Hey remember when people abandoned games because they had no incentive to continue?
And then we invented the point system and now no one abandons them any more?

Okay, I wasn't around before the point system, but were there even more abandoned games than the 35 I'm looking at now?

Rules governing retreats
Can i just clarify the rules in this version of the game please..... if a unit is forced to retreat it has the option to move to any free adjacent territory? (provided no-one else is trying to move or retreat there)

Even if this means moving further away from your own 'home country', and/or grabbing a supply centre? which could actually be pretty advantageous.

New Game: Ghengis 2
Nothing to do with the voting threads, but I have resurrected the Ghengis game I tried to start last week.

This is a small pot (5 points) but big on communication and diplomatic creativity...

Those who tried to join the first one, the password remains the same:

Who or what defeated the Mongol's in East Asia (one word).

Rait: you wanted to try a small pot game... I hope you can make it.

fwancophile,

I think we need to sort this out one item at a time, thrust and rebuttal as evidently the myriad evidences pulled up is just ignored or saying something akin to "those sand niggers aren't important, and 200 years of continual occupation is temporary".

So
1. Bismarck in the end lost. Yes he lost, was kicked out of parliament by Wilhelm II. So i put it to you that Wilhelm II was a better diplomacy player in the local arena than Bismarck, although strategically military he was too ambitious.

So rebut that, and make a single thrust against Genghis.

way to put words in my mouth :-/

genghis died at the end of his life - is his inability to beat death an indict against him? i thought we were measuring what each did. in my judgment, the task of putting together a german state in the second half of the 19th century was more difficult than conquering 2/3 of asia in the 13th century. you can imply its racist and perhaps it is - but i could similarly imply you are drawn more to the spectacle of khan's violence than to the demanding subtlety of geopolitics, which admittedly hinges on the choice of just a few words than the saddles and arrows of a hundred thousand horse archers. in other words, in what i view as a more difficult task, bismark accomplished with elegant economy.

and i have put it to you numerous times, genghis khan conquered more via diplomacy than military. Its just that his conquest was so vast, and the reputation he built to intimidate was so violent people get this impression that he murder babies.

I have pointed out that uniting the various mongol tribes was definitely more difficult than uniting the german people. There was already german nationalism due to Napoleon and other vectors (See the map of Prussia prior to unification, and you'll see that the North German Federation was 2/3 Prussia before Bismarck came). And i am only comparing this with mongol unification, not Chinese, Persian, Eastern European Unification.
fwancophile (164 D)

look, ive never said only my view is right. but my view is my view and it is based, not on ignoring the evidence you present, but on my on evaluation of the merits of each. i would strongly disagree that uniting the mongol tribes is more difficult than uniting germany - this is the key point for me. unity of the mongol tribes - not a serious concern for the chinese because mongolia was not perceived to be remotely comparable in terms of power. unity of germany - huge threat as perceived by russia, france & england. moreover, so many obstacles to overcome - austrian domination of germany, the old traditions vigorously held on to, variously, by the free cities and the monarchies, bourgeois industrialists here and feudal heirs there. these were adroitly overcome, as was the strongest german-unity faction, the democrats as well as the socialists. i think given that on the one hand the major external powers ought to have intervened for exactly the reasons that panned out (strong germany dominates europe) AND the none of the internal pan-ists got what they wanted that this is a monumental accomplishment.

khan may have started with nothing, but there was never an outright suspicion to his cause until it was too late. bismark did what nearly all were predisposed against.

I vote for bismark over kahn because i am, unashamedly, a complete 'euro-centric'. I am extremely interested in Europes rich history and am also very proud of our great historical figures, while i do not dismiss the achievements of other nations leaders ( In fact i am very interested in the histories of both china and japan) i am voting for europeans first and foremost because i can personally relate better to what they achieved than Kahn achieved, just as some people are extremely proud of their nations leaders i am proud of my continents figures.

I don't think its fair that some people can 'brand' others facists or racists just because they do not vote in the way those people do, i vote for bismark because i have never been into positive discrimination. There are merits to both bismark and kahn just as there are failings to both and i think that it is unfair to attach a racist stigma to voting for Bismark.

Genghis Khan DID play the Chineese off each other to take over them; it's true. but anyone could have done that. they HATED each other and were just stupid - they didn't see Genghis as a threat, and if we replayed history i think there's probably a 90% chance that he WASN'T. they thought of him as nothing because they were already too distracted and got lucky. but the German states, everything was equal and he really needed a lot of diplomacy.

oh, and using fear is impossible in diplomacy. you can't kill all of the inhabitants of a city so the next one will surrender without a fight. in modern times, that will get everyone to attack you, because they're sensible enough that barbarians are, even when weaker, more dangerous than your enemies. (not that they were always barbarians; i'm just saying they would be seen that way.) even if you took all of our technogical advancements away but left our experiences (not including those from wars with Genghis) and put Genghis Khan in charge of the mongolian soldiers, people would guess that they would do something like what they did and not ignore them until it was too late.

and lastly, the point about his death. Bismarck's achievements lasted after he died - Germany is still a country. Germany lost a lot of territory during/after the world wars, but mongolia lost ALL of the terr

That is exactly why i think Kahn was better - in Germany that proves that it was not Bismarck alone who built the empire. Moreover, it is a legitimate diplomatic strategy to bully people around - once you have the power to do it. Before you have such a large empire, you must be much more tactful i agree, but as has many times been noted, Genghis did all this as well...

Wasn't Germany split up again in 1946? And isn't Mongolia still there, and didn't Ghengis's massive empire split into four independent empires with varying degrees of longevity stretching hundreds of years - not a collapse so much as an evolution into more workable regimes. In terms of legacy, I think Ghenghis's thriving empires surpasses Bismarck's two world wars!

Just because when Khan died and his empire fell apart doesnt mean he was a better diplomat. To keep a country together is a hard task. Bismarck's empire held together. Big accomplishment. Especially with a lot of other powerful nations around him. And also, He didnt lose. He got kicked out, but because of that, his empire decayed. Its just the stupid people around him who really made Germany lose.

+1 Bismarck

I saw above "Alexander was a drunkard!" That just ADDS to his mystique. Mickey Mantle went out, got watsed, and hit a grand slam in the same 24 hours! It just is part of the legend! And think about it: what better way to calm a frazzled allies nerves than by shaing a nice martini, shaken not stirred? :p

The reason, also, that everyone take asway the Mongolian artillery is because we want a chess game- everything equal for each opponent, to see who the true master is. Sure, if Hitler had his Panzers, he could beat any of these guys, but come on- do you REALLY think Hitler, the evily great blitzer but horrid tactical man (look at his hand in Stalingrad, and I rest my case) could out-wit Alexander in battle? The undefeated Alexander THE GREAT!? Or MIGHTY Caesar? THE WRATH of Khan?! (I know wrong Khan and it's like the third time I've used the pun, but Trek's Khan and the real one just click so well.) Even NAPOLEON, my hero, wh made the SAME RUSSIAN MISTAKE, had more of a vision than Hitler. So, point being, a monkey could win with superior forces (see Benito Mussolini early on), but at even levels, the true masters shine.

That said, Khan's empire was still MUCH more successful than Bismark- he should have left 2nd, after Machiavelli. But Alexander's empire not only preserved the Greek half of Western roots (th other half being Hebrew/Judaic- yay Jews!), it served, HE served as the ultimate model for another man, another empire. I dare you to try and tell me that if Alexander does not rise, does not inspire Rome, and later Caesar, that the Roman Empire would have been the same. It still may have formed, may have even still have taken Italy. But NO WAY could Rome have won the Punic Wars had not the tactical lessons from the Campaign not been learned. Alexander was VASTLY outnumbered; the Romans were VASTLY over-matched by the elephants. But Alexander showed that a disciplined army CAN win, no matter the size, and he is one of the first military leaders to defy size and strength and win on discipline. Early on, Rome did.

So, if I can vote again (I have no idea if there's a limit, everyone has gone multiple times I think):

+1 Alexander
-1 Bismark

Greatest LIVING Diplomacy Player - discussion/nominations only
While the GDP Ever thread is reaching it's climax I thought we could get some suggestions as to who might be the best Diplomacy player out of well-known people alive today.

While Rait is an obvious candidate, to avoid things getting personal we should limit it to people who (as far as we know) don't actually play.

Would it be a prominent politician, such as Bush, Blair or Gorbachev? Or someone behind the scenes, like Karl Rove or Peter Mandelson? Or perhaps the field of modern conflict is business, and the transferable skills for empire-building are best demonstrated by the likes of Rupert Murdoch or other major corporate CEOs? Would military strategists like Schwarzkopf and Petreus get a look in? Could renegades (from a Western perspective) like Castro or Bin Laden have what it takes?

This is just a discussion thread, so no voting until we have a result in the other thread. The most talked about (by different people!) candidates will make the shortlist.

Can your own units swap place on the board?
For example, If I had a army in Norway and fleet in Sweden could I do:

Army Norway move to Sweden
Fleet Sweden move to Norway

And if this is possible assuming no external factors, what would happen if England tried to move a Fleet from North Sea to Norway with NO support?

Grand Festive Diplomacy Tournament
I worry that this is already turning into a farce, because of the seeding system - for instance, the number 2 seed in the whole tournament, Locke, is already out.
There might be more mileage in the following heat system next time:
Heat 1
1, 5, 9, 13, 17, 21, 25
Heat 2
2, 6, 10, 14, 18, 22, 26
Heat 3
3, 7, 11, 15, 19, 23, 27
Heat 4
4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28
Heat 5
29, 32, 35, 38, 41, 44, 47
Heat 6
30, 33, 36, 39, 42, 45, 48
Heat 7
31, 34, 37, 40, 43, 46, 49

Semi Final 1
1A, 2C, 3C, 4A, 5B, 6C, 7A
Semi Final 2
1B, 2B, 3B, 4B, 5C, 6A, 7B
Semi Final 3
1C, 2A, 3A, 4C, 5A, 6B, 7C

Final
1A, 1B, 2A, 2B, 3A, 3B and best third place

This makes sure weaker players can get into the next round, while also assuring plenty of places for established players. What does anyone think?

I am curious about people's winning percentage. AKA Number of games won over number of games not won (lost= come in second or worse).

The Point System
The debate never ends...Does the current point system alter the way the game SHOULD be played? This is arguable, but If the spirit of the game is to always play for the win, then YES!! The current point system changes this by allowing inferior countries plead for survival with the hope that they can retain some points rather then trying to negotiate with other inferior countries in attacking the superior country.

I am guilty of this myself.

But again, if we can agree that the spirit of the game is to always play for the win, here is what I propose:

1) Change the point system to a token system and keep it private.
Points are only be used as an ante to enter games with players of similar caliber...or to keep out players with lesser points.

What if instead of granting new players 100 pts, they are granted 10 GREEN tokens. Games can only be created by using ONE token of whatever color you decide. So, the new player can join up to 10 green token games.

Tokens are only lost if you allow your country to go CD. They are never stripped from you if you lose. But if you win or lose, they change color.

Each win allows you to change the color of ALL of your tokens to the next higher color...say, blue. After each loss, one of your chips will return to the lower color. So, after winning your first game and getting all your chips to turn blue (allowing you to play in blue AND green level games), each game you enter and lose thereafter will change ONE token back to it's lower color. Ten losses and you are left with ten green chips to play in only green level games. You need only one token of ten to be blue to change ALL tokens to the next higher color, say red. Ten losses after attaining your second win and you'll be back down to ten blue tokens...ten more losses and your back down to green.

Each token represents a game that can be played at that color level or lower.

Games are then created based on the hierarchy of color, not points...AND THEY ARE KEPT PRIVATE! No one will know what color your tokens are...they will only see ranks:

2) Show ranks, not points.
Instead of seeing, for example, Rait (8577), let it show Rait (Superior Diplomat). And make these rankings based entirely on WINS and nothing else.

0 wins = political puppet
1 wins = Apprentice
2 wins = Representative
3 wins = Negotiator
4 wins = Statesman
5 wins = Diplomat

Or some such. You could even further break these down into subcategories by using adjectives before the rankings...1 win = Lesser Apprentice, 2 wins = Apprentice, 3 wins = Superior Apprentice....and so on...

Add to this a nifty little color-coded graphic and I believe the dynamic of this game will change from a "I want points" to "I want to win and get my shiny new rank!".

I understand there's a ranking system in place, but as it stands, it's given very little weight.

Keep in mind that once you attain a rank, you can never drop any lower no matter how many games you lose or what color your tokens are.

These are only suggestions and will need some deeper thought as to how it can be improved and/or integrated. And I'm sure Kestas is very busy...perhaps it's even on his to-do list (0.78: Winner-takes-all-games?)

It just seems that every other thread on this forum in some way speaks to the short comings of the point system in relation to "playing to win".

Please discuss...

The long long story so far - around 200 posts so far!
Long Long ago, when the world was just recovering from the great apocalyptic nightmare that gave rise to the wonderllama metagaming! It was because no one had thought to ask whether wonderllama was an actual llama. Apparently he was. No one cared.
"Who just farted?" said the inspector, as he danced the can-can happily.
Deciding to investigate Rait's high score, which wasn't high, but not reputation was an inspiration was simply stopped, so he decided to murder on the case "wonderllama" being a llama!
Fortunately for him, it turned out that wonderllama was really Kestas in a pretty sun-dress disguised with a big cowboy hat and a satin Noel Coward Cravatte, which was stolen by an angry dwarf that can't count, who sold it for magic beans and a young whipper-snapper came along and bit his sister in law (she enjoyed it) because she was most certainly not a good nun. In fact , she was actually a woman known for her ability to get men to digest thousands of giant seedless cherries that turn purple in the sun.
However, when they were eaten by even bigger cherries, they caused great distress among the ecclesiastical community. This meant that a apocalyptic nightmare was affecting the world, until Bush resigned. So I said:
"Hey what's up?"
"The llama's here"
"Or is he?"
A plane crashed into the White House some victims were found eating other with tartar sauce. Many people thought but most didn't correctly assign poodles to the newly resigned Gorilla and that's why we need to learn to love and be happy! Anyway, tasty teddy bears are always gummy, and full of that special sauce that makes children sometimes violently explode in the most spontaneous and random clothing. Meanwhile, in Vienna, their tarts were caught sniffing the newly discovered crisp mini S and being arrested for flagrant disregard and recklessly ignoring the toxic smell.
Figlesquidge just discovered (I think a Nobel Prize for Literature may be on the corner) Noodlebug can't count.
Someone once said, "Long ago, when the earth was pink. The wonderlama was found drunk whilst driving a stolen pink camper-van into eclectic nightmares that didn't need a banjo to make them terrifying". Suddenly, he abdomen did nothing unexpected, merely digested food.
The wonderllama said, "Strike a light, because I'm bored."
At the same time, a dark illegal poodle cartel, so dark that light got scared and dropped the macrowave converter in the open exhaust port decided Poodle Soup was the best at making no one happy so had fish instead. What a shame, he almost died, missing his next reincarnation and causing a global crisis over the amount of microwave popcorn companies missing poodles.
Alternatively, one could argue that Rabbit McNuggets taste disgusting unless seasoned with Pickled Essence of sassafras, with a hint of rosemary and thyme and family jewels. Once digested, these Rabbit McNuggets make you pregnant with little rabbits that, at age 5, aggressively ferment into Rayman Raving Rabbids, with powers that these days are considered too weak for Wii. In Serbia, people despise rabbit McNuggets & don't have rabbit at all.
Meanwhile, TOgilvie thought that phpdiplomacy was stupid, but it wasn't. Quite the opposite; it really was: poodles, poodles and more poodles: Absurd! Or so he ranted. Now why?
"Because he's a llama", said Gobbledydook, "A llama that can't spit is just a camel."
Of course, that wasn't enough for him to excoriate the Wonderllama's hide. Instead he jumped on the legendary Dangermouse for a little
