The Scottish Play: Independence for the Scots?
http://news.yahoo.com/supporters-scottish-independence-narrow-poll-lead-first-time-005404318.html
I'm nowhere near well enough informed to comment on whether or not that's a good idea, culturally, financially, or otherwise, so I defer to the British WebDippers--what do you think about this, yea or nay, and are you worried they'll take 12th Doctor with them if they do? Is there interest in a REAL tournament on this site?
Looking at having a real cash buy-in. First, second and third places receive a cash prize, proceeds go to the site. Additional prizes for best country, and a few other notables (best stab, etc.). Maybe getting the site to put an emblem on your profile page (after all, we're paying money) for awards earned.

Most supply centers in a single turn?
So recently, I was in a game where I was able to convince someone to give me his 3 home centers, another center, and support me to 3 centers occupied by other nations in a single turn, all so that he would survive the game. I went from 11 centers to 18 all in one turn. Do I was curious, what's the most supply centers everyone has captured in a turn. It would be difficult to do more than 9 I think, but I guess not impossible?

5 min "live" game questions
I'm pretty new to the site and intrigued by the "live" 5 min cycle games. Are they literally 5 minute rounds or is there a lot of pausing? Do people communicate over the messaging system during them? In general, how long of a block of time do you need to set aside to play in them? Thanks in advance, any advice is appreciated.

What has The Internet done to Education?
I don’t have kids, and I was just about out of college when the Internet struck (collecting my first paychecks elsewhere as Netscape went public in 1995), so I have never had any experience with what The Internet has done to education. Do students bother learning facts anymore? Is Google everyone’s external brain? Does anyone know anything? Is everyone a plagiarist? What gives?

Duel of the Fogeys
I'm looking for a new game, and after my last exasperating experience playing with the general population (a full-press game where nobody talked, I got teamed up on by my neighbors but still survived to the SIX-way draw) I'm looking for some new players. I think it would be fun to try and play with some people that fall into the age group of 30+. Aside from full-press with 2- or 3-day phases, I'd be open to any other combination of settings. Any takers?
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))

My top 200 GR game doesn't look like it's going to take off and I meet your 30+ category (although I will refrain from calling myself a 'fogey'). I tend to prefer 2-day phases, non anon, but i'm up for nearly anything as long as it's the classical map.
murraysheroes (526 D(B))

Classic map for sure...probably should have included that in the original post. 2-day phases are fine with me, as is non-anon.

I've got a toddler at home, so I've found that I need a phase that can stretch the duration of a weekend in order for me to be able to keep up. If you're up for 2-day, then we've got:

I just turned 50 and my current game won't go much longer (gameID=145332). This would be my second game, so I'm relatively new, but I have done well in my first game. I like the longer turn-around. Can I join?
Al Swearengen (0 DX)
08 Sep 14 UTC
I'm interested.

I have one issue that I'd like to talk out, and I feel that this thread is probably the place.

My problem with the longer phase games is that the guys that typically play them play twelve of them at once, and then they just end up treating each game essentially as gunboat. While press will be exchanged, I end up getting a lot of boiler plate language from the other players as they tend not to identify individually with their roles in the dozen or so games that they're playing.

I'm starting to get the sense that this game would be different? If so, I'd like to play. I'd not only want assurances about the above, but also would want to set an 85-point minimum buy-in (if jimbursch) is admitted or more (if he's not).
murraysheroes (526 D(B))
08 Sep 14 UTC
I don't rightly care what the buy-in is, so I'm fine with setting it as high or as low as you like. I have no problems having a player new to the site join the game as long as the others don't either--older players tend to be less flaky than younger ones. They take things less personally and are less likely to abandon a game where things look grim--at least in my experience.

@Al_Swearengen, that's not something I've actually encountered much of. I've definitely seen it once or twice (like in the OP of this thread), but I've been fairly lucky with people who play longer phases because they're like me--they don't want a phase to go by without plenty of time for negotiations. If you're looking for slower games with good press, I'd suggest you scroll through some of my past games and check out the players in my private games. Those guys are all really good about detailed press and meaningful negotiations.
ag7433 (927 D(S))
08 Sep 14 UTC
You can count me in as long as we get agreement to Ready up on the basic phases and not draw longer than needed for things like basic retreats or disbands.

I'm 30+ and don't think I have much experience with most of the guys on the list.

Ssorenn, you can veto me joining if you want since it's been 2 recent games we've been/are in. No hard feelings.

murraysheroes (526 D(B))
08 Sep 14 UTC
So unless anyone has objections, we're at 2-day phases, 85 point buy-in, non-anon Classic. I agree with not milking all simple phases for the full length. With that being said I have taken a full phase length on builds/retreats on occasion, but always for a reason. I’ve either been negotiating the build, for example, or I know that I’ll be busy over the weekend and need the additional time. Using my active game as an example, I milked the build phase for all of Sunday knowing that I wouldn’t be around, but readied up first thing this morning. If those situations are fine by you, I think we can agree to readying whenever possible.

I'd be in if I wasn't already playing two games. I'm closing rapidly on 40, enjoy leisurely 2 day phases, and have the points to spend. I'm also encumbered by a toddler, so two day phases would be minimum for me.

If one of my games ends soon I could join.

@AG, would love for you to play as your quality of game adds to the list of already great players----i do agree that readying up especially for retreats and builds is a must to be part of the game
