You know that Thanksgiving was propaganda invented by Lincoln as a reason that America belonged to the north, and not to the seceding south. Most of the founding fathers were from Virginia, and so he said "look, we have thanksgiving."

I love some good old American propaganda.

it wasn't propaganda he wanted a symbol of unity between people. it's not like he was proving he was better because he has an extra holiday.

Whenever I hear people reminding everybody that the origin of Thanksgiving is bloody and exploitative, I can't help but wonder: is it suddenly not possible for good things to arise out of bad? Not possible to participate in and, indeed, be thankful for that good, even as we're aware of its bad origins and strive to improve?

Nothing good has pure origins. Not that we should blithely dismiss those origins; but why the shaming of people for trying to make something good out of something bad?

Talking about the associated mythos with Native Americans, not the literal beginning of the holiday itself. Seems like every year we get reminded that we're supposed to be ashamed that cruel people in pursuit of wealth and power a couple hundred years ago did bad things, and that we get shamed if we try to make something good out of a holiday that calls back to it. enough I say!

The nice thing about the "First Thanksgiving" is that the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag actually did have a real alliance and peace, and it wasn't until later generations that that was ruined.

Silly to think people still don't do horrible things in the pursuit of wealth and power, many of which continue to disenfranchise indigenous populations. But you keep on living in your bubble there
