The best thing ever!
The forum is getting awfully depressing and argumentative lately. It needs more puppies interrupting professional soccer games:

Book publishing
I am currently writing a book entitled "The Nature of Survivalism" which is a philosophical treatise regarding the future of nations and a contextual look at how politics came to exist. I have written about 23,000 words so far and have in mind to finish at about 80,000.

The book is essentially a look at evolutionary context similar to social Darwinism in order to draw conclusions about the nature and mandate of government, economic and ethical theory etc, and to paint a picture of the future of globalization and ecological challenges that we will face in the future as well as possible solutions.

Unfortunately I have struggled to obtain any academic feedback on this work so far and am in a bit of a lull state as to knowing whether I am heading in the right direction, whether this is publishable and how to adjust my writing. At this 1/4 mark or so, I would very much like a professional critique of my progress to mull over as I continue writing.

Do any of you have any experience of these sorts of things, or perhaps you know a publisher? Do you know an academic who would have the time to go over this briefly with me? Any suggestions?

Do you have a Ph.D. already? If not, you might find an academic working in a related field and approach him about doing this as your Ph.D. thesis with him. That is the job of an advisor, whereas doing it for a complete stranger might be more than most people want to do. (Of course, you should probably look into his program's requirements first. It would be preferable if you weren't stuck taking courses for years, unless you think you would find them helpful).
Usually publishers want to see a more limited successful work before they publish an epic book that discusses how politics came to exist and reads the future from a crystal ball. Publishing a paper outlying your philosophical theory first is probably the right way to go. Then again if its a crackpot as it sounds (you probably want to leave out any mention of social Darwinism) no amount of prior credibility will be able to save it.

"Do you have a Ph.D. already? If not, you might find an academic working in a related field and approach him about doing this as your Ph.D. thesis with him."

thats a 5-7 year commitment
Just fyi, your description made it sound like a companion piece for the Turner Diaries

"thats a 5-7 year commitment "

True (depending on his background/what degree he already has/how his field works), but then, as you point out, this sounds like a work of extreme ambition, so that might not be so bad.

One thing -- you might want to leave out the chapter on how rape is morally equivalent to arson.
eh I take that back, a bit too harsh

It's a lot more liberal and forward-thinking than my description probably sounded. When I say that it's similar to social Darwinism, I mean the writing of it is put out like Rousseau's A Discourse on the Nature of Inequality, by looking at theories of natural social interactions and placing them in political context (not that it promotes Dawkin-esque competition or anything, sorry for that).

If all else fails, call the book, "Sex on the Veld (and What it Means for the Future)." Somebody will pick it up.

80,000 words is hardly epic. It's only 150 or so pages. 500 words per page is typical in published form.
epic in scope draugnar.

"Unfortunately I have struggled to obtain any academic feedback"

You won't get any of that unless you're part of the club. Thankfully, now that we are in the internet age, there is no shortage of options to get around the university presses and big publishing mills to get published. I believe Amazon has some system where you can self-publish - books are printed on demand and you get a cut of the money Amazon makes off selling your book - but I'm not sure about the details. I'm sure there are many other options in this day and age as well - publishing and selling an e-book, for instance.

And if you want to just get your point of view out there and don't care about making any money, it costs about $10/month to simply post your book to a self-made website.
tolstoy's personal failures aside. If you want an academic to read your work, hang out where academics hang out and make some friends.

Thanks Tolstoy, I have considered self-publishing as an option. What I'm looking for at the moment is some direction. As I say, I've written about one quarter and need some pointers as to which areas are well-written, which are not, which areas I need to develop on etc. I really feel as though I don't know which direction I'm heading in.

Athiests, Christians, Monty Python fans and debaters alike - you must watch this clip!
This is an interview with John Cleese and Michael Palin after the release of "Life of Brian" and it is fucking brilliant. I absolutely love the way the educated English can sound so civil while hurling insults at each other. Al Swearington would be proud! It's refreshing to see 4 people argue with eachother so brilliantly, humorously and politely

Welfare States
I know the positives... I've thought about it for ages. According to all of you, thinking optimistically while maintaining a realistic view on what I can get is naive. So what's the negative that I apparently don't get about socialism or corporatism? They're bad words to each other, but what's so bad about either?
