Strategies for public-only messaging games
Anyone has good pointers on how to play diplomacy without private messaging? How do you form alliances while disclosing your intentions to the public?

International Language?
It came up in the other thread, so I'd like to know. What's your vote for world international language? And give reasons.

PS: "Everyone" does NOT, in fact, know English.

Ancient Med Map for those new to the variant?
I've not tried an Ancient Med map, before, though I'm quite familiar with the game. Any other ancient med newbies up for trying it out? If I get 7, I'll start it up.

Do you look a point when deciding a course of action
In open games do people look at the points/statistics that various players have to determine a course of action. Do you consider someone with more points more dangerous and therefore look to team up against them, or do you try to ally with them to get a better partner?

Biggest Win
I'm sure most of us have won with 18 or 19, and a win even higher is really impressive, but what's everyone's biggest win?
Right now, mine is 27, read more for details.

Until recently, my highest was 20. I was Turkey, ended up racing to the win against England, who ended with 14 when the game ended in 1908. I started allied with Austria to fight Russia, and while Russia and Italy invaded Austria, I grabbed some of Russia. When it was clear that Austria was going to fall, I finished him off as quickly and painlessly as possible. Then I allied myself with Italy once Russia had fallen, but I occupied the entire Mediterranean. We took down France together (imgaine, Italy and Turkey allying against France) and then stabbed Italy for the win.

But now I'm in a game that is about to enter Autumn 1911, which will be the final turn. I'm playing as Russia, and Turkey and I played a classic Juggernaut as we steamrolled across the board. At the end of 1910 I was sitting on 17 centers, Turkey was at 13, and Italy (which Turkey had been unable to squish) was at 4. I figured that since it was a points per supply center game, I might as well go for as many as possible, so this spring I grabbed Spain, Vienna, and Ankara, leaving me with a pretty little 20 centers. Turkey, however has been NMRing the past few turns, and if he does so again, I'll pick up Spain, Marseilles, Venice, Trieste, Romania, Constantinople, and Smyrna. 27 centers.

So what's everyone else's high center score? I think I'm setting the bar pretty high with 27, but I'd love to hear what others have gotten.

Let see if I understand right: you did such a long post to brag about getting 20 something centers against other player that is going into CD?
Really well done, you should be very proud of it....

Wow, a record in futility. Any SC gained after 18 is pointless, as it doesn't affect score in any system used here. In fact, many would consider it poor sportsmanship to delay a game so you can get these useless SCs.

Good job boasting about something like this...
Samianus (471 D)

I certainly consider it poor sportsmanship to delay the end of a game go for more than 18.
sean (3490 D(B))

I thought the game ended automatically once autumn rolled around and one nation had equal to or more than 18 SC ?

yes its pretty poor sportsmanship displayed here.
To be fair to the OP, he doesn't seem to be delaying the game. He ended 1910 with 17 SCs in the normal way. Now he has moved up to 20 in the Spring of 1911, and plans to grab 7 more in the Fall. Pointless? Yes. Greedy? Perhaps. Delay of Game? No.
BigZombieDude (1188 D)

If that kind of opportunity comes along why not take it? Greedy, yes...but interesting nonetheless.
Interesting by taking SCs from a country in CD? How is that interesting?

I could easily have killed off Austria on the last turn in this game and there was no reason not to. But he played the game well, no need to rub his nose in my victory.

I agree a solo is a solo and is a good acomplishment.Would like to see board hard to imagine a growth of 10 SCs in one turn.Even if Turkey is NMR he must have units in some SCs which would require 2 of his units to take it taking away from him to grab all of the SCs he claims to be able to take. And what about Italy he has 4 units and should tie up some other units or even pick off a SC from him.Post the game thread when it is done would like to see.
BigZombieDude (1188 D)

I didnt mention anything about CD countries. 18 is the limit and a solo is most definitely an accomplishment, that said, given the chance to take 27 would also be quite accomplishment. Winning and taking lots of SC's against CD countries is easy, so clearly not worth talking about.

Instead of jumping on the 'thats poor sportsmanship' bandwagon because you know everyone else will agree, say something else instead.
In the case of the original post, the poster was talking about taking the last 7 SCs from an ally who was in CD.
Personally, I think this is somewhat more interesting than setting up a game with the sole purpose of executing the "world's longest convoy." But that doesn't set the bar very high.

Why is it poor sportsmanship to go for more than 18 in a points-per-supply-centre game? I'd always assumed that PPSC players are expected to go for the most supply centres no matter what, and that it would be considered against the spirit of the game (or poor sportsmanship) to stop to help an ally when it means you'll end with less points that you could have.
falsifian (188 D)
23 Mar 10 UTC
I should mention that I'm fairly new here and still figuring out what people's expectations are.
Stukus (2126 D)
23 Mar 10 UTC
It's only poor sportsmanship if you delay the game to do so, falsifian. If all you could get the turn before was 17 and you can somehow get 34 this turn, go for it. But don't sit at 17, set up your units, so you can get more than 18. That's what's considered bad form.
In PPSC scoring, points max out at 18SCs. If you collect more SCs you get the same points. However, by reducing the SCs of other players, I believe you reduce the points they earn (with the difference going to the house). I am not 100% sure about that final statement though.
Stukus (2126 D)
23 Mar 10 UTC
Also, in this particular case, I'd guess a lot of the animosity stems from the OP's "look how great I am" post.
Plastic,
I was wondering about that myself. I was wondering if the winner gets 18/34 and the remaining losers get 16/34 split between them. If the pot is 340, the winner gets 180.

If the losers have 16 SCs between them, each SC is worth 10, so they split 160.
If the losers have 14 SCs, do they split 140 at 10 a piece. Or is each of the 14 SCs worth 160/14, or 11.4 each, so they split 14*11.4 = 160
Golgo1 (459 D)

It does seem kind of 'less dramatic' to get the last few from a player not playing, but I don't see how it is less valid than any other win.
If you took over a few SCs from a CD player in 1904, then won in 1910, why do you think that makes the win better than taking them in the last turn? SCs from CD come into play regardless of WHEN they were captured.

A bad example:

Stukus (2126 D)

@Golgo1. It always feels lame taking CD SCs. But A) Other players aren't going to ignore them even if you do, and B) Someone can come back and take the country. So you pretty much have to take CD SCs if you want to win. The last turn of the game, though, when you have alternative ways to win, it's less defensible. It never feels epic, though.
@DJ.
I took a look at a very small sample of games I found with a player winning at more than 18, as well as some normal games. It seems the system gives the winner around 59% of the pot, regardless of win size (as we knew). The rest of the points are split among other surviving players, with no points being left to "the house."
I looked at these two in particular:
http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=24715

http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=24667
So therefore winning by more than 18 does not change the amount awarded to the victor, nor the total divided by other survivors. It will change the ratio of the survivors' division, depending on who gave up the extra SCs.
Golgo1 (459 D)
23 Mar 10 UTC
so (hypothetical) elliminating all but one surviving player before you take the win, still doesnt give you more points, it actually gives the other player more points?
I guess in most cases like that, the game ends near 17-18.
But what if you (very unlikely) clobbered the last round and left the other player with one SC, and you grabbed all the rest... does he get the same points as if the had lots left?

all just out of curiosity of course :)
Alderian (2425 D(S))
24 Mar 10 UTC
That is the way it is supposed to be Golgo1. The winner gets 18/34ths of the pot and the survivors get the remaining portion split based on how many SCs they each have. So if there is only one other survivor and he has only 1 center, he still gets that other 16/34ths of the pot.

The one exception that I think exists is if everyone but one player goes CD. In that case since there are no survivors the winner gets the whole pot.

"Baby Killer!" (Oh, and Health Care passes, too.)
That was a disgraceful remark... really, calling someone "Baby Killer" in the hallowed halls of the Representatives building! That particular Democrat at whom the remark was targeted was actually staunchly opposed to abortion... free speech, or disgusting? (Oh, and that Health Care thingy, that too... what do you think about that tiny thing?) ;)
