Swearing on the forum
I'm against any blanket ban on swearing but could we perhaps try to avoid it in the first post of a new topic? Bear in mind that anyone coming to this site for the first time will see the forum page and I'm not sure it sends out the right message.

Question
Ok I've seen a few game variants like the "Winner Take All" and league matches. Are all these special request games that need to go through Kestas? I don't see any options for variants, including less then 7 players.

Kestas - please ban these morons - part two
mapleleafrulz has taken over a cd in one of my games and has posted a global message in a pathetic attempt to paint me as a multi. This is totally malicious; well beyond the childish moniker previously used by this individual.
As this idiot, and mapleleafisiacnt, are likely the same idiot and logging on from a country other than Canada, just ban him/her and every other user from the IP.
The really sad thing about all of this is that people with whom I have played in many games are actually questioning my integrity.
As far as my original thread goes, the inmates have taken over the asylum.
They are proud of it.
Pathetic.
How about a response?

Grudgematch Variant
What we need is a game variant to solve the question that has been gnawing at us:
Who is better, Sicarius or Mapleleaf?

Only 2 rules:
1. Sicarius and Mapleleaf are at war no-matter-what
2. All other players must play in an un-biased manner

Hopefully they will both accept the challenge

No orders to submit in this phase, but...
The game "Diplo2009" just advanced, and now it is the retreat phase of Autumn 1906. None of my units were displaced, but the game tab still shows up at the top of my screen with a red X next to it, and the game page itself shows a red X next to my name. Where orders would be submitted, it says, "You have no orders to submit in this phase."

Does this mean the game will wait 24 hours before it advances again just because I can't submit (and finalize) any orders that would change this red X to a green check mark?

misspelled territory name
Maybe I'm just a nit-picker here, but "Skagerrak" doesn't have a c in its spelling. Please adjust.

I only really care because the place is the source of Standard Mean Ocean Water, which is used for stable isotope ratios (hydrogen and oxygen) as well as the standard concentration ratios of solutes throughout most of the world ocean... so of all places, it deserves its proper spelling!

I'm not sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if both spellings were in fact considered correct. It's not an English word by nature, and in translating to the characters we use, there will probably be possible variations. Just a thought.

Half the things on the diplomacy board are spelled or named improperly.

Check this out:
http://www.diplom.org/Online/maps/map_c.gif

If I'm not mistaken, that's from an official game board.

I checked on my board and it is indeed spelled "Skagerrak."

For 5000 Euros you'd think the names could at least be correct :)
aum (602 D)
13 Jun 08 UTC
Not to mention that half of the place names on the board reflect the antiquated orthography of the depicted time period and the time when the game itself came out.
menace3society (927 D)
13 Jun 08 UTC
Actually, the orthography was wrong when the game came out, too. It was even wrong when the game is supposed to take place. The Netherlands were only known collectively as "The Kingdom of Holland" from during the Napoleonic period, and Constantinople was almost never called by that name by its inhabitants: they preferred the far shorter designation "the City." The prevalence of the wrong names for these places into the twentieth century in English is a testament to the profound cultural, geographic, and historical illiteracy of the British ruling classes (whence also "Burma", "Ceylon" etc).

pedantic- really.
Why bother?
play the game or if all you can do is criticise this site, then f*ck off.
Or why dont you contribute money to the site or Kestas, so that things like this can be addressed.
He does it all for free and you whinge about an extra letter in Skagerrak?
Grow up

same as sean.

I think cteno pointed this out out of his knowledge and would like to share this with us. I am sure not even a fraction of us recognized this error, right?

I think credits should be given to cteno...you made us learnt one more thing. I took the name, whether in board games or here without really questioning the spelling or such. An interesting body of water.
canute (0 DX)
13 Jun 08 UTC
Yes it was recognised, the same way that corsica, cyprus and iceland remain neutral etc, and how the clours differ, ummm... and any other nit picking issue that really has ZERO bearing on the game.
If you have code to fix this, then pls share... otherwise- get on with the game.
I believe that's what this site is for???

RE Sean and Chariman communist- no i do not have anger issues, especially since i am not angry:)

However, unlike the 2 of you, i appreciate what this free and fantastic site has to offer, i dont need to pick at its MINOR flaws.

I'll fix this bug, I think there was another mistake with Helgaland Bight or something. Problem is an ENUM datatype is used to store territory names in many places so fixing it will require a lot of tables get rebuilt, an easy fix but it'll need some downtime
Does this mean that all the Russian, Bulgarian and Serb SCs need to be written in Cyrillic, Greece in Greek, Syria and NAf in Arabic and Armenian in their own alphabet to?

Surely this way lies madness!

How are point accumulated?
I am raising a true question, no accusation, no polemics.
I am playing a game where one player (Qing Shi Hwang) has jumped from 100 points to 1341 points overnight (currently he has invested all his pot in a joinable game).
The interesting issue comes if you take a look at his profile: only three survivals, the biggest of which is with 1 SC in 352 pot game, the other two survivals being in games with pots less or equal to 70 points.
Where do the 1341 points come from?

I suspect a multi-acct or metagame.
In my game, run to the hills.

Player 1: Qin Shi Huang who came in and played Turkey who was in CD (left with 1 SC in Munich)
Player 2: venek who played Russia

Reason my suspicion were raised
1. QSH came in to play turkey (left with 1 SC not in home territory)
2. Came in entered orders, 6 min later, venek entered his orders
3. Russia had 1 unit in Berlin, Turkey had 1 unit in Munich. Somehow Berlin managed to move into Munich
4. Looking at QSH record, he has played 79 games of which he has survived 3 and won none. He however has 210 points. This suggests he takes part solely in CD games for the benefit of a group of people to use as a dummy account.

Venek or QSH, could you kindly answer the allegations?

Kestasjk, could you please look into this? I understand you're not in development anymore, are we working on the code to build moderators?

Here is the link: http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=3953

It was meant to be a draw between Italy & Turkey, but Turkey (me) won when Norway wasn't dislodged even though it was attacked 2-1 and was trying to move out.

So a bit more notice this time... If anyone is around Sunday for a quick turnover game, I would be keen to set one up from around 10:30 - 11:00 BST(British Summer Time). If you are interested then please post a message and then we can all re-confirm we are logged on on Sunday morning and go for it.

I learnt a good Russian word yesterday... Maskirovka
"...a sequence of moves contrived to convince an opponent that certain of his vital pieces are at risk. He reacts by preparing for an offensive which never materialises; instead, his adversary strikes elsewhere, as [the adversary] had first intended." (Lawrence James, Raj)

Sound familiar? The great thing is that I can now say it all in one word.

Wikipedia Article 'Internet Diplomacy'
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Diplomacy

I thought it would be a good idea to move this into a separate thread. We should start paying more attention to the wikipedia article to make sure that it reflects us correctly.

The current article about phpdiplomacy on Wikipedia is not too bad, however it could be better and more comprehensive to make sure that the developers here are sufficiently credited for their work, especially considering attempts to portray things incorrectly by others (cough.. playdiplomacy)

I have a few points:

a) Is there anyone with a senior position as a contributor in Wikipedia and/or experience with writing articles there among us?

b) We should stress the point that phpdiplomacy is based on work of volunteer coders from the community and completely free

c) We should list all of the current forks of phpdiplomacy, not just the Facebook version.

d) We should see if we can say more about the unique community here as well as the features.

e) Perhaps more details as to the reason Kestas stopped coding for? Objectively, of course.
