My own complaint
I have a complaint of my own. In a recent game, I attacked Vienna when I meant to attack Venice. That was annoying as well as my ally was none too happy about it. Can you rename one of those two cities to something that starts with a 'B' or a "Z'? Say Be Nice or maybe Zienna?

How does one do this? I've looked on the tubes and most of what i've seen is can be summarized by:
1) make allies and hope you don't get back stabbed
2) try to survive past 1903.

How much does your rating matter to you?
I've noticed what I consider to be a fairly annoying trend lately...
stratagos (3269 D(S))
05 Jan 10 UTC
... people implying that the position on the Ghost Ratings is a serious consideration on a tactical level - ie: you won't do X because you're afraid to damage your rating; you won't play me because you don't want to screw up your rating, don't let X in on the draw because ect...

And I gotta be honest - while I freely admit taking a peek at the ratings when they come out, and I respect the effort Ghost put in to making them, I really don't give a rat where I stand.

My philosophy is pretty simple when it comes to games:
If possible, aolo
If a solo is not possible, make sure someone *else* doesn't solo - start setting up a draw
If I can't solo or be part of the draw, then do whatever I feel like - lash out at the power that's been annoying you all game, or take someone down with you into death, or drag out my inevitable doom as long as possible by playing defensively - as long as it's not *predictable*, that's the goal.

Notice how ratings have zip to do with that. With the exception of the Leagues, where each game is *not* self contained, I really don't *care* how things affect my rating.

Do you?
Sendler (418 D)
05 Jan 10 UTC
which rating?
GR? or the point system here?

point system here: I only care about it because I want more points, so I can someday regularly play 100+x games without worrying about the consequences, but I can not play 18 per 100 D games atm ;)
I want to play 100+x games, because I expect less CDs and more challenging competition.

And GR: matters only a little to me, but I dont care too much about it, I play how I feel like playing, but of course I am happy to not have a too low GR
Sendler (418 D)
05 Jan 10 UTC
Yes, I really like taking people into death sometimes ;) If they get pissed and complain, that makes it even more fun lol
Kamen (1935 D(S))
05 Jan 10 UTC
GR is OK, points are OK, tournaments are OK. This way everybody can find his own motivation. This keeps larger number of players playing here and possibly better quality of games. The interesting question is - why are we playing this game?
Sendler (418 D)
05 Jan 10 UTC
Because it is fun and addictive.
And you can learn how to lie without feeling guilty, lol.
Ursa (1617 D)
05 Jan 10 UTC
I haven't met anyone who is bothered about Ghost-ratings that much as you describe. And I agree to you it shouldn't have that much influence. Out-of-game influence is bad. But just like you check other player's accounts before the game start, you can check your GR position. I just saw I dropped 50 places... have to play more live games... :o
spyman (424 D(G))

"people implying that the position on the Ghost Ratings is a serious consideration on a tactical level"

If you win its better for your Ghost Rating, you lose it might not be so good, and if you share in a draw its somewhere in-between. So if you want to improve your Ghost Rating, play to win. If that is the tactical consideration, I think that is fine. I am not so sure about other "considerations".

"don't let X in on the draw because ect..."

What is this one about? I haven't heard of this before.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
05 Jan 10 UTC
"you won't play me because you don't want to screw up your rating"

This means that the person doesn't understand the whole concept of Ghost-Ratings. If you want, let them ask me directly. :)
Hibiskiss (631 D)

I was eliminated a few times based on Ghost Rating before I started returning the favor.

figlesquidge (2131 D)
05 Jan 10 UTC
Obviously its nice but always play for fun.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
05 Jan 10 UTC
@Sendler - people kill off the best player because then they're more likely to make a GR gain. This is also a case of tall poppy syndrome as the best GR is generally the best player, but these people would still use the tactic with all players equal.
Sendler (418 D)
05 Jan 10 UTC
One more reason to play Anon games.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
05 Jan 10 UTC
But then again, G-Rating doesn't care who you kill off, just your own result.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
05 Jan 10 UTC
And the quality of the others in the game
akilies (861 D)
05 Jan 10 UTC
eh i could care less what my GR is, sure i'm excited when it goes up by 892 spots, but i wouldn't care if it goes down 10000 spots next month. as long as i'm having fun thats all that matters to me. I didn't join this site just to try and get a high GR. I didn't even know about it for quite a few months.

not to take anything from TGM- it's a great rating system and all the parts and things that go into it are very interesting. and being a math and number freak i love things like this.
I'll play anyone. even you stratagos.
akilies (861 D)

Rule Britannia (737 D)

This mat be a dumb question, but how do you find your ghost rating? Do you just have to keep scrolling on the ghost rating list? Or is there an easier way?
rdrivera2005 (3533 D(G))
05 Jan 10 UTC
With exception on the leagues, I play each game thinking only on getting the best result on that game and having fun on the process. And GR is a fine rating system but don´t measure the fun you got in a game (I have some survivals and draws that give me a lot more fun and proud than an easy win).
akilies (861 D)
05 Jan 10 UTC
i just keep scrolling, once you find yourself you have a starting point for looking the next month.
though there could very well be a better way.

MadMarx (36299 D(G))
06 Jan 10 UTC
I prefer to not drop in the rankings, either one, but they are what they are and don't affect my play too much, or so I like to think... That said, I try to find any/every argument I can make to others in my games, so I often bring up rankings as an argument to try to persuade others to work with me...
Sendler (418 D)
06 Jan 10 UTC
@madmarx: nice idea of using GR as an argument havent done that yet (and ive tried alot)
Centurian (3257 D)
06 Jan 10 UTC
How would the ratings affect game play? I don't understand the dire consequences Stratagos. If I am playing a game with MadMarx for example it doesn't matter how he places (so I don't have to eliminate him because his rating is so high) it only matters how I place. I wouldn't *avoid* playing anyone because if they are tough the payoff is higher and if they arent the payout is more likely. So GR meshes with my play already doesn't it? Not like the leagues for example where the leaders are for sure taken out later on.

Is there something I'm missing?
texasdeluxe (516 D(B))
06 Jan 10 UTC
I'll let you know when I get a decent Ghost Rating :P
stratagos (3269 D(S))
06 Jan 10 UTC
I didn't say these arguments made *sense*, Centurian, just that people are making them.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
06 Jan 10 UTC
"I prefer to not drop in the rankings, either one, but they are what they are "

I'm not incorruptible, so that isn't quite true ;):P.
Centurian (3257 D)
06 Jan 10 UTC
Well I guess you can just counter their arguments with an explanation of the G-Ratings.

I did once come across someone who wanted to eliminate me because of my high rating at the time, but I sorted that out.
C-K (2037 D)
06 Jan 10 UTC
What about people who could possibly win a game or share 2-way draw choosing to Draw with 5 players and the 2 leaders with 10 sc's each. Would taking the safe and GR friendly draw instead of playing for the win and risking the non GR friendly Survive constitute playing for GR?

Not accusing anyone but just for the sake of argument.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
06 Jan 10 UTC
Well, thats more just taking a risk:reward judgement. The Result gained is the same in G-Rating as points as the game itself, and the player is just deciding its too risky to go for the win

Survives are just as good in G-Rating as in points. G-Rating is NOT EQUIVALENT TO WTA
StevenC. (1047 D(B))

"G-Rating is NOT EQUIVALENT TO WTA"

And thank God it isn't. : )
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
06 Jan 10 UTC
I've added a note on G-Rating to my profile, feel free to link people to it if you want to.

Its just below the poem.
stratagos (3269 D(S))
06 Jan 10 UTC
So, Ghost, just to make sure I understand, GR is chiefly interested in maximizing SCs. So it would be *better* from a GR perspective to accept a strong second rather than part of a draw, correct?
Centurian (3257 D)
06 Jan 10 UTC
In PPSC yes, but not WTA.

GR is allocated the same way points are. In fact, its kind of like the points system, except better players have higher buy-ins.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
06 Jan 10 UTC
That's a good way of summarizing it Centurian.

How's it coming along btw Ghost: recon you've settled on your damping constant yet?
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
06 Jan 10 UTC
I haven't looked into that yet, figle.
spyman (424 D(G))
07 Jan 10 UTC
"So it would be *better* from a GR perspective to accept a strong second rather than part of a draw, correct? "

I have mixed feelings about the idea about accepting a seond over a draw. This is why I suggested that TGM just use the one algorithim (the same as used for WTA) when calculating Ghost Rating. Just to be clear, this was just a suggestion, and by advocating it I was only encouraging TGM (and others) to explore the concept. I accpet the reasons given for why this might not be a good ideal

The reason I have mixed feeling about playing for second in PPSC - is that some players view this as a legitmate goal, while others do not consider this a legitamate goal. I think it is better if all players share the same concept of what the goal of the game is. I have seen it happen where good players have tried to get everyone to force a draw and have paid the price.
