Still haven't really stabbed...
So after a few weeks on this site I posted a forum thread about reliability issues after stabbing, possibly even carrying on outside the game. Months later, I still haven't really stabbed anyone, except in situations where I had already been stabbed myself.

I see them coming all the time though. The "yes" or "okay" after a deal generally means "No, hahaha". Protests generally indicate agreement. In fact all men here are really a bunch of women, no means yes and yes means no. What's that all about? ;-)

"So after a few weeks on this site I posted a forum thread about reliability issues after stabbing, possibly even carrying on outside the game. Months later, I still haven't really stabbed anyone, except in situations where I had already been stabbed myself."

This could be read as a gay narrative.

Redhouse, why haven't you stabbed? Have you never been in a position where a stab would advance your position? Have you played any games where afterwards you realized you missed an opportunity?
I never really stab unless stabbed; it's sort of natural reflex to do so.

You're doing it wrong.

@spyman:
I don't know. I just don't want my good name discredited during the game. During my first game on this site I soloed and I didn't stab anyone.
Sure, I've been in a position where a stab would advance my position. I do backstab though. If I'm being stabbed, than at some point I'll avenge myself, but I don't like to take the initiative.
Regarding games where I had the option and didn't stab? No. I do sometimes regret giving a second chance to players I know are just incompetent to build up functional relationships during the game, but I never regretted not taking the initiative to stab someone who was good for his word.

I also never stabbed anyone. Stabbing implies having allies. I don't like allies.

Right? I always tell everyone but they just don't see it. Good for you, man.
Stabbings implies, like, having a knife.

Okay, this became a troll's lair. I'm this close to muting my own thread. :)

Red, I do not know of anyone who has stabbed well and had their name tarnished. A good stab, a clever stab if you will, is often applauded in the post game even by the victim. I forget who has it in his profile, but the gist of his paragraph is," if you're going to stab me, make it worthwhile. Cripple me. Be clever. But don't just take a center because you can. "

I myself still struggle with when precisely to stab, which seems to be the hardest learning curve for all diplomacy players. For example, semck likes to stab right out the gate (gameID=82542), and he's a seasoned player!

I haven't lied in any game in the past 2 years, oddly enough it hasn't helped me win games. :(
Tasnica (3366 D)
14 Mar 12 UTC
Funnily enough, in the one game I've played with Semck, he was my best ally.

In the same game, Redhouse got brutally murdered by Fortknox and Zultar. To his credit, I don't think that he stabbed anyone. ;)
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
14 Mar 12 UTC
I just went through that game again, and FK actually never stab him. That was all me. :)
That was still a frustrating game for me because I couldn't break up the AI alliance.
Tasnica (3366 D)
14 Mar 12 UTC
Which, of course, consisted of Semck and myself.

*Offers Semck the Bro Fist*
I have never stabbed anyone in my career.
ghug (5068 D(B))

I don't actually bother stabbing people myself, I make others do that for me.
redhouse1938 (429 D)
14 Mar 12 UTC
@zultar, yes you stabbed me multiple times during that game, so did fortknox. The difference was that fortknox was being a little condescending to me all the time while he did it, while you were being respectful, which is why I turned to you for help.
Actually I'd been probing the countries around France during that game and all of them appeared to have either an alliance or a non-aggression pact with him. I believe there was an Italian NMR in that game causing a little perturbation.
Surely if England reaches out to Germany and Germany has an alliance with France, and then Germany stabs England, Germany could get a better result out of the game? It illustrates my uncomfortability with stabbing myself.
Tasnica (3366 D)
14 Mar 12 UTC
I remember that I had my first "long distance alliance" in that game, with England. He didn't trust me for the longest time, though. ;)
redhouse1938 (429 D)
14 Mar 12 UTC
I didn't? I'll have to reread the messages. I was new to the game then.
Tasnica (3366 D)
14 Mar 12 UTC
So was I!

*Bro Fist to Redhouse as well*
redhouse1938 (429 D)
14 Mar 12 UTC
Should I be concerned about that knife in your Bro Fist or is it all good? ;-)

Bro fist to you Tas. I hope we'll play another game sometime in the future.

joining games
I would really like to play games with more talented players than the usual bet15 noobs. I don´t want to seem arrogant, but I want to test my personal skills. I played lots of gunboat games to train my technique, and now I am thinking of joining a game bet 100 with anonymous players. How do I know those aren´t cheaters in there. Maybe I am paranoid, but this specific size of bet seems quite suspicious to me. Can anybody help me how to find adequate games?

WebDip Fantasy Baseball League
Hey guys, in the fall we ran a pretty successful (except for two no-shows at the end) fantasy football league, so why not try it again for baseball? League will be on Yahoo (if someone recommends something different like ESPN, we're welcome) and size will be how many people we can gather.

failed stat question?
the bolshoi manner was interviewing for a new groom of the stool and the applicant claimed to have some kind of mathematical aptitude. i gave him this problem just to mess with him and he seemed to not give me much of an answer. is he qualified? for some reason this position seems to have a high attrition rate.

In a previous thread of obi's I said that I wished I could go back and switch my major to economics. I looked today and lo and behold, I still have time, so I'm doing it. What are some generally useful areas of study?

Final Game 2
http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=76725
This game was unfortunately cancelled, so no one will be able to see what happened in it (is this a flaw in the system?).
I thought I'd make this thread anyway in case people wanted to know who was who, or give a EoG for as far as the game got. I think it was good before the extended pause...

Languages
I love languages and linguistics, so I'm starting a thread about it in the hope that at least one thread here won't derail into a trollfest of shit-flinging. What languages do you speak or want to learn? What languages do you find interesting or beautiful? Are there any autodidacts here, sitting at home with Mandarin flashcards?

I also know that people who hate you are typically the best editors.
And so, I have a poem for you all to read....and I would like some constructive feedback, if such a thing exists on this site:

Couldn't Figure This Math Problem Out, Hard As I Tried, Am I A Fool?
Likely.

But I just have to know what the answer to this Stats question is from my test...the other 11 problems I went through fine, and then THIS problem I puzzled over for 45 minutes solid, until everyone had long left over half an hour ago, and I just had to punt (I TOLD YOU...I'm just atrocious at math!) :)

...Political Science?
I'll be trying to double-major in English and PoliSci when I transfer this fall, and was just curious what those who are currently PoliSci majors--and even better, maybe those with PoliSci careers--think? (And a bonus question: Without cheating, from WHICH literary work do we get the infamous phrase "Kill all the lawyers?" I'd give a hint as to the author, but...do I NEED to, when *I* am making the reference?) ;)

I guess I'm not the only one who likes wandering sometimes between players' profiles, watching their percentage of losses/wins/draws etc. So, judging by this percentage, who are the most, like, talented diplomacy players you know? Or are you one of them?.
