Something New: School of War Study Group
We had so much player interest in the Winter SoW game that it was suggested we do a Study Group game for those not in the main game. Details inside.

Consequentialism versus Deontology
In the game of Diplomacy, the emphasis is - in my opinion - on one's mastery of Realpolitik. To borrow from Wikipedia, it is "politics or diplomacy based primarily on power and on practical and material factors and considerations, rather than explicit ideological notions or moral or ethical premises." In other words, making the best of the situation.

TIME Personality Quiz can determine your politics?

I took it and it was fairly accurate. TIME is reporting a correlation of r=0.604 after 17,000 responses.

2014 GR Challenge
It's a new year and I'm sure some of you are looking for games. Similarly to what was done regularly in the past and what abg(or someone) organized in December, let's have some GR challenge games. Post here with your WTA FP rank, and anon and turn length preference if you're interested.

Somebody contacts you in a gunboat game ... what do you do?
Let's say you are playing in a gunboat game, and somebody sends you a message by email, Skype, or some other out-of-game communication method. The message refers to the gunboat game, and says something like "support me to Timbuktu", or "DMZ Timbuktu?".

The only thorough and complete way to rectify the damage done, is to cauterise the part of my brain which remembers the content of the message. Ouch!

Ex-Israeli PM and Strongman Ariel Sharon, 85, Has Died
http://news.yahoo.com/former-israeli-prime-minister-sharon-dies-85-125933133.html Love him or hate him, after David Ben Gurion himself, Sharon's probably done more to define Israel as a PM than anyone else...I know I'd still rather him than that nut Netanyahu...Sharon could be ruthless, but he knew the peace process was necessary, whereas Netanyahu's West Bank dealings are short-sighted and endanger the long-term welfare of Israelis and Palestinians.

So Teddy Roosevelt, Ernest Hemingway, and Jeremy Bentham Go Rhino Hunting...
http://news.yahoo.com/black-rhino-hunting-permit-auctioned-350-000-033224692.html While it's admittedly morbid to auction off the right to hunt a living creature...if the rhino really is "male, old, and nonbreeding" and the $350K really does go to benefiting the rest of the black rhino population, and this particular rhino's already proving something of a problem because of his aggressiveness...is humane sentiment more important than practical aid in the way of the $350K?

I've looked through the games I've played in were SD won. There were two, of which one of them was entirely the result of a CD.
I'm pretty sure PE definitely abuses CDs a lot in live games.
Can we see that one as well mendax?

Yes, Split and I have anal sex with each other on the reg, that is the only explanation.
y2kjbk (4846 D(G))

gameID=116072
gameID=130186

The first had an initial Russian NMR while Split was France, and Russia showed up for A01. No early CD's by my count in the second. I don't see any hint of any foul play in either win.
y2kjbk (4846 D(G))
13 Jan 14 UTC
Save for the obvious Austria/Russia multi that only hurt Split, not helped.
mendax (321 D)
13 Jan 14 UTC
gameID=116072

The CDs weren't that early (and to my eternal shame, one of them was mine), but they most certainly made the game incredibly unbalanced, and the honourable thing to do after that would have been to draw.
mendax (321 D)
13 Jan 14 UTC
Like I said, only one of them had CDs in them.
y2kjbk (4846 D(G))
13 Jan 14 UTC
At what not-early point should Split have been a gentleman and put his draw vote up, and at what point would it have been acceptable to take it down? If he had his draw/cancel up at all and took it down when he rocked the unbalancing around him, that's not valid enough to hate on IMO.
You see now what mendax consider a ruined game when I win.
And what mendax consider a regular Italy win when Austria nmr's in spring '01.
That's what I'm telling you about - a bunch of jelous sore losers led by PE.
Lopt (102 D)
13 Jan 14 UTC
Don't you ever get tired SP? We all know you are a douche who goes over CD's to get what he wants... no use in defending yourself in front of the public court.
That's what I said Lopt - "we" meaning a bunch of scumbags who are the disgrace of webdip.
I don't actually see a problem with gameID=116072 ... sure the German CD helped SD, but what won the game for him was Russia/Italy infighting. This looks really similar to the game I cited with SD earlier upthread. I don't fault him for taking that solo -- the game was more in doubt than ours, but it's a similar scenario.

Nor with gameID=130186 ... I don't even see a CD.

There are definitely examples of him doing this but these aren't it
you guys are making me defend SD y u do diz
y2kjbk (4846 D(G))
13 Jan 14 UTC
That's Mendax's fault
"there are definitly examples..." - only in your sick mind. It could be a few out of 900 games but not about 30% of all games like in your case.
mendax (321 D)
13 Jan 14 UTC
I said that only one of my games with SD was damaged by CDs, so I really don't know why you're all looking at the other one as if it has any relevance to anything.

you're a disgusting person and deserve every bit of vitriol thrown at you
You can count mine by the number of threads after those games. Divided three or for times.
I don't need to be defended of the sick assholes like you. Especialy from a liar like you.

you made the concrete claim that i've abused CDs to win 30% of my games.

i haven't even won 30% of my games

So what we have here is a liar, lying about a liar, to some liars.
Can't you read a hypothesis (or rhetorics, don't know the word, hyperbolis?) i just copy pasted your claim from the page 1. When a liar repeats a lie several times it becomes the truth! Capish?
