switching players?

Apologies if this is on the FAQ already, but I didn't see it. We're just starting a game (ID=39473) and have one player who signed up but in the end may not be able to make the time commitment - not certain yet but haven't heard from him since the signup. Fortunately he's Italy. We're going to pause while we make sure he's still in, but if not, is there a way to let someone else take over? It's still Spring '01, and his first/only online game. Thanks for any advice!

machiavelli anyone?

i just found a site to play machiavelli, a variant of diplomacy. this site is relative new and doesnt have YET the full features that makes machiavelli so different from diplomacy but gradullay is acquiring new features from the game.

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: It's A Miracle! (Wait, Should We Think It So?)

Tomorrow I'll be discussing in my weekly "Philosophy of Religion' class the issue of Miracles and how this pertains to God--but come to think of it, I have a question I'd rather ask and adress instead of the old "Is it or is it not a miracle/Does a miracle prove God?" schpiel. MY question, and I intend to debate in class tomorrow as well--even if they HAVE happened, SHOULD we consider Miracles/a protecting God as real, or is it better to live without that idea of a "protector?"

Sitter possibly needed

I'm going out of town tonight till Sunday. I think it won't be a problem but it's possible that 1 or 2 games might need a sitter depending on the clock. Ancient Med

I haven't played a lot of ancient med (only 2 games, honestly), and the games I have were newbies. Anyone with a decent GR (let's say... 300+?) want to jump in a game.
36-72 hour turns, anon, small pot (under 100

Critique this fun new opening I stumbled upon today in a gunboat...

Italian opening I call the Alpine Tripleback, after the inspiration for it, the Alpine Doubleback. It's a Lepanto that delays the convoy for a turn by feinting toward France, landing the army in Syria in S1903.

World Dip map convoy problems

I know there must be earlier topics about this issue, but I'm too lazy too look 'em up.

Recently, I've been experiencing trouble with the 'order menu'. Simple move and support orders work out fine, but the (complex) convoy system failed last turn in one of my games. Trying to move Army A from Country C to Destination D, trouble begins with selecting D from all the options available. First it takes a while, and then I get a warning the script is stuck. When I click on 'continue' the same window reappears, but when I click on 'stop', and try to save the orders I get 'invalid terr' codes with the orders in question.

Is this something I can solve myself or is it something in the software?

I've had a similar problem in one of my game. Everytime I'd have the option box for "by land/by convoy", the script would get stuck after ~30 seconds of being frozen. Usually clicking "stop" somewhat solves the problem for me though. (the orders stay on what I had originally clicked, say "by land").

It's still awkward and boring to waste about 3-5 minutes more every time I plan orders though.

The problem is that with so many water spaces, often filled up with tons of fleets, there are just soooo many convoy options and the javascript has to figure out where all an army could go. So it takes a long time. But, the browser may think the script is in an infinite loop or something since it is taking so long so it is trying to help you by stopping it.

If you are using IE, try FireFox and Chrome. Those still may have problems but it has sounded like less problems.

Also, you might be better of keeping on clicking continue as much as necessary rather than stop. Hope that helps.

I second the recommendation for Firefox. It has failed me in relation to this problem - but it does seem to succeed most of the time where IE fails (but you will have to click continue a few times).

Thanks for the tips, and I'm using Firefox :) This is the first time this thing occurred on me, and indeed, there are a lot of convoy options to consider. I'll work on my patience.

Another tip is use a faster computer, it works really better in a i5 processor notebook then on my old pentium, both with same Firefox version (but still show that message sometimes, and I need to click on Continue once or twice until the convoy order get right).

Best game set available

I am lucky enough to have a copy of the really good Avalon Hill version with the metal pieces, but now I notice that they've stopped publishing it and the new AH version sucks. Pure cardboard!

Thoughts on getting them to republish the old version or a new, rockin' one? I think we need a version where every country has armies/fleets cast of different elements. Chromium, copper, iron, aluminum, tin, bismuth, and zinc.
