after winning your first game and getting all your chips to turn blue (allowing you to play in blue AND green level games), each game you enter and lose thereafter will change ONE token back to it's lower color. Ten losses and you are left with ten green chips to play in only green level games. You need only one token of ten to be blue to change ALL tokens to the next higher color, say red. Ten losses after attaining your second win and you'll be back down to ten blue tokens...ten more losses and your back down to green.

Each token represents a game that can be played at that color level or lower.

Games are then created based on the hierarchy of color, not points...AND THEY ARE KEPT PRIVATE! No one will know what color your tokens are...they will only see ranks:

2) Show ranks, not points.
Instead of seeing, for example, Rait (8577), let it show Rait (Superior Diplomat). And make these rankings based entirely on WINS and nothing else.

0 wins = political puppet
1 wins = Apprentice
2 wins = Representative
3 wins = Negotiator
4 wins = Statesman
5 wins = Diplomat

Or some such. You could even further break these down into subcategories by using adjectives before the rankings...1 win = Lesser Apprentice, 2 wins = Apprentice, 3 wins = Superior Apprentice....and so on...

Add to this a nifty little color-coded graphic and I believe the dynamic of this game will change from a "I want points" to "I want to win and get my shiny new rank!".

I understand there's a ranking system in place, but as it stands, it's given very little weight.

Keep in mind that once you attain a rank, you can never drop any lower no matter how many games you lose or what color your tokens are.

These are only suggestions and will need some deeper thought as to how it can be improved and/or integrated. And I'm sure Kestas is very busy...perhaps it's even on his to-do list (0.78: Winner-takes-all-games?)

It just seems that every other thread on this forum in some way speaks to the short comings of the point system in relation to "playing to win".

Please discuss...

The long long story so far - around 200 posts so far!
Long Long ago, when the world was just recovering from the great apocalyptic nightmare that gave rise to the wonderllama metagaming! It was because no one had thought to ask whether wonderllama was an actual llama. Apparently he was. No one cared.
"Who just farted?" said the inspector, as he danced the can-can happily.
Deciding to investigate Rait's high score, which wasn't high, but not reputation was an inspiration was simply stopped, so he decided to murder on the case "wonderllama" being a llama!
Fortunately for him, it turned out that wonderllama was really Kestas in a pretty sun-dress disguised with a big cowboy hat and a satin Noel Coward Cravatte, which was stolen by an angry dwarf that can't count, who sold it for magic beans and a young whipper-snapper came along and bit his sister in law (she enjoyed it) because she was most certainly not a good nun. In fact , she was actually a woman known for her ability to get men to digest thousands of giant seedless cherries that turn purple in the sun.
However, when they were eaten by even bigger cherries, they caused great distress among the ecclesiastical community. This meant that a apocalyptic nightmare was affecting the world, until Bush resigned. So I said:
"Hey what's up?"
"The llama's here"
"Or is he?"
A plane crashed into the White House some victims were found eating other with tartar sauce. Many people thought but most didn't correctly assign poodles to the newly resigned Gorilla and that's why we need to learn to love and be happy!
