On the subject of distance running...
I'm running a 10k later this spring. My best recent 5 mile time is 35:08, and my best 6 mile time is sub-42 minutes. What is a good time to make my goal, and are these good times for an amateur? I don't want to embarrass myself.

How do you view the role of government?
This is a survey, not (yet) a debate thread. bo's thread about Arizona and the responses therein got me thinking about the question, and I don't think we've explicitly discussed it here in a while. I want to start out just getting answers to the question and then we can argue about them all we want (as is webDip tradition).

Well today was interesting
Normally I find the news on main websites pretty stupid (what celebrities hooked up today, etc), but I was pretty intrigued by the battery-less flashlight, the knife attack in China, and Russia trying to start a war.

Are countries 100% randomly assorted?
Is the distribution of which empire one starts of with entirely random or is it influenced in any way? I've checked my game history and I've been assorted Austria on 8 of 15 occasions and am getting slightly bored of it.

If you are running around (or your SO is running around) condoms are better at protecting you from nasty diseases than nothing at all.
Jamiet99uk (1307 D)
26 Feb 14 UTC
I would always assume that I should wear a condom unless the woman says she would rather I didn't. In that case it would depend on whether she was on the pill and how otherwise sexually active she was.

It is of course much, much nicer without one. But unwanted pregnancy / STDs can fuck life up quite a bit, so hey.
Putin33 (111 D)
26 Feb 14 UTC
"Just curious Putin, how on earth have you come to that conclusion?"

Polling data + the fact that my wife does women's health stuff and while doing demos at a clinic reported back how widespread ignorance of condom use was. Mistakes abound.

I hope there are no dicks in that link? :)
Also, some of you only seem to care about the possibility of conception and not nasty diseases... Did I get that right? If so, why? It seems to me that only one of those can really be a blessing in disguise :)

Hey, I mentioned the disease thing as did Jamie.

Of course, I haven't worn a condom in 25 years. Then again I haven't had sex in the last 3 and I have been married to the same wonderful woman for that full 25 and never been unfaithful to her.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
26 Feb 14 UTC
Never mind what I said about not mentioning diseases. My mind said something like '~5 posts and only 2 mentioned diseases!' but I forgot there's often more troll posts than other posts for a sec :)

That link surprised me too. I mean, some things make some sense to not know, but I'd read the manual in the face of danger of nasty diseases, you know :)

And then I wonder why one bothers at all when he uses it after the start of intercourse and before the end...
Octavious (2802 D)

It was an interesting link, although between 0 and 100% of readers found its statistics confusing.

For whatever reason they reported the range of values instead of the averages, as 50 studies were involved.

steephie22 (182 D(S))
26 Feb 14 UTC
Yeah, I must say it annoyed me to read between 0,8 and 40,7% for example, because, well, that's quite a big difference... Couldn’t they give an average? It's not like we sue them if they're slightly off...
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))

You should always use condoms if you are able. Speaking as somebody who can't, I've had to be very, very, careful. STD tests between every partner, and I demand they do the same. You are young, right? Don't trust her when she says she's on birth control. Ask to see it. Become involved in it. Take responsibility for it yourself. Pregnancy scares are not fun (from personal experience when I was much younger: that lying, lying, whore). They seriously need to invent a male birth control. How hard can it be?

Oral sex is still risky, but is a moderately safer alternative. Still not recommended without testing.
Draugnar (0 DX)

"They seriously need to invent a male birth control. How hard can it be?"

It's called a vasectomy and some the new procedures for it can be reversed if you so desire later in life.
Draugnar (0 DX)

"Oral sex is still risky, but is a moderately safer alternative. Still not recommended without testing."

If she has any visible sores on mouth or genitals, you don't want to touch her without a condom or with your mouth. And I would seriously think twice about touching her even *with* a condom.

On a different note, if a girl is lying about anti-conception and she gets pregnant of you because she lied, is that your problem somehow? Surely she can get a morning-after pill if she wants and otherwise it's her problem?
If your partner lied to you to get pregnant, then you can bet your ass that partner will be looking for child support if she keeps the pregnancy. (And I can't see any good reason why anyone would lie about birth control use if not to get pregnant....)
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
26 Feb 14 UTC
Hey Draug, a vasectomy is a pretty drastic step. Reversible, yes, but it's a pretty drastic step, and to my understanding only medically recommended if you don't intend to reverse it.

On a side note, I do laugh to myself whenever I go to the gas station because the "magnum" section is always sold out. Apparently everybody thinks they need them :P

@steephie pretty much what president eden says.

They do it for various reasons, all of them utterly stupid, and if she did it on purpose (this one did, in my case) none of these reasons will result in her getting an abortion. She's having this baby regardless of what you think.

Now don't you all worry, it turned out to be a false alarm, so there are no baby YJ's running around. But I assure you the headache and worry was a nightmare.

"If your partner lied to you to get pregnant, then you can bet your ass that partner will be looking for child support if she keeps the pregnancy. (And I can't see any good reason why anyone would lie about birth control use if not to get pregnant....)"

... That bitch! Didn't think of that.

FYI, another reason to lie about birth control that I had in mind could be because you're really horny, and you can 'clean up' afterwards too.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
26 Feb 14 UTC
Another more paradoxal reason to lie could be a religious one I suppose.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))

steephie it happens. A lot more than you think. At least in America.

Yes, it can happen that they lie just because they are horny. That is quite possible, she is thinking short term. Men do that too. Its your job to think long term, because you can make all the excuses in the world after the fact about how you didn't know better, but that baby/disease is gonna be there to stay.

This is me telling you now: there are no excuses, and you can't claim ignorance after reading this. It's your complete responsibility to take charge of your body and who you share it with, and don't take anybody's word on anything when your future is at stake.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
26 Feb 14 UTC
Don't worry, I got that part, but I couldn’t think of a way to profit from the man by getting pregnant on purpose...
I'm not even sure if child support works that way here too. Wouldn't it be more fair if the man can decide to 'not keep' the child the first week or so, at which point the mother can choose between getting rid of it or going ahead without child support?

It doesn't necessarily prevent disease much but gay sex is really great for birth control, or so I'm told.
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
26 Feb 14 UTC
@steephie: the day you figure out how a woman "profits" from that behavior is the day you understand women. I still don't get it. It's deep and psychological and biological, whatever it is. I don't want to make it sound like all women are like that. A classy woman with her own future won't pull shit like that.

re child support: I'm trying to think of a reason why that's a terrible idea, but actually am drawing a blank. I'm sure one of my libtard friends can answer that question.

Condoms are great unless you have a latex allergy then they're pure hell.

@YJ sorry that happened. That's a really shitty move by a girl and really the reason all guys should use a condom unless they're very sure of the girl being on the pill.

Avoid the fertility window and you should be able to avoid pregnancy scares, unless you have mutant sperm that can survive in a woman's body for over 5 days.

@Putin - Easy. Diabetes and thyroid for me combined with spinal stenosis and extreme arthritis in the hips make sex a waste for us - painful for her and requiring pharmaceutical help for me. We cuddle. We hug. We kiss. But we don't have sex.

She has the spinal stenosis and arthritis, I should point out. Plus, she never fully recovered down there from her radical hysterectomy at 45 due to early onset cervical cancer. They caught it in time, but still not fun.
