Metagaming.
To what extant is it metagaming if you make decisions on the basis that those who suffer from your decision might decide to get you back in another game you ar playing.

Civil Disorder - Record Smearing Free?
I see a lot of games that are available to take over a country in civil disorder. However, by taking over most of them, it is giving your record a quick loss. I wish that taking over games didn't tarnish your record, for good or for bad. Thoughts?

Least irrelevant province in Diplomacy
Which province has the most impact on any game?

I think MAO, MUN, NTS, GAL, and then either WMS or IOS. Maybe we can do one of those +/- things where they get points. Anyone care to create a list of ten? We have to do that first.

adjudication question
if a unit is ordered to move can an adjacent unit of the same power support hold that unit... it would seem to me that if the move order failed then the unit would be holding in place and the support would be given...

Is Diplomacy Unfair?
Rumour has it that Turkey is more likely to win the game than any other country. Is this true?

snatching victory from the jaws of defeat.
Has anyone ever gone on to win a game of diplomacy after having been reduced to a single supply center?
If not what about after having been reduced to 2 supply centres or going on to a draw?
Anyone got stories to tell on this subject?

Diplomacy group on Jyte
I was thinking about ways to debate Diplomacy topics, when I realised jyte would be perfect for this sort of thing. The group is at http://jyte.com/groups/diplomacy .

Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got to go kill myself for being too stupid to have figured this out several years ago.

Gunboat - what's the point?
Diplomacy's actual wargame elements are highly abstract, and the gameplay hinges on making and breaking alliances.

What, then, is the point of a gunboat game, with no diplomatic dealings?

civil disorder
how many turns does it take for a country to enter civil disorder... and do the retreat and unit placing phases count toward civil disorder if they didn't have to input any orders...

... and please exclude orders by players in their first game or obvious typing or order input mistakes, or differences you might have with someone about what "good play" is.

For me that would be the now infamous diplofool opening played against me:

Are you sure your name is Onar? Or could it be Onan, if you're bouncing yourself?
Draugnar (0 DX)

That would be fun. Have all non-essential forces bounce where they can on the last fall where you take 18...

I just checked out the game in question, and I agree. Epic opening. On another note, that is an insane battle over the British Isles in that game :P

I remember one fun game where I'm England and my lacklustre ally was France. We'd been successfully conquering the Germans.

He moves into Kiel and takes it from me, and moves to Mid-Atlantic but its such a limited stab that I think it might be a mistake or misoder.
He thensays to me- You've been rude to me the whole game! So take this! Stab! Stab!

I'm puzzled, because I'm generally corteous. But I shrug, retake Kiel, and move my forces in to attack France.

He then says "Oh shit, no! Your the polite one. I meant to stab 'Italy'...

It was quite hilarious, if tragically so. We later set up a successful stalemate line against Italy that lasted for a while but we lost because he kept NMRing every so often. That was even more tragically funny.

I had a game recently where in 02 England got evicted and the game was paused. I couldn't unpause straight away because I was busy, and while they were waiting for me to unpause they decided they couldn't be bothered and voted for a draw. I was still away so I didn't vote. I came back, unpaused the game and started play again. Then in 03/04 Germany and Russia came gunning for me and were going to take all my centres in Autumn. I knew I would leave the game quickly, but I also knew I had an easy way out. I typed "/draw" and came in second behind Russia.

those are some awesome stories...

here is a really dumb move I just saw recently... I'm germany, and I support a Russian unit into swe from den...

he moves fin to swe as agreed... and would have taken it... except - he supported Swe from GoB.

yup. His fleet supported the enemy unit that he himself was attacking (and this is not a newb either - its one of the top players on the site)

i think it falls into the category of dumb mistakes, but its funny none-the-less.

Or the category of changing plans and changing the orders for all but one of the units involved.

Russian opening:

F StP(sc)-Fin
A War-Pru

I don't remember the southern units, but that's pretty sad right there.
Hereward77 (930 D)

The move to Finland isn't that bad...as I recall there's an article on The Pouch about it. A War - Pru is a little less sane, but it COULD work.

one of my friends played a game where someone convoyed from smyrna to take st petersburg from him. went through 3 different countries fleets.

To qualify as a nutty opening the following things need to be considered:
1. it is not a misorder
2. it is a serious attempt at play
3. the player is not stoned/smashed/drunk or under the influence of medicinal overdoes
4. It is not a 'dah' moment
5. the player has to attempt to defend their action (in action)

The last point is usually the most entertaining.

@babak - now that's funny. Not so funny is that people could click on your name and see that you are referring to your top game and find out who made the mistake! Doh, I hope I haven't made that easy for everybody.
Chrispminis (916 D)
01 May 09 UTC
Well I thought it was pretty funny, but I think Edi's first point covers this. Misorders, while often entertaining, shouldn't count. Otherwise I've had a few of those. =)
Babak (26982 D(B))
01 May 09 UTC
wow... Maniac - you figured that out all on your own with no help =P
