1 In 4 Americans Thinks The Sun Goes Around The Earth, Survey Says
http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2014/02/14/277058739/1-in-4-americans-think-the-sun-goes-around-the-earth-survey-says

I thought it would be funny to ask a quarter of my friends to answer the question incorrectly for kicks and giggles, but it turns out a bunch of other people had the same idea...

Draug, this is just like all of the math threads where you're finally proven wrong beyond all shadow of doubt and you try to get out of it by claiming that you're trolling. You need to learn to admit that you're wrong.

Yes, taos it is. There is for instance a phenomenon called gravitational lensing that clearly demonstrates the effects of gravity on light. You can read the Wikipedia page about it if you want to learn more (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravitational_lensing).
Never has there ever been a more appropriate use of this. "Trolling"... right, Draugnar.

Here is a mind blower... The nucleus revolves around the electrons in an atom!

And despite the limitation of C, somehow the entire fucking universe revved around the earth as the earth is motionless. Right?

"Here is a mind blower... The nucleus revolves around the electrons in an atom!"

Draugnar, the so called Bohr-model of the atom wherein electrons revolve around a nucleus is incorrect. Electrons are quantum particles. Their state is described by a quantum wave function and their behavior is not at all like classical particles. For instance, they don't have an exact location, let alone an exact trajectory. They instead have a probability distribution for their location. Considering it an electron "cloud" (even if it's just one electron) is a far better analogy than electrons revolving along a trajectory. The same holds for the protons and neutrons that make up the nucleus.

"somehow the entire fucking universe revved around the earth as the earth is motionless. Right?"

No, not right. I can't be bothered to explain the concept of relative motion to you again though. You clearly lack the intellect required to grasp the concept.
Draugnar (0 DX)
17 Feb 14 UTC
I'm going off the classic view from prior to Galileo of the earth being the center of the universe. As far as the electron cloud, then the nucleus orbits the cloud in a sort of random movement that we try to predict. I still would like to understand how the larger object orbits the smaller object. That would be like saying the objects attract the black hole to them and they don't move toward it. Again, saying something orbits something else is a simplification for describing the relationship but is more accurate when the smaller mass "orbits" the larger mass rather than vice versa. The truly accurate statement would be that both objects are in a directional motion and gravitational attraction alters their respective trajectories such that they maintain a fluctuation but stable distance between them as they revolve around each other. In a sort of spiral dance. Add in other celestial bodies (like the moon, asteroids, other planets, and their satellites) and the equations cam be really complex. Do you not agree that saying the earth orbits the sun inside of the spiral I. A complex dance together is easier for school kids?

But here is a sad one. How many people think if the earth stopped spinning, we would just float off it? More than you might realize...
Hellenic Riot (1626 D(G))

Float off it? no. Die instantly when we find ourselves moving at 800+mph to the side due to our momentum? Probably ;)

A real question I've always wondered about approaching(or exceeding, assuming it was somehow possible) the speed of light: would it make you turn invisible? Like a light-equivalent of a sonic boom?
Draugnar (0 DX)
17 Feb 14 UTC
Even if it slowed down at a reasonable pace to not cause inertia to topple buildings and cause oceans to slosh over California, Spain, England, parts of Australia, cover most islands smaller than Hawaii completely, or crumble dams and shift large lakes like the Great Lakes or the Bodensee, we'd just experience a slight increase in gravity. But weather patterns would get all fucked up with no spinning solid mass below the gaseous atmosphere.

Oh, and one can only imagine what having a 8949 hour day (2200 hours baking, 2200 cooling down, 2200 freezing, and 2200 warming back up to baking).
wait a minute... 2200+2200+2200+2200 =/= 8949
what will I be doing for the rest of the 149 hours?
also I though there were 8766 hours in a year so if the earth had no rotation surely one day would be equal to that and not 8949... but what would I know, obviously Drag is just trolling me
Draugnar (0 DX)
17 Feb 14 UTC
I was sitting on the john and miscomputed 365.25 * 24 in my head. As far as the 2200, that was just a cut into quarters during a particularly rough section of that dump I just took.

Amnd not so much a troll, as a flight into fancy looking at what all the damage would be if the earth decided to "spin slowly down to die" to borrow a lyric from David Gates and Bread's "If".
my apologise... but you should probably find a better time to be posting on webdip than the bog
*apologies god damn auto correct

I played gunboat game: gameID=135825 about a half hour ago and it crashed. Couldn't reach the site and now i'm wondering whether this was my problem or if the site was indeed unavailable for others too?

Defence VS Offence
What do you think the strengths and weaknesses of defence VS offence are in war? I personally think that a good offence is 100 times better then a good solid defence. Having a good Defence on the other hand can destroy large numbers of enemies who may attack..... The unfortunate thing about it is most armies now days are mobile enough that they can maneuver around defences.

Draug tries to get addicted again...
OK, so I actually did enjoy myself in that last game, despite the ending and the current vitriol coming from Roka, so I'd like to try again. This will have to be limited to just 20 D for now, but I want another group of top notch gunboat players (Roka need *not* apply) to try and teach me a lesson again. I made it to the top three last time. Think you can kill me earlier?
