We need a new italy!
Dear all, We are desperately in need of a replacement player for italy. Not the most popular of nations, I know ;) , but a crucial one nonetheless.

a day of remembrance
I'd just like to take this moment to remind everyone that 200 years ago we had to beat the crap out of the meddling British once again. Fortunately they've since learned their lesson and we've dominated their culture ever since.

Now if we could only get them to stop saying "lorry."

a struggle to enjoy this site at times
how do I get some reliable play time, it seems that this place is rife with Multis... I love this game, played it since 1979, online just recently, is there a better way to go about playing this game? there seem to be so many cheaters on here, is that just something I have to put up with or is there a better way?
would love some feed back on options, changes to the dealings of cheaters, or just your opinion

If you are going to nmr and let your country cd because you have had a slight setback and would rather walk away than try and actually improve, please at least log off the site.

Thanks

while I'm opposed to the idea of a 'I want to quit, *tears*' button, I do wish there was some mechanism to log a big message on your account that you'd done it and give the rest of the players an opportunity for a sub...

And maybe even allow someone to take over without any penalty to GR or anything... so taking over a country in trouble is a respectable thing to do without any ill effects.

This pm was entirely directed at you P.E. :P

nah, just come on, if you're going to compromise the game at least have the courtesy to log off. Seriously, the standard for live game cders has really dropped.

"And maybe even allow someone to take over without any penalty to GR or anything... so taking over a country in trouble is a respectable thing to do without any ill effects."

This is a biggie. I know many more games would be partially salvaged but everyone wants to keep their pristine GR.
lol. I'm not even playing whatever game you're in. You have to be able to see who it is though right? (otherwise you wouldn't know they were not logging out)

If so, I have a sudden urge to troll.
fulhamish (4134 D)

Worse one is when they nmr, lurk around and then come back to try and steal the draw at the last minute. A nasty piece of gamesmanship.
Hey, that's a brilliant way to rack up GR. Thanks for the tip, fulhamish
fulhamish (4134 D)

Your welcome, I think! :-)

Seriously I think that it would help a little if post-nmr remaining players resisted the drive to cancel and drew the thing instead. That way at least the time-wasters would have it on their record. Also, as I understand it, the gr rating is not affected by an early year draw.
Actually, I remember stealing a draw once in a gunboat. I got Sealioned due to wtf magic (not cheating, legit coordinated Sealion in a gunboat) and turned in orders (to hold) with 1 second for like 2 years and made everyone think I quit.

The rage was delicious

Yep I have seen that several ties President and I think it is a legitimate tactic. A pretty powerful one too when you have a small force and your enemy has a larger one with many units to coordinate.
fulhamish (4134 D)

Around 10-15 s to go is a really optimum time to put it in.
Maybe my ass has been in games the whole time. :D:D:D

Perhaps a an "I Quit" button that removes you from the game (force CD) and won't allow you to un CD without paying more points to get back in, notifies the mod team you have quit, *and* auto pauses the game so the rest of the players don't see a turn go to waste and a game get forever destroyed.

Just a thought.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))

GR/points should be no-risk for takeovers imo. If you lose the penalty is detracted from the quitter. If you win you get the reward. Youd have no problem filling slots then.
EmperorMaximus (551 D)

I wouldn't want a quit button, that would be recognising quitting as a legitimate choice rather than a rude gesture.
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
17 Jan 12 UTC
I agree with EmperorMaximus that quitting should not be legitimized, and autopausing games is a horrible idea for many reasons.
GR/points should be have reduced risk instead of no risk (instead of proportional to total points).
Gobbledydook (1389 D(B))
17 Jan 12 UTC
It's already supposed to be at reduced risk, but no-one will join a game, as Italy, where he has 2 units left, France is in Tys and Tus, and Turkey is in Ion.

@Draug: "Perhaps a an "I Quit" button that removes you from the game (force CD) and won't allow you to un CD without paying more points to get back in, notifies the mod team you have quit, *and* auto pauses the game so the rest of the players don't see a turn go to waste and a game get forever destroyed."

Why the hell do I (or any mod) want an email every time someone quits? Why do we care? Just put a big "I cry when I start doing bad in games X many times" on the profile... sorry, anyone that quits a game without a legitimate IRL reason (like PE'sd) I will deem a crybaby that can't handle the game.
Draugnar (0 DX)
17 Jan 12 UTC
@FK - I was just thinking as a heads up in case the auto paused game needs a forced unpause.

Re: A Quit Button - I agree that it would legitimatize it somehow, but the alternative is that the game gets ruined when it takes two turns for the player to go CD and the game doesn't get paused so it continues to run. If someone wants to quit, they can contact the mods and ask to be removed, but then the mods have to get involved and it adds workload to them. The thought was to protect the integrity of the game as much as possible when someone is determined to quit anyhow.

Re: A Forced Pause - Because the position is put into CD, It just takes the remaining players to decide to unpause to get it to continue with the spot in CD. At least that was my thought.
Leif_Syverson (271 D)

I like the "I'm a crybaby who has quit X games" stat for profiles.

Of course I don't want to suggest the already overworked Kestas do more, but while I'm dreaming, the new game screen could have an option for blocking players from joining the new game who have quit more than X number of times.

Players who CD, could be charged double or triple the cost they initally paid to join the game, or be dropped straight back to 100, or even temporarily to 50 or less for a week or two for repeat offenders.

Not to suggest adding work for the mods either (though if done right this may acutally be less work) if someone has a legitimate IRL reason to CD, they can contact the mods prior to the CD to avoid the penalties, or possibly if an emergency causes the CD, then they could appeal after the fact. (Default, the mods could grant any request, since it takes some effort to contact the mods with an explanation of an IRL reason for the CD, and have a stat only the mods can see for each player for how many times they have requested a waiver of penalties for CD. Thus the mods can tell who is gaming the system with simple glance at their profile. A person who has a weekly crisis to get out of a game should be easy to spot).

As for how to address ruined games once CD's occur, I'm not sure there is an easy way to fix that. It's probably easier to discourage CD's in the first place.
fortknox (2059 D)
17 Jan 12 UTC
This game is better with self moderation. If someone needs to CD for legit reasons, why not setup a vote for it (or, better yet, ask for a pause?). So the only reason mods are involved is when there is a conflict with the players in the game.
Leif_Syverson (271 D)
17 Jan 12 UTC
Yeah, as much as possible I try to be cognizant of IRL issues that people bring up in games and pause draw or cancel as needed, but when there is a dispute, the players will go to the mods anyways for action, so if the community want's CD penalized, my post was a simple suggestion if a player is "forced" to CD by an IRL issue.

Europe is in financial shambles
I posted on here about ten months ago that German bonds were a good investment because the disappearance of the Euro meant the reemergence of national currencies and the German Mark ( and German bonds denominated in Marks) would gain enormously. Europe isn't letting me down.

Are GR ratings dependent on the ratio of scs a player holds with respect to another player in a draw? Or is it just YES/NO in the draw?
