Can you hand over a country without going into civil disorder?
Is it possible to hand over your country, in good order, to another player without sitting around for three turns and going into civil disorder first?

3 questions
1.I was watching my wife cut the grass while I was drinking a beer & playing with my 3 year old son. A bad thing?
2.While she was cutting the grass, I thought to my self, if I supported my wife from the drive way she would get the job done faster. Diplomacy on the brain?
3.At least I was not playing diplomacy while she was cutting the grass right? Sorry, had to share:)

Retreat Rule Question
Can a unit retreat to a territory that is was attacked from? For instance, let's say that Bulgaria was attacked from Rumania with support from the Black Sea. For the adjustment phase Rumania is now empty. Can the army that was in Bulgaria retreat to Rumania? Thank you for your help.

One because I lied and stabbed him in F'01.
One because I offered a game-long alliance to another player.
One because I didn't ally with him in two consecutive games.
One because I was going to keep a 17-17 agreement with my ally.
One because I am suiciding out against him after he stabbed me.

Is it just me, or do other players get told the same kind of thing?

Do I have any kind of obligation to avoid all games with players who have said they don't want to play with me? Must I limit my own play to meet their expectations?
rratclif (0 DX)

Nah, I've said that to a person or two as a diplomatic tactic :-p. I think I even called you "full of shit" in a game if I remember correctly. I've just found that often enough people will say things like "No no I'm not that bad of a person, let me make it up to you!", or if you call them a liar they'll stop lying to you.

Granted this is an extremely double-edged sword, calling the wrong person the wrong thing will get you killed, but in the right situation with the right people say whatever you think will get you the advantage.

I'd say no matter what someone says to you in one game along those lines, it doesn't mean it has to hold true for the next, and I wouldn't take it personally. There's only one person on this site who I wouldn't ACTUALLY want to play with, and that's just because of their personality, not their play.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

If they don't want to play in the same game as you then it is their choice to go CD if you join a game they are in. There shouldn't be an obligation on your part to stay away from them.

But, it might be smart to stay away because there is no need to go into a game with a meta-gaming "enemy" right from the start.

And probably wouldn't be cool to "stalk" them by taking over a CD in every game they are in when the CD inevitably happens.
Ukla (390 D)

I don't know.. I think I'm with rrat on this one. First of all, what someone says in the heat of the battle does not necessarily reflect the truth. Second, if someone says one of those things and really does mean it, then they probably aren't going to last very long in this game, as they are getting pissy about the very nature of the game. So, you probably don't have to worry about seeing them around.

well - at least one of those references is to me ... and I have responded to it quite fully in a previous thread "My New opinion of WTA" (http://www.phpdiplomacy.net/index.php?viewthread=399735#399735)

I had not asked you in-game not to play with me... but I'm officially asking you on the forum to please not join any games I create... its a simple request - and though (as others have pointed out) you have no obligation not to join, I would hope you dont go out of your way to 'stalk' me out of childish spite. just live and let live... (or play and let play as the case may be)

ps. DD is the only person on this site or FB that i've made this request to... and hopefully no one else will have to go onto "you're dead to me" list =P
rratclif (0 DX)

So not to dredge up a conflict, but why did that request get made? I'm curious what someone could do in a game to push someone else that far.
Pandarsenic (1485 D)
16 Apr 09 UTC
Well, Tarablus and I established a mutual "Go fuck yourself" policy about twenty minutes before he got himself banned.
Its never been said to me, and =lve only said it to one person. And yes, it was you Dipper don.
Babak (26982 D(B))
16 Apr 09 UTC
rratclif - if that question was directed at me - go to that other link and its pretty well explained there...

DbJ... hmm... I'm not surprised and I do feel less 'bad' knowing i'm not the only one.
I don't think my distaste of draws was any secret and as DipperDon is one of its chief proponents, its only natural. I've had many pleasant conversations with him in the numerous games we've played, and I don't dislike him as a person, I just try to avoid him in games, which is difficult since he plays like 25 at a time :P
As to Don's questions, and I've told you this directly, you are under no obligation to avoid me or anyone else in games. Its my issue to deal with.
I should clarify... I love stalemates. I just strongly dislike non-stalemated draws. The game feels incomplete. Like a movie that is getting ready for the big chase scene at the end, but instead the good guy and bad guy just shake hands and walk away.

do other players get told the same kind of thing? - It's never been said to me and I've only said it about one person, very early in my career here on phpdip...but I'm over it now.

Do I have any kind of obligation to avoid all games with players who have said they don't want to play with me? - I don't think there's an obligation on your part, no. But I don't see why you'd want to play with someone who wouldn't want to play with you. It might set you up as enemies by default and may alter the balance of the game.

Must I limit my own play to meet their expectations? - You should never have to feel limited by someone else for your own play.
I was pretty close to blacklisting you, DD. But I've decided to take the high road and let bygones be bygones
Darwyn (1601 D)

I'm surprised by all the comments. This thread has put some perspective onto my own dealings with him.

Babek - I too feel less bad now.

But really, we should probably let this thread go before it gets worse.

DipperDon (6457 D)
16 Apr 09 UTC
lol Why would it get worse? If there is something you think I need to hear, then please say it.

Darwyn, I don't remember you being someone who said he didn't want to play with me again. Should there be another incident description added to the list in my first post? Refresh my memory, if you like.
Xapi (194 D)

I've never said or been told anything like that. Must be because I never played with DD.

I have once told someone that I would never work with them again, because they couldn't be trusted (After being attacked by him in more than one game.)

His answer was that maybe I was doing something wrong to encourage him to attack me.
DipperDon (6457 D)

I look forward to playing with you Xapi. Please know that most of the complaints about me are because I'm a good ally.
DD said "

LOL, well, thats certainly one way to look at it, though that wasn't my complaint about you. And with 6 other countries you have a 17% chance of that working for you.
Darwyn (1601 D)
16 Apr 09 UTC
Oh no, Dipper. I'm not one of those people who doesn't want to play you ever again. I'll play you and even ally with you again...I'll just be more guarded, that's all.

I was just surprised to see how many people you've upset. Because of that, I don't feel as bad being upset with you at one point myself.

And I only suggested that this thread go before who knows who else decides to pile on. Honestly, I was only looking out for you. :)
Ivo_ivanov (7545 D)

Sometimes there's a moron - maybe you meet him in more than one games - and you can't stand the guy in the end.

Maybe it's how he plays, how he communicates, or maybe you simply don't like him for no apparent reason - does not matter - the important thing is will this affect your play.

So, while going against him kamikadze style is plain stupid - if I think I'll always go against this guy in 50/50 situations (e.g. with all things equall will I ally with X or Y) - then, yes, I'd tell him to go to hell and that I'prefer it if he kept away - or I'd be kilingl him on sight.

You shouyld not expect people to be playing the way you think is right - but people should also not expect you to have to put up with them. There're plenty of morons around here - and I've heard enough "this is my style" or "I'm experimenting".
DipperDon (6457 D)
16 Apr 09 UTC
Agreed on all, Ivo, except that I can't say that I'd tell someone "I don't want to play with you ever again". Dealing with varied personalities is part of what makes the game interesting and challenging. A good player must figure out how to effectively interact with all kinds of personalities and styles of play.

To me, refusing to play with a certain player or a playing style would feel like an admission that my own negotiating skills were not good enough to deal with him. And intentionally avoiding that player because he may affect my chances of winning would be metagaming and cowardly.
Ivo_ivanov (7545 D)
16 Apr 09 UTC
Just to avoid any misunderstanding - I was not talking about anyone from the thread. It was a general statement - don't want to get involved in the sharing and drame above :)

Actually, when I go through my blacklist I can see none of the 'good' players - mostly people who've disappeared with time.
DipperDon (6457 D)
16 Apr 09 UTC
Thank you for that clarification. ;)
TheClark (831 D)
16 Apr 09 UTC
Search the joinable games and join their games. Dipper - you're are a great player. We had a great alliance and ten we were great enemies all in the same game. All the things you mention - I have done as well
Ivo_ivanov (7545 D)
16 Apr 09 UTC
DD - let me give you a recent example - a player takes over a 1-center CD sitting inbetween me and another country I'm fighting with. He's practically dead - has one army in a neighbouring province and the only question is whether it will be me or the other guy to take his last center. I receive the following message:
"hey i will support you into HIS_LAST_CENTER. i hate bloddy OTHER_PLAYER. hahaha. i am going to die anyway, so might as well screw him over on the way. hahah"

Apparently they had a history from a previous game and the moron only joined with the idea to get some revenge.

Sorry, but I have no problem to tell someone like this that I don't want to have any contact with them again. I've found that one changes depending on the environment they live in (and people they communicate with) - I simply don't want to get dumber.
DipperDon (6457 D)

OMGNSO (415 D)

I wouldn't say something like that to someone. Maybe it is a fear that they can justifiably say it right back.
I've had players go "silent" on me though. That scares me to hell.
